Man Chris, great review. I want to check this out. Yes, it's about a musician's rise to fame, but really it's the oldest story in the world - someone fulfilling their dreams. I am So going to see this.
As for singers, hands down, Paul Simon. Nothing comes close. He was my early adult years providing comfort in very tough times.

Favourite singer/band? Mine has always prob been Dire Straits. Then The Angels and AC/DC, also Lynyrd Skynyrd, Led Zep, Stones, Beatles, Eagles, Floyd. Hard to pick just one from all those. Don't really have a solo singer fave, lots I like though. There would only be a handful which I could enjoy listening to most of their songs.
Since you asked who is my favorite singer - it is in fact Gianna Nannini, though surely together with Patti Smith, David Bowie, Lucinda Williams and I guess Elton John.
I mostly agree with your review of the film. I watched it twice, and it is surely interesting to know that Gianna worked closely with the writer/ director and with Leticia Tony on the production; judging from social media videos, she was present during most of the shooting and coached the actress vigorously. They seemed to have a lot of fun. All the episodes in the movie are in her autobiography (published 10 years ago), and she told many of these stories many times in interviews, long before the film was made. She has said, though, that her relationship with her father was never as tense and stern as portrayed in the movie, while I understand that she fought to be accepted as a woman in rock music and music business much more than shown in the film.
Knowing all her countless albums in-depth, I can confirm that the songs are the original versions performed by Gianna herself. I'd like to stress, though, that her whole intense body of work is waay more versatile than presented in the film and in these few years of her 50-year long carreer.
My favorite band is The Smiths, and my favorite singer is Kate Bush.
I'm 99% sure the singing voice in the movie belongs to Gianna Nannini. And the subject is based on her autobiography, so I guess the story is also (more or less) true to her
