- Removing Macbook batteries can be a significant undertaking, in terms of mess (alcohol, cards, adhesive), risk (punctures, cutting), and time.
I've found this Wax-string method to be particularly quick and safe, best of all it does leave the packs in a fairly good state afterwards.
Wax string can be purchased off eBay, usually sold for stitching leather goods.
Make sure you use a new length of string for each cell, and get a better handle tool than the toothbrush I used!
I've just bought a waxed thread from eBay. I can't wait to try it. thank you Paul for this technique.
Well done Paul, "String Theory" works! I have several dead Mac laptops with good batteries adhered to the upper case. I have been tying to figure out a way to remove a good battery without damaging it. Today, using your waxed string method I removed a battery from a damaged 2017 MacBook Pro A1708 and reinstalled it into another otherwise healthy 2017 MBP in need of battery replacement. There was no damage to the battery during removal and it charged right up and tested good. I just saved myself $50 with a piece of string! I improved on your method by tying the string to a couple handles I created from a dowel. At first I tried nylon string that broke, so I went straight to waxed string, which performed well. I may experiment with a strong monofilament fishing line to see how that works compared to waxed string, however, the waxed string works so well, I will likely stick with it. Also, the wax provides some lubrication, making removal easier and less likely to damage the battery.
Thanks for showing this trick! I had no waxed thread but I tried my Oral-B Glide cool mint floss . Broke but then my lady helped me braid three floss pieces together , to go along with the two toothbrushes required, clove hitched and easy peasy!
A medium gauge nylon fishing line and some drops of wd40 worked great last time I did this. Nice alternative this if one has no fishing line.
Nice work, Paul. I'm going to try that method on a [pristine] a1398 mid-2015 that I've just gotten my mits on. Cheers!
Good luck with it - definitely make sure that the string goes under the cell and I think it should be good from there. Curious to see how it goes on packs like the A1398 / A1502.
@@pldaniels It went flawlessy, thanks for a most informative vid. By the by, I used white waxed thread and found it easy to see exactly where the thread was cutting. Don't know of an easier and quicker method than this. Cheers!
Paul, it's easier to do this job when heating the other side of the bottom case (palm rest) with a hair dryer. Not to much heat but enough to melt a bit the adhesive.
I sometimes wonder, given that I live in somewhat elevated temperatures, perhaps that's why I rarely find the need to preheat a lot of things?
Greetings from Melbourne.
Good old rural know how. Very simple and clean. No mess or fumes.
Eye wear might be a good idea though (just in case) of combustion.
As always hope we learned something. Lol
If a battery ruptured, it isn't exactly an explosion. It takes a little time for the reaction to get going. And I'm sure Paul has seen 1 or 2 LiPo incidents with his RC background, so he knows what to do. (He mentioned throwing it out the window... :)
I use something similar but I use polyester/nylon which is much stronger. I also use the tuck it under the cell. Recently I have started to soak the wire in some alcohol and have used the same string for 5 laptops now and still has not broken. I use those cruddy screwdrivers as pull levers, the most important thing is to keep a pad under the laptop so it does not slide every which way.
Go pyrotechnic ? Hang on I’ll get popcorn 💥 no but seriously thanks Paul, loving the dental floss and toothbrush method
Good old trusty toothbrush comes in handy 👍
Slick trick Paul! 👍👍👍
I use a 3d printer spatula like the BuildTak Spatula for years now. fast, simple and easy
lol i do this with guitar strings nice one Paul Daniels
Same method, except with a fishing line, tends to be used when removing the glass from the phone's display itself. Works great every time. Also use alcohol, for more lubricated experience.
har har har
Very Brilliant Bro. And i watched the missing stream :)
Hello Paul, Greetings from Sheffield UK and thank you for all these fantastic videos you do. I am interested in purchasing FlexBV, but I just wanted to ask can I use it on an iMac and a laptop or is it 1 licence per device? Many thanks - Richard
One licence per user / concurrent use. So, yes, you can have it on two machines so long as there's only one installation in use concurrently.
Nice, will have to remember that one
Yep, looks easy. I'm still using cards method after injecting tiny amounts of Acetone but it takes much longer. Have you tried using stronger magnet wire, sat 0.4mm thickness or larger?
Avoiding using metal, but the cotton has a natural soft abrading attribute without heightened risk of damage to the pack membranes.
What if the battery was filled with gas tho?
Molybdenum Wire is the stuff Paul, strong cheap n used to remove digitizer from lcds world wide...
I'll try moly on some future test ones. What I liked about the string was that it has less risk of knifing its way through items.
amazing content
I feel like "no fuss" is subjective but this is certainly 10x better than throwing IPA all over the place
these days I've moved to using the yellow scraping plastic spudgers for 99% of the work; using the line is useful though for some jobs where you need to get a starting gap
Still prefer the plastic fish slice from Joseph Joseph to be the quickest no fuss option :)
I imagine this is slightly cheaper than a "certified" repair? I mean, 30min + a piece of strong? :) A couple months ago an Apple certified shop quoted me $295 for a replacement top case, plus $180 in labor...so just $475 (US) for a new battery on an A1398! Yeah, I did it myself. That string looks a lot easier than what I did.
That works really great :-D
Looks like twine to me, i havn't seen twine in donkeys years, very strong and often green for some reason.
Or if you like danger, try a metal guitar string or cheese cutter wire lol.
Hah, I'll avoid the metal wires for now; at least with cotton the abrasive nature is going to still be less than most plastics. This twine was green because I opted for that colour, however I know what you mean, I can recall years ago seeing balls of "natural" twine that had that distinct grassy colour.
I would put little IPA alcohol on the string. It helps. :)
What I liked about it being 'wax only' is the lack of sludge left behind, something that I found rather annoying to clean up when IPA gets applied to the adhesive.
@@pldaniels I cant see on the video, about the thickness of the string, but sometimes i use thin silk string, or fishing string. Very strong and thin. Great video as usual. Regards Yanko
And that's magic! =)
Spiderwire fishing line works well for this.
A fishing net twine needle may help with that, as you can thread the twine into it and wrap it around it as you use it. If you want I will link you to what I mean.
I know the sort you mean. I used to have them as a youngster for repairing my fishing nets.
good old windscreen removal technic with bonded windscreens lol
I also remove the battery!
Electric Guitar string
EA or D 🎸
And here i am stabbing batteries with a spatula
Im definitely trying this out!
Works on CPUs as well ;)
Paul you're not authorized to be doing this repair! You'll splode your face off! Only AASP can perform this DEFCON 5 job.
Actually, an AASP cannot do this job. Not allowed. They would get sued or otherwise punished if Apple found out. (I sort of get that Apple's repair program is designed for fastest possible turn around with absolute minimum risk...we all want it fixed right now with zero chance of needing a follow-up repair...but the cost is out of control!)
@@fredygump5578 I'll admit, I accepted the risk of a reply like yours as i typed the letters "AASP". But, i thought, maybe, just maybe, someone would see past poor attempt at a tongue-in-cheek comment and get a cheap laugh.
It's cool though, it's hard to get sarcasm and tone through.. text. Cheers
Well ok, a bit of fuss ... ;)
Cheese wire could cut with less friction
