I remember seeing this featurette. It was on the DVD Extras of JOE THE KING. It was interesting to see the guy I was used to seeing as an actor as an actual independent filmmaker here. Whaley tells us what it was like putting this movie together. And the experience it all was. It was all the more grueling as this was a very personal story for him.
It makes sense Sundance is making this behind-the-scenes interview. They're the ones who honored Whaley's script for this movie. I was expecting Whaley to tell us that he was nominated for an Open Palm for making this film. He won the Best Screenwriting Award at Sundance. It tied with the screenplay for Guinevere by the late Audrey Welles. A tragedy she is no longer with us.
This film... did touch me. I felt for Joe. I knew where he was headed. I wish he could have some kind of outlet, something that would give him salvation from this entirely seemingly doomed life. The best thing his father does at the end for his own son (aside from admitting he loves him) is telling him not to go down the same path he did and end up like him. "The sins of the father... " This is a touching film indeed...

This is a VERY powerful movie. However, I read this scene differently than how the director apparently intended it. The whole reason this kid is going to prison (yep, that's what a juvenile detention center is) is because of his old man. His weak and obviously too late advice and that whiskey soaked "love you" is a cruel joke on this poor kid. Let's face it, Bob will forget all about his teary remorse about half way into his next bottle of Wild Turkey. Trust me when I say that I know his kind.

A beautiful film. Thank you, Frank Whaley. It moved me to tears and it made me think of the thousands of Joes out there. I have never given up on hope, and your film shows there is hope.

Frank, if you see this: I fucking love you! JOE THE KING touched my heart like very few films have done. It's in my top 10 (with the likes of The Elephant Man, Ordet, and Breaking The Waves). Vastly underrated picture. Bless your heart, wherever you are. Like Sunday, Like Rain is lovely, as well. Keep making films!!!

By the time it happens; it's too late. The other party is manchurian candied. I would suggest genius: but they say you they never know and i respect that like Cohen.
