  • This is a review of the Ryobi 21 in. 40-Volt Brushless Cordless Electric Snow Blower Model # RY40860. This model comes with two 40-volt, 5 AH batteries, and one slow charger. You can buy it here through the Home Depot (affiliate links): homedepot.sjv.io/Ja12Q
I compared to to the Toro 21 inch, 60-volt Brushless Electric Snow Thrower. You can buy the Toro here: homedepot.sjv.io/dvARk
    Positives:
Plenty of Power for 2-6 inches of snow.
$200 less than the top-rated EGO, Snow Joe and Toro.
    Lightweight
    Negatives:
One slow charger so it takes six hours to charge both batteries
Handles have a lot of slop/wiggle up/down and give
Wants to wander away from the snow
Chute does not cleanly throw the snow.
Does not throw snow as far as Toro or Snow Joe cordless snow throwers
The on/off switch broke after 5 minutes of use.

I bought this Ryobi blower at an Amazon resale auction warehouse for $70, never used- it was damaged, the right wheel was broken off. Ordered the replacement for $8 USD, and I use my 6 AH Ryobi Batteries from my lawn mower. Yeah it's a bit cheap on the materials, but for $70 it's unbeatable. First large snow we had was just over 12" of wet, heavy snow, and this thing tore through it like it wasn't even there. 40 minutes of continual use cleared all my walkways, and driveway; both batteries still had half charge remaining. So yeah- these Ryobi units are absolutely worth it at such a low price point. Had my reservations after watching this video, but was pleasantly surprised- this guy just got a bad unit.

Well, I was hoping for a second try from you with the Ryobi. As our first snowfall was about to hit, I checked out other videos. While not as comprehensive as yours, I bought it due to the batteries I have including the 40v 6a. I've always been taught to let the machine do the work. The Ryobi performed excellently. I'm not at all disappointed with it. Perhaps, it's not a Toro but I've got a couple thousand invested in the Ryobi ecosystem. I wasn't going to cross over just for the Toro snowblower when I have 6 Ryobi 40v batteries . I don't regret this purchase.

@@Smooveg25 I drilled holes through the inner/upper section of each side, oh, 1/2" from the top of the outer/lower section. Then got a couple clevis pins at the hardware/farm store and stuck 'em through. Ugly, but the handle holds its position. 'Course, you could do this for whatever position/height you want to set the handle to, I just like mine fully extended. Night and day; went from a curse-inducing frustration to a flawless operation.

I bought this last November and I only got to use it once. I’m glad I returned it within my 90 day period. My handle was flimsy too and wouldn’t stay locked in the fully extended position. I contacted ryobi and they told me that I must have got a defective unit. It’s a shame because I really do like all my ryobi tools. Maybe gen 3 snowblowers will be better!

+1 the telescoping handle lock system is a poor design. The slightest forward force from the operator when you hit resistance, and the handle just slides all the way in to the shortest position. No good for a tall person with short arms. But I was out of luck warranty-wise, since I bought mine used. So I drilled holes thru the upper handle sections in the fully extended position, and put clevis pins thru them. Fixed, redneck style.

    Hey Paul… Great video!
I purchased the Ryobi 21” 40V blower with 2 - 7.5 Ah batteries from Home Depot Canada on November 15, 2021. Used the machine once myself for about 30-40 minutes and it worked great! Four weeks later, 2nd time out of the garage, my sister made one short pass with it and then it wouldn’t turn on again? (Batteries fully charged and well seated in machine). Ironically, I saw two of these units sitting at the customer service return counter (in parts) while at Home Depot December 27th. Will be returning for refund and sticking with my 18” Toro gas-powered unit. I hope other folks have better luck than I did with it.

Did you check that the contact going to the switches on the handle was connected well. I ran into a similar issue with my Ryobi mower. The gray lever for the handle lock (in the middle of the handle on either side) or the handle adjustment lever (at the bottom of the handle on either side) to make sure they were all the way in place and locked tight? I usually stored my mower folded up. When I tried to use it once, it was having a similar issue and found out there is a safety feature that if those aren't locked tight, the mower wouldn't work. Just a thought is all. Ever since I have made sure those are locked tight and have had no issues.

