I like it! We did the same sort of thing when we were kids. A farmer would like us to "clean" the snapping turtles out of his farm ponds. We would get 6-8 plastic milk jugs a few feet of thin wire or real thick fishing line and a big bass hook. Tied the line to the handle on the jug and the other end went to the hook. We baited the hook with whatever was handy at the time, minnows, worms, cut up fish what ever. Then toss the whole thing into the pond and come back later. We would watch the jugs on the surface and the ones that moved the most had a turtle hooked on it. My buddy had a small row boat, read canoe, we would launch and go around and grab the jugs. Now as you might imagine the snapper wasn't real happy about the situation, to say the least. When we dragged the snapper up on the bank he/she wasn't in a real good mood. We would use a baseball bat and knock it on the head to kill it. The meat didn't go to waste either. One farmer would clean the turtle and make soup with it. There was another old timer that cured the meat somehow, I never asked how, and would use it all winter. Can't do it anymore fishing laws have changed.

When I was a girl my babysitter had a brother in law who owned chicken houses next to her. They shared a pond between them. We went to the chicken house and got a young chicken and some hay baling twine and tied the chicken to it. We caught a large snapper with that and she took it home and had it bite a hoe. When it stick its neck out she cleaned it and processed it. She cooked it for that night’s dinner but when my brother had his turn to eat it he spit that turtle right out on his shoulder - it was a yellowish gross looking mess much the texture of pate’ and I wouldn’t try it. I’ve never eaten turtle to this day.

That is what we call a trout line. At the lake, we used cottonseed cakes on hooks. We also used plastic gallon milk jugs. The jugs are hooked together by a line so they don’t drift away. Then, if I remember right the one end is tied to the shore. We caught beautiful buffalo fish and other kinds in about 15 feet deep water. This video is a good way to fish, and what I love is that it is using things you have, to make it. You do have to catch or buy your shrimp. Thanks for the video. It brought back memories.

They used to call Australia multicultural but it's become multi racial with waring factions. Every second night on the news some immigrant out western Sydney who does not even speak english has been stabbed or shot by another. One ran down the street chasing his attacker with a knife still in him..
It didn't used to be like this here 20-30 years ago. All i meant is i'd be happy if the people who dont notice thumb tacks in their feet to stay in their own country, rather than immigrate to Australia. We already have a mad mixed up mob here.

Love fetid swamp fish, they are my favourite, cannot tell if it's the hydro-carbons or heavy metals that make them taste so good.

Catfish? Never had it, didn't think it was a good fish to eat. Don't get them in Yorkshire as far as I know - but I don't river fish anyway, only sea.

Before when it was safe to eat river fish where I live, and in the southern states of the USA where they are grown on fish farms catfish are a very common food. I never really liked it. Find it kind of gamine and oily. But it’s very loved by many.

There are lots of things we can eat if we had to. That doesn't mean I would. I have tried catfish and bullhead and won't again.

Here in the US we use whole 2 liter bottles or milk jugs and fishing line and a hook and catch 5lb - 8lb fish. We call them jug lines or trotlines and we tie them to a tree near the lake or river bank so the fish don't take off.

I like the styrofoam base to steady the bottle. I don't like to fish but I love to eat fish. I am so going to do this.
