My grandmother showed me how to fish when I was 6 years old and caught a 1 pound bass on a cane pole. I thought it was a giant. Ref: the video. I am still learning from guys like you and others. Randy, I'm an old-school guy who's been fishing club and state level tourneys since the mid 90's. I agree with you, it's very frustrating to hear the old man comments and see individuals with very little experience winning high level tournaments when you have 30+ years of experience developing your craft and they are clueless to the art of bass fishing.
I compare it to an amateur golfer playing against Phil Mickleson or another experienced pro with a golf ball that has radar built into it to guide it toward the green. It removes the skill level, and you don't have to factor anything else into it. Just hit the ball, and it lands where you program it to.
If you think that's not possible, look it up. That's why sports have rules to keep everyone honest and limits are in place for what they can use to compete.

Most of these younger anglers are "bass fisherman" because they can compete and look cool or post pictures on social media to look cool. If most of these guys couldn't fish tournaments and couldn't post their accomplishments on Facebook etc. They would quit fishing all together. It's all about being seen and gratification. There ain't many young guys out there that would truly have a blast fishing by themselves in a flatbottom boat where no one could see them or know what they did.

I learned to fish from the bank with a cane pole down in Mississippi with live crickets. Both sets of grandparents loved fishing. Great memories ! I was 36 years old when I could afford my first boat. Joined a bass club. Learned from the old timers in that club. Great bunch of guys. They wouldn’t tell you everything but enough to get a guy going. One of them died during a tournament on a rough day back 18 years ago. Old Bert loved to fish more than anything. Lived for it! Died doing what he loved. Well up into his 70’s he could hold his own. I will always remember the passion and the sparkle in his eye during a meeting or before a tournament.

This was coming from a constructive criticism point of view. It was a gem. And electronics played almost no part. I'd look forward to watching that show. It was real skills and was man against fish. But Clunn was and will forever be an icon. He would literaly sleep in his boat before the tournament just for the purpose of getting one with the water. It's a different game now. But purists are still out there. Just less. We owe it to our kids to keep this great family sport real

This is hilarious... That's like saying if a person can't run an efficient business without phones and email are not as intelligent as an old timer that was able to run a business in the 60s, times change and people adapt using technology. The truth is, the most intelligent are able to utilize technology to up their game, whatever game that might be - OLD OR YOUNG. As I get older, I recognize this and am not too stubborn to refuse to adapt.

This is not the same thing. It's about learned skills during many years of experience, not technology. These are totally different topics. Fishing tournaments need to be regulated by what can and cannot be used, just like any other competive sport. FFS should not be allowed in competition, period!

I've been bass fishing for almost 50 years, done some guiding and some tournaments, and while I have accumulated a LOT of experience and knowledge, I STILL have days that I struggle. I also listen to these youngsters when they speak in "absolutes" and find it both sad and funny. They think that because they've caught some fish and maybe even done well in some local tournaments, they know EVERYTHING, when the fact of the matter is, they simply haven't lived and fished long enough in a variety of situations to validate their arrogance.
When you talk to them and try to pass on some of your knowledge, you can almost see their eyes roll...they ACT like they're listening, but, their minds are already made up that they're the new "Golden Child" of fishing, and there is NOTHING you can educate them about.
In a way, I'm glad I'm "old" and won't have to be around a lot longer to see what fishing is going to degrade into....even moreso than it already has.
But, some of them don't know that even at MY age, I had my best day EVER at age 71. ......21 bass......131.5 lbs.....best 5 @ 38.1....doing something WITH something that most of these kids have never seen.
    PS...I don't even know how to set a waypoint...LOL

And if you don't think Jacob Wheeler can't break down a lake without electronics, you are sadly mistaken. That boy can fish, he was a total hammer before FFS but he adapted... And if it's primarily because he's younger, don't hate on it, the boy can't help how old he is lol

And if a exact replica of Jacob was born on the exact day you were, I bet he would be a hammer in your era as well... Tell me I'm wrong...some people just have the gift

I am constantly learning from content I view on RUclips. It is getting harder each year to catch bass. There are days you load the boat and other days you have the big zero. The empty bag is getting more frequent on my lakes.

Randy...join the PMTT and see how you do. Everyone can catch bass on a daily basis. Nothing you are doing is new.
The biggest mistake from any hunter or fishing angler. Never pretend you are the best. A old dog can be taught new tricks from rookies.

I did better on candlewood lake last year when I had zero electronics' then most times when I bring em. Man; I highly reccomend everyone take em off the boat one time on a pressured resivoir- use visual cues, shoreline cues, memory of where points, humps,& spots are. Fishin' blind keeps you on top of the game for sure- I even caught offshore smallmouth blind casting around spots bait hangs out often. ALL the advice I've followed is from you& all them guys you mentioned + more all older than me- all authentic old- school bass fishermen. Same with thr few guys who had the patience to show me a thing or three- all real technique, pure bass knowledge. To me; you and the other old-timer's are bass gold.

You’re doing a great job of growing the sport of bass fishing by singling out every angler under 30 using electronics saying they’re a cheater Randy.

Not all experience is good. Many have many years of bad experience and confuse that with “wisdom.”
Also, most anything anyone has “invented” such as techniques has also been done by someone else. There’s millions of people fishing. No one is pioneering anything except lying to themselves.

Thank you for your wisdom. I have never owned any fishing electronics and I never will. I freely admit I don’t catch that much but what I do catch is on my own out of my canoe or from the bank. I have zero respect for “outdoorsmen” who buy their success. I don’t even fish for bass as they are polluted with mercury and should not be eaten.

Todays young anglers take for granted all the wisdom available to them on computer. The electronics and boats are light years ahead of what was available in the 70s / 80s. Id love to see a tx trail that only allows 150 hp and flashers! No Respect