We had our first snow of the year in Ohio today and I tried my Ryobi 21" for the first time, purchased last week after my 12 year old gas blower finally gave out when I tried to fire it up last week to get ready for the snow forecast today. I was nervous because I read this review "after" my purchase. My Ryobi appears very similar to the one in the video, though I suspect some of the kinks are worked out in the one I bought.
I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised. I kept an open mind because there were plenty of things I did not like about my gasoline blower. On the plus side the gas blower was a tank that handled anything but on the minus side, it was hard to maneuver, and the carburetor would overheat and need rest and when the chute blocked with ice it took a few mins and a tool to clear it. We had a wet snow with depth of about 7" today, I have a 3 car garage and about 70' long driveway. I was able to finish the driveway, the batteries died out at about 30 mins as I was getting ready to do the sidewalks. The blower did great with wet snow, the discharge chute blocked up but not as often as my gas blower and it was easy to punch through it. I loved that it is light and was able to move pretty fast. I saved the snow at the end of my driveway for last, there was about 20" piled up as the city snow plow had been by twice, the Ryobi handled it. I was careful to take smaller slices than I would have with the old blower but cleared it all.
Regarding the batteries, they take several hours to recharge, I will keep them inside because i have read that the cold is not good for them and I purchased two more batteries from a secondary aftermarket supplier on Amazon today so I can always have two more ready to go. The secondary market batteries are less than half the price of the OEM Ryobi.
The only question in my mind is how to best use the blower to extend the batteries. The first time I used it I stopped the auger every time I turned or backed up thinking it would conserve the batteries. Not sure about that now because this afternoon, I kept the auger moving constantly and it lasted a bit longer this time. Perhaps the batteries get chewed up faster starting and stopping moreso than just letting them run non stop.

I would really like to see you do a retake on the Ryobi. If you ask me, it looked like it was doing a pretty good job until the unfortunate switch issue. I realize the toro gets high marks but the Ryobi does as well. I'm not just not finding a lot of videos of the machine tackling what you started to do with it in large snowfalls. The ones I find are not as thorough or they don't even perform a test under larger loads. I really like your videos.

I own this Ryobi, I should have listened to the advice to not buy it. Didn't even last 2 seasons. I just had my first 4 inch snow fall and It is now broken. Constantly stopped and fought with continually running before and now it seems the thrower bar is broken and no longer spins. It is now going in for repair and getting listed on Kijiji and I will go spend the money I should have last year.

I had exactly the same experience on a first use on the driveway. About 3/4 of the way through, i shut it off to move to the street...it would not restart and has not since. I then discovered that this is a common issue with this product, that the nearest repair depot is over 700 km away, and getting this yellow elephant there and back is my cost. So, i now have two useable batteries and an unusable after first use snowblower that is likely headed for the City landfill.

I bought this machine from Home D., because of the battery vs gas debate, but it was a disappointment. We had 6 inches of wet snow on the driveway and it could not handle it. The city plow came by and left another 8 inches at the end of the driveway, and it would bog down trying to remove it, a few times it would shut off.
    Returned it.

This model (RY40860) was known to have issues with the handle, and some motor stalling problems, but 2 upgraded new versions are now available at HD. Model RY40862VNM & RY408100 Whisper Series. Beefier handle and changes to the motor controller PCB. I can almost guarantee that the Toro is still a better unit but I understand that many people already have lots of Ryobi batteries & chargers (the most expensive parts) and just want something to get the job done even if it's not the best one out there. @PaulSikkema  Год назад

"flooded the engine" means too much fuel went through the carburetor of a gas engine and the extra fuel fouled out the spark plug. Carbs on single-stage gas snowblowers are designed so you can tilt the snowblower like I did at 8:30 and they won't flood. That said
This snowblower does not use a gas engine. It uses an electric motor and batteries instead. So, no worries about flooding or bad gas.
The problem with this snowblower is the switch on the handle that starts the electric motor failed.

