Blender Grease Pencil Head-Turn Part 1: Drawing

- Опубликовано: 14 июл 2020
- In this video, we will see how to construct the basic objects required for the rig, from sketch to a fully rendered Grease Pencil drawing.
This video is one of four, detailing the character’s creation, from sketch to model, to rig and finally covering my animation workflow.
I have added English subtitles. If you would be willing to translate these into a different language, I would be happy to publish these to help others follow along. If you are able to help, contact me via the email in the 'about' tab: ruclips.net/user/sketchysquirr...

V.kind comment thank you! :)
BEST SO FAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
You'd be surprised at the low level of some trolls. It's their nature. Give them the best tut and they'll downvote it.
Fantastic work! Even 3 years later this is super useful, thank you.
Thank you! I'm so glad you are finding it useful!
Dude, I gotta say, simple things like using the x axis -1 to mirror your drawing is genius to me lmao , I would always change the perspective from front to back if I wanted to reproduce the mirroring effect .
Glad it was helpful. Hopefully, rigging video will be out early this week.
@@SketchySquirrel That's awesome , cannot wait !
This is AMAZING for your first tutorial. I have learned so much from this series. This series has really filled in gaps in grease pencils tutorials with the other tutorials that are out there. THANK YOU SO MUCH! Please keep up the work. I am learning a lot still.
I also really dig your style!
Hey there, thanks for your encouragement. I hope they can help - I'll definitely be playing with Grease Pencil more in the near future.
DUDE! You just won a new subscriber! Can't wait for the rigging process
Thanks for the sub! Rigging audio will be done today - hopefully will publish in the next couple of days.
YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES
You have no idea how much I refreshed waiting for this
I hope these help. I have the next few almost ready to post also.
@@SketchySquirrel Nice
Im doing a one week animation challenge and it finishes on sunday (so far I messed up) but Ill be sure to use your techniques in my next animations !
This is the tutorial I was looking for!
Amazing! Instantly subscribed, can't wait to see the rest.
I absolutely love this series! Thanks a ton!
Man you are a legend, totally amazing stuff.
oh my, this is just what i need. thank you so much for making this!
Thank you for introducing the production process.
that looks awesome, great video
This is incredible! thank you for making these tutorials
What I find most amazing about doing this tutorial is that I have to unlearn everything I know about Photoshop and Harmony. Even though the end result and some of the concepts are familiar, the fact is that Blender is a 3D program in spite of the apparent similarities to Photoshop. The end result might be similar but the way to get there and to conceive of it is totally different.
Thank you so much for this!
very fantastic ... can't wait to see part 2
Thank you, the next video will be out this week.
AMAZING! SIMPLY AMAZING!!!
Thank you, you're very kind.
Such a beautiful video and work process.
So calm and sensitive.
Sweet. Looking forward to the rest of the videos. :)
Thanks. I'm just recording the audio for the rigging video today - will publish early this week.
Unbelievable .
Thank you for this video.👌👌👌
Wow this was fast! Already loving it
So glad its useful. I'm just recording the audio for the rigging video today - out "soon" :)
Awesome...finally!!

Great video. Thanks for the info. Just subscribed to your channel as I'm getting into the grease pencil having always been very 3D in Blender before. Loving it.)

Great!! thank you !!! and a very expressive and inspiring character by the way.... thanks
You are so kind!
This is impressive AF, Iv been on blender for years, got the skills then switched off for a bit, now back after like 2 years. Iv barely used grease pencil but dabbled, but these tutorials are maaad good explainers, Just watching this I can completely translate into my own work, Thank you for explaining so clearly.
Thank you so much for this series. I've been waiting patiently for this and I'm not disappointed :)

