    I went in to a McDonald’s over twenty years ago. Their idiot machines weren’t working so they said cash only and had to figure the bill and change I would get. I did it in my head in a couple seconds and told the girl what it should be. She just looked at me and kept doing her chicken scratching on the piece of paper. Then the called the manager over and both put their heads together. My food was getting cold and after over 10 minutes they came up with the same figure I did. The girl looked at me and said how did you know so quickly. I said simple math I had in school, now how about you take the cold food back and get me some that’s hot. Yeah people just can’t do the basics, reading, writing and arithmetic is what I learned. Now days it’s a guess.

    They were confusing "pressure" with "force", two different units. 10000 psi (pressure) applied to a certain area produces lots of force
    A fun one to calculate is the different force that a cylinder produces when it extends or retracts- they are different... Extending you are using the full area of the cylinder, but retracting you have to subtract the area of the cylinder rod. You are basically left with a doughnut, and multiply the pressure by that. This doesn't matter for the application you have - you are using the full area of the ram.

    Exactly. you just need to find how many square inches there face of the cylinder has because we know we are going to get 10,000 PSI(pounds FOR EACH square inch). The area of the face where force is applied will tell us how many square inches will have the 10000 pounds applied to them.
    I think for a lot of people, it’s understanding what they are trying to figure out that becomes the issue. Schools nowadays teach kids how to follow steps. Not how a problem solve.

      I have no dog in this fight but I don't follow how "The pound per square inch (abbreviation: psi) or, more accurately, pound-force per square inch (symbol: lbf/in2),[1] is a unit of measurement of pressure or of stress based on avoirdupois units." isn't force. "Pound-Force", sounds like force, one pound of force per sqin. Science make everything complicated.

    • @deezelfairy
      @deezelfairy Месяц назад

      @@frotobaggins7169 Because with psi we don't have the variable of how many actual square inches of area that pressure is acting on hence it's not a unit of force applied. Saying "we have 10000psi of force" doesn't mean anything, it can't be quantified.
      As an example, pound-feet is a unit of force because there is no other variable needed to quantify the numbers meaning.

      @@deezelfairy The square inchs is 1 is it not? Per square inch, right? I'm not trying to be difficult, I'm just saying it's confusing. I get that you would need a calculation to discover the total force over an area. However the force in a square inch is the psi, seems like that is a measurement of force. I guess that is what you are saying, that the psi is the pressure used in the calculation over the area. I just think it's different than say a watt which ISN'T a measure of light, it's a measure of heat. Therefore a watt doesn't tell you how bright a 25 w light bulb produces.

      @@frotobaggins7169 Regarding your analogy of a light bulb.
      You are wrong, a 'Watt' isn't a measure of heat, a watt is a measure of power as is 'horsepower'
