    The additional chain are stoppers, that hold the chain in place until they let go the anchor. The crew removes the stoppers, stands by the chain brake and on the order let go, they pay out chain at a rate that the chain doe not "run-away" . The stopper is a turnbuckle and attachs to the chain link. Great video!

    I can only admire you for doing so well with such primitive instructions. The chain stuff for the guard rail... that is awesome. Reminds me on what it was on the Bismarck. I am speaking of the decks guard rail only now. The guard rail on the superstructure was ll like the standard guard rail here. Every single post needed a small whole to be drilled into the deck (0,4 mm). The posts had small wholes like the eye of a needle and to set up the guard rail a thread was spun from one post to the other all a round the ship. And every post had 3 wholes... took me a week to complete the outer guard rail.

      So these days I’ve started prepainting the railing before installing it. I use an airbrush to try and get every nook and cranny. But once it’s installed, I just use a paint brush and slowly work my way along each visible surface.

      Thanks was thinking about doing the same. Should I primer it first?

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  2 года назад

      Yes. Ideally hit it with a metal primer of your choice. Then I think you’re safe to go straight to the final color. If you want to be safe you can do a regular primer between coats.

      How did you go about painting the railing and also how or what did you use to shape the ladders?

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  3 года назад +1

      I cover all of that in a video at some point in this build. But I pre spray them before removing them and then touch them up after they are installed. I just use a PE bender and tweezers to shape the ladders.

    Do you have any kits that would be suitable for a beginner? I am a 21-year-old who is looking to get into model kits again. I put together cars when I was younger so I don't want something that is too easy. I also don't have that large of a budget, maybe 200 max. Thank you! I love the videos!

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  4 года назад

      Hey Gavyn! So I started out on cars when I was a kid. My Dad wanted me to have an understanding of how they went together and what parts do what. That was invaluable. Then I got into 1/48 scale airplanes. I think a 1/48 scale BF-109 by Eduard or Tamiya would be a great place to get back into it. They are around 30-40 bucks I think? But you'll be challenge with some small parts, and some simple parts. The paint jobs can be easy, or very complex depending on the camo scheme you pick out.
      If you want to go with a ship. I highly recommend a 1/350 scale destroyer. Get the USS Fletcherj or Gearing or something made by Tamiya. Everything is small. And there is at least one of everything on there. So you'll get your feet wet but you don't have to worry about getting bogged down with having to make 52 twenty mm cannons. You'll only have to make 5 or 6. They are pretty affordable too.
      Let me know what you decide on!!!

      The Midwest Model Shop Have you ever done the Revell 1:72 us Gato class submarine kit before? My fiancé’s great grandfather was on the uss barb which is a gato class submarine and I was thinking at that kit. The paint looks pretty simple and the parts don’t seem that hard. Was wondering if you’ve had any experience with it! Thanks for the other suggestions. I will definitely look into those.

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  4 года назад +1

      No I haven’t built that kit myself. But there are plenty of great videos out there covering it. Yes, I think it’s a pretty simple kit, too. It is BIG, just like the 1/200 scale ships. I wouldn’t hesitate to go down that road if a “big” kit has peeked your interest.

    What is the benefit of installing the rail and then painting it in place? Any tips for doing so?

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  4 года назад +1

      This was a long time ago and I don’t do it this way anymore. If you watch my Missouri build, I demo the new way. Which is paint the railings with an airbrush first, then install them, and then follow up with a brush to touch them up. But when I did this, I may have been concerned about damaging the paint so much that it was t worth pre painting? Either way, I end up painting the railing before installing it, and then again after it’s installed.

    How do you do the curves in the railing? I have tried different things but it is still hard to make conform to the piece it needs to be placed on.

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  3 года назад

      I usually roll the rail around my knife handle or a sharpee. Just easy the curve into the railing until you have the shape you want.

    Not 100% sure, but I am betting your “come alongs“ are in reality turnbuckles, used to tighten the chains. Served 20 years on various aircraft carriers, and I seem to remember turnbuckles on every lifeline. I wasn’t a boatswains mate, who would’ve been responsible for these, I was an aircraft mechanic.

    Ive got the Trumpeter Missouri. Having a problem with the wood decking. Even though i used sandpaper and alcohol to clean the deck, the adhesive on the decking piece isnt very strong and is peeling upwards on the edges. Any ideas on what I can use to hold it down?

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  5 лет назад

      So that adhesive isn’t very good as you already mentioned. IF you can get it lifted enough, use gorilla wood glue on it. Then work the deck down with your fingers, applying pressure until it sticks. You can also use thin superglue, but be careful applying it. The best thing, would be to take the deck off, if you can without wrecking it, and applying wood glue to the whole thing. In my series on the Arizona, I show how I applied the wood deck using wood glue. I hope this all helps!

    Out of curiosity, I found some miniature chain that might work. In your estimation, would 40 links per inch be about the right size? I was thinking of using little brass eyelets instead of the come-along latches and drill tiny holes to mount them. That is when I finally order my kit :-)

    • @TheMidwestModelShop
      @TheMidwestModelShop  6 лет назад +2

      Hey Rich! So at this scale, it is very EASY to just paint the railing with a brush after it is installed on the ship. I did try to "save some time" later in the build by painting some of the railing on the PE set before installing it, with my airbrush... however, I found that I had to go back and do a lot of touching up after it was installed. Almost negating the effort put into painting things before installing them.