Bought this as I am also invested in the 40V Ryobi ecosystem and have thoroughly enjoyed the other equipment (blower, lawnmower, weedwacker, etc.). Paid just over $500 for it at Home Depot - disappointed with the construction and plastic wheels. The operation itself was very straightforward (great), but the handle kept slipping (not great at all) and the chute kept slipping (vibration) from the side to front. Love the idea but very disappointed in the execution - returned it today. And picked up the gas Toro beast from servicing - finishing the job tomorrow. Perhaps the next model will work address the current model's shortcomings. Summary 2 batteries, great; operating simplicity, great; cheap parts and ineffective handle design, fail. Not worth any more than the cost of the two 40V 5 AH batteries... :(

The Toro's disadvantage (I assume) is that your battery/charger are only good for the snow blower. The EGO and Ryobi are each part of their respective tool _systems_, If you also cut wood, clear brush, etc., having a system of tools on the same battery/charger is valuable. If you're starting "from scratch", however, definitely a 60-volt blower would be the better choice.
I notice, BTW, that you didn't seem to hold the dead-man switch on the Ryobi for more than a fraction of a second when you had trouble with it. With mine, at times, you need to give it about 1-1.5 seconds before the motor starts. Don't know why, but it's just that way.

      @PaulSikkema  Год назад

Toro currently has about 35 tools that fit this battery and and will double the number of tools in 2023.
They are also introducing a commercial line of 60 volt tools and all the batteries are interchangeable between the homeowner and commercial tools. The new commercial batteries will charge in 15 minutes.
They have five different snowblowers, seven mowers from 20 inch up to 30 inches all running on this battery!

I do have an investment in split-shaft attachments (multiple brush cutters, pole saws, etc), so the split-shaft power head could be the "gateway drug". I did a lot of research at the Home Depot website. Seems like every brand of snowblower has a significant number of negative reviews, including Toro.
No brand guarantees satisfaction. It's kind of a crap shoot, really.
So my question is: what percentage of Ryobi snowblowers are lemons? 5%? 10%? 30%? 90%?

    • @PaulSikkema
      @PaulSikkema  Год назад

It's pretty much impossible to get the lemon percentage from either the brand or the retailer. Why would they tell us when they've probably got 5-10,000 of them stuffed on the top shelf of the stores and most likely more in the warehouses?
So, the only thing we can do is look at the reviews. On Amazon, I typically don't pick anything to buy unless it has 4 stars or better. If I really want an item and it's getting less than 4 stars I'll read the actual reviews.
In the case of this specific snow thrower, it now has around 30% 1-3 star reviews compared to 50% 4-5 star reviews. Anything over 20% 1-3 star reviews throws up a BIG red flag for me.
Almost all of the negative reviews are from last year's 2020-2021 snow season. I did this review at the end of the 2020 season so that tells me they didn't fix anything for the next season. All the more reason to find a different snow thrower to buy.

Everybody knows that you are supposed to oil the chute weather is WD-40 or Crisco oil. The only way that Ryobi machine operates like that is that there is a lack of Maintenance or the batteries were not charged when you first put them in. Semantics was played in this video very much. Once again my machine works fine. And whoever read this let me give you a piece of advice. If you don't take care of your machine it will not take care of you.

The video was edited to remove the cuss words...I have kids that watch this channel.
I highly recommend that you don't use WD-40 on this type of plastic. WD-40 contains alcohol and will melt certain plastics. By the way, if you leave your snowblower out in the cold garage (not the batteries) you don't need vegetable oil spray.
Lack of Maintenance? It's brand new - right out of the box. Batteries were fully charged using the supplied charger.
That said, Ryobi is sending a replacement. When that gets here I'll try this review again.

Ryobi has always been garbage, I’ve never had nothing but bad experiences with it. That’s why I’m never buying another ryobi product

And any Craftsman battery yard tool built after 2011. I do like the Ryobi Zero-Turn though. It's a good industry start for battery operated riding mowers.

I’ve had my Ryobi 40v brushless lawn mower for 4 years. It’s been bullet proof with awesome cutting. I have extremely thick grass and needs mowing every 4th day.

Yes, I want to be clear. I don't have any isssues with Ryobi - in fact they have a very good line of homeowner tools. It's just that this snow blower had a problem. By the way, I've contacted Ryobi and they have a replacement on the way.

Paul Sikkema how was the new replacement? Anymore issues?

No issues with the replacement but - You get what you pay for. This snowblower is just average for a cordless electric for speed and power. It has smaller batteries than the good ones and it takes forever to charge them. Spend a little more on a Toro or Snow Joe. You'll be glad you did.

The Ryobi Brushless 40V is a piece of crap. DO NOT BUY IT! It does a couple passes and then it dies out and won't start... on FULL BATTERY!