I'm really excited about part 2 :-) !!!!
Just posted :)
@@SketchySquirrel yeahhhh
This is so great to see all the process, thanks so much ! :)
You are so welcome!
this is wonderful. You have a great teaching style. Thanks for making this tut series- exactly what I was looking to learn.
You're very welcome!
This gives me more hope that I can draw a full scene in blender without a stylus and pad. I'm bad at drawing, but even worse at drawing on a computer with a mouse. I see your cursor moving around as you draw, and can tell it was mouse work. Thank you for this! I almost gave up on my cute little dog cartoon.
Hi there, I'm sorry to say that I did in fact use a graphics tablet for this project, however Blender Grease Pencil does offer many features, such as smoothing, and line and curve tools, that makes drawing with a cursor much easier. Another thing you can do, is to draw on paper, and trace this using these tools. I wish you all the best, I would love to see your dog cartoon :D
@@SketchySquirrel Just to update about the dog cartoon....
I deleted that blender file because the armature of my main character dog had a lot of problems. So many that I was completely unable to fix it. It had something to do with the origins or transforms. I don't even know, at one point I set origin to geometry and that somehow rotated the armature 90° while basically shotgunning my little dogs parts across the canvas and rotating them in various directions and degrees, even though I was only ever in ortho view. I didn't have the dogs lower jaws and tongues done yet anyway. I figured 5 days of work is nothing to a learning curve. I will rebuild an even better set. I will post the video link in another response when I finish.
@@tpros6289 Yeah, rigging can be frustrating, but as you say, every issue is just you figuring it all out. I look forward to it :D
Let me know if you need any help
thank God, someone who's actually practical. can't even tell his a beginner... thank yo man.
Thanks for your kind words. I hope it's helpful.
Just discovered your channel! You are really talented, and I'm surprised you don't have a larger following. Keep at it! With time you will get there. You just got yourself a new subscriber. Can't wait to go through this course with you :)

Thanks for watching! Rigging video nearly finished - hopefully out in the next few days.
Sketchy Squirrel Im super excited!
Oh god u are send by heaven, i searched and waited so long for a nice grease pencil tutorial like u did, pls keep going. Thank u so much for this !
Thank you so much 😀 We can learn together :)
凄いです!!amazing!!
Its good to find a tutorial that's easy to understand. Clear and easier to take in than some of the fast talking ones or where English is a second language. Nothing at all wrong with that, just hard to focus on what's being said sometimes rather than the focus on the tutorial. Thank you!!
Hey Dee, thanks for the encouragement!
Awesome!
Thanks! Hope they help.
I used to be an animator now I am a programmer trying to get back into animation. Great work. You understand blender and I admire you stepping out and doing such an involved tutorial. I learned from your technique. I would like to see some more. You will always have trolls people who are just negative.
Thanks Jesse, I appreciate it. I would imagine that you would find rigging easier than most, as at times it can feel a lot like programming :)
Great tutorial! Thanks!
Hey Joakim, thank you for taking the time to comment!

Very nice. thanks.
Thank you too!
Excellent work, congratulations. I'm in doubt between drawing with Toon Boom Harmony or Blender, but after this video, I'm going to delve deeper into Blender, as it combines 3D, 2D and sculpting. Thank you.
amazing you are my hero

Thanks for the comment. Yes, the Grease Pencil development team are adding to Blender's toolkit more every release. I'm excited to see where this will lead us.

Sketchy Squirrel, I appreciate the great time and effort you put into making this tutorial series, but after trying it over the past week I can see why there are so few tutorials on this subject. I am actually trying to have a grease pencil object serve as the facial features while using a a 3d head and body, but this method is so error prone and convoluted I can see why there is so few tutorials on this topic.
Hi there. Sorry for the long delay. I know what you mean, grease pencil wasn't designed to be used like this. The way I see it, is the more we use it like this, the more support will be added. Regarding the 2D attached to 3D, this guy seems to have done something like that ruclips.net/video/7o5JGXU-V2Y/видео.html Perhaps he can help to solve any of those errors you mentioned. Thanks :D
WHAT...MAGIC...IS THIS???
No magic just illusion :) Thanks for the comment!!!
you saved me a month of practes
I'm glad. Be sure to share what you make, I'd love to see it. :)
Man,whenever you do every move, please explain it!
Hey Sketchy Squirrel, your tutorials are among the ones that inspired me to make a very easy to make mouth rig that supports rigify and Rhubarb auto lip sync. I uploaded step by step tutorials for you guys.
Thanks, Mundo, I've watched some of your videos and you've done some really cool rigs. right now I'm trying to figure out how you rigged the IK knees for that rigify character.
@@SketchySquirrel thanks a lot and good luck ! let me know if u need any help :)
This is fantastic. Can't wait for the future videos. Please do specify that how do you create a slight distance between the various elements of face? I noticed that Nose is slightly ahead of face. Do you use the canvas and move it ahead and back?
In object mode, you press G for move and Y for the y-axis, then move the mouse cursor along until the object is in the desired position.
Thanks for the encouragement, I hope this answered your question.
Thank again :)
Joel
Looking at all the lovely comments you have, not surprised why!! Thank you so much for this
So nice of you to take the time to comment. Thanks!
Naice
I love you my bro
Huge thank you for the encouraging comment!
The tutorial is very clear explained, but some things you use, you cant find back in older versions like 1.79
Thanks for your comment. Blender is certainly always developing. For these tutorials Blender 2.83 to 2.90.1 have been used, even with this slight version change, the way we apply modifiers, for example, has been reworked. You are quite correct, Grease Pencil has changed enormously from 2.79.
Please do more on Grease Pencil animation tutorals. You are changing the face of Blender
Hello!
How did you get to the white workspace? I use a 3.4.1 Blender and going to the 2D Animation workspace and there is an orthographic projection from the camera but no white background.
Have not enough thanks! Your work is great!
Found the style I was looking for, however I see this is 3 years old, would you be able to to it faster now with grease pencil on 3d version of the face? I'm coming from 100% 2d animation software with some 3D camera capabilities, to brand new to Blender, and this style is what I want, however, I'm seeing the updates allows one to make a 3D version with grease pencil drawing on the 3D version, with other aspects of newer blender versions.
How would you approach this now with updates in blender?
Following your tutorial. Just wondering why at time 4:32 when I fill the base color, the sketch in my viewport area cannot be seen but in your case you can still see the sketch.
To keep your sketch visible, either shift the sketch in front on the Y axis, or under the object settings of the sketch object, under the view port display, check "in front". This will mean it will be displayed in front of all objects despite it's position in space. Hope that helps.
@@SketchySquirrel had same issue and your fix worked. Is there a way to make it so the base color that is outside of the outline is nonvisible though ?
this is an amazing tutorial but im stuck on a certain character im busy making
the character is Jenny Wakeman from nickelodeon sometimes this characters cheek sticks out to either side of her face in a 3/4 view and the cheek goes away when facing in a front view is there a way to key frame the characters face to make this cheek bend and flatten if possible
Just finished going through the tutorial and it was fantastic...
Although I'm a bit of a beginner here and sometimes I found it hard to follow what you were doing.
Having Keystrokes appear on the screen while you work would help. Thanks!
I'm glad that you're enjoying it. Yes, thank you for the feedback, I've been adding keystrokes in my more recent videos. :D

this is an incredible run through and its helping me alot. I AM A SUUUUUUPER BEGINNER AT BLENDER GP. not gonna lie tho i need more detail, like how did your pencil change the thickness lol, any recommendations for detailed instructions??? or could you revisit this one!!! that would be awesome!!!
Hi there. I'm so glad that it helped. I'm sorry that I couldn't be more in depth. The idea is that I would be able to tackle bigger topics, if I didn't go through step by step. However, I do understand the need for that. So If this series is a bit overwhelming. I've put some links (not all of them work anymore, sorry) in the description of this video. Hopefully they will help get you to a point, where detailed instruction isn't as important. Thanks again, for the comment, and the feedback. :D
WWOOOOOOOOOWW
OMG OMG I didn't Grease pencil can do that .
Hope it inspires you to use GP in this way.
Great series Thanks so much. But may I know how you are erasing the line @5.51?
Hi there, sorry for the late reply. I wasn't erasing the line. I was colouring the nose, and because it was the same colour as the face, and it was on top of the face, it appears as though I'm erasing the line, when in fact I'm just drawing over it. :)
I have downloaded your blender file on description above. Quick question, how to move the head for the pose?
Hi there. Inorder to move the head, simply enter pose mode with the armature selected, then you can just move and rotate the main head bone, the rectangle around the head. I hope that I've understood your question correctly, and I hope that this helps. Feel free to ask any more questions you may have.
can you show us how to animate whole body? like moving arms and stuff
I hope to show how to simply rig and animate a full character in the future, but until then, here are some great Grease Pencil rigging tutorials by Level Pixel Level ruclips.net/video/FgfzqGxpUxk/видео.html
