- Here is the 175 subscriber special, as promised. Thanks to everyone who helped me achieve this feat by subscribing!
In this video, we will hear some of Australia's most iconic steam whistles from a variety of locomotives recorded in 2020. Railways across the country all used different whistles, made by different manufacturers in different periods. This video shows 5 of many different types of whistles still in use on preserved steam locomotives in South Australia and Victoria.

I hope you enjoy this video and I hope it gives you an insight to the various whistles that can be heard in the country.
As always, any corrections I need to make should be stated in a comment, which I will list here in the description as I find them. Cheers

1:18 holy cow that is one cinematic whistle!!!
bro nah bro rlly say holy cow bro 💀💀
@@aussie_trainspotting_videos holy pig?
@@aussie_trainspotting_videos Bro can’t understand that it’s just an expression.
That VR short-bell 5 chime is awesome!
Thanks!
Just with the SAR whistles, the Nathan 963-A-1030 bell (chime) on the Rx's are genuine Nathan not SAR copies. And the modified Nathan 963-A-1030 on the 620 class are designated 10-L-727B after the drawing number and with the B revision for 621-629.
Wow that is a fabulous video that really showcases the different types of Locomotive whistles! Congrats on 175 subs VT29! :)
Thanks! A proud moment for my channel!
Wow, I definitely need to take some videos of my own next time I'm in Victor Harbour
Definately worth it!
I really like the rx207/224 whistle, it sounds great. Also have you been on the seaford railway line, it's on Adelaide metro, and sometimes they have the diesels on the line. Anyways the Adelaide 4000 class train has a great two tone horn
The 4000 class EMUs have a Kockum Sonics MKT75 311 and 370. I have made observations on the Standard Gauge Vlocity, and 4000 class, and noticed they have the same horns. I did research (and by that, I mean; I watched Tazzie Transport's horn video), and found the standard gauge Vlocity have the same horn. I later found out they were both built by Bombardier Transportation, which is probably why they have the same horns. The design of the 4000 class EMUs design was based of the Vlocity.
207 and 621’s 6 chimes sound like whistles you’d hear in movies. They just have such a unique tone and sound to them that I enjoy it! 😄
Also, quick edit : Whenever I hear 207's 6 chime from a distance (Like for example 1:40, 2:04, 2:40, and 2:57), it almost sounds like the Grand Trunk Western 6 chime that was used on Grand Trunk Western U3b #6325. I have a DVD called "Ohio Steam Spectacular", and at some parts of the program, the sound of her whistle sounded nearly identical to 207's, because it was being blown quite some distance from the camera it was recording it from.
Best thing is, 207's is a standard Nathan 963-a-1030 6 chime!
Fantastic! Absolutely fantastic!
Updated version will be coming some time soon!
Thanks for sharing! Love the Rx207's whistle, reminds me of the Pere Marquette 1225's whistle the way it used to sound.
It's because they're both Nathan 6 chime whistles. Rx207 as well as Rx224 both have Nathan 963-a-1030 whistles, as fitted when William Webb (who formerly worked on the MKT railroad) became commissioner of the SAR in the 1920s .
Glad you enjoyed the video!
@@VT29steamtrain Interesting! Yeah 1225 has a very worn Nathan 6 Chime haha. Some of the chimes being louder on Rx207s whistle reminded me of 1225s whistle in 1988.
@@aceoftrainsproductions745 yes, Rx207's whistle needs some attention as it is getting worn. Recently restored 224's whistle can be heard in my two most recent steamranger videos, as it's previously never before used whistle had only had about a month of use in my SteamRanger top and tail video but by the video Chasing Rx224 on the Cockle Train, her whistle has been worn in a bit and now sounds more like your average Nathan 6 chime
nice cant wait for next years open day for SRV
Cool hope you get to go eventually

That's a hornshow called "shave and a haircut", it usually involves 5 short toots responded by another two. In this case, it was diesel S313 followed by one of Steamrail's steam engines. It was worth keeping in the diesel's horn to show the hornshow, otherwise it may have been a little out of context.
epic
Yep!
4:28 i thought it was going to be a shave and a haircut
Sure is!
@@VT29steamtrain but that steam train after that whistle said ‘two bits’
@@VT29steamtrain oh and also 5:17
@@GoldM4official done by yours truly!
Rx207 is one of the greatest steam ranger whistle is ever
yeah its good alright, however I prefer 224's as it received a new nathan 6 chime when it came back into service in may. All Rx class locomotives had/still have Nathan 963-A-1030 6 chime whistles, given to them some time while WA Webb was the SAR commisioner back in the 20's. Also noticed your username says Rx702, however 702 is not a Rx class but Rx207 is a Rx class. :D
I also prefer rx224
@@Adelaideplanes same here
224 is best, 207 is second and 520 is third!
@@VT29steamtrainwhat whistles did they have when Webb wasn't commissioner
3:27 Who did that other horn?
What's the purpose of those beacon lights?
SteamRanger heritage railway has fitted beacon lights to all of their locomotives as a way to make them more visible to motorists and pedestrians at level crossings, as they have had many train v pedestrian or vehicle accidents over the years.
If you are interested, I recently uploaded an updated version of this video.
Rx207’s Nathan 6 chime sounds a lot like southern 630’s Central of Georgia 6 chime
I think Flying Scotsman had a South Australian Railways copied Nathan 6 chime whistle?
Flying Scotsman had a South African Railways 3 chime for a while, not sure what whistle it had in the states. The rest of the time it has had its terrible single chime
@@VT29steamtrain I thanks it had that whistle in Australian and a emergency horn from 1988 to 1989.
@@Mr.RailYard-LJLRailYard I dont think it did to my knowledge, I never remember them using it. Maybe for just a trip idk
ruclips.net/video/rNzD0pJTZGo/видео.html the South Australian whistle is under the cab on the driver side. The LNER Bell whistle is used to.
By the way, it did actually have a Nathan 963-a-1030 6 chime from an SAR 720A class Berkshire while it was over here. Authorities were concerned its single chime wasn't a decent enough warning device.
hol up,isnt vr the finnish railway company?
VR is Victorian Railways
Hi
Hey
Sounds nearly as good as Victorias 5 chimes
That is because this video includes VR 5 chimes
@@VT29steamtrain cool
What about wombat
Yeah, you referring to the NA class? One of which was named "Wombat" in this show come monday midnight put out by the ABC many years ago
I'm not even from Aussie and I know that show I'm from NZ we have the big ka locos and very epic whistles
@@jaidenjohnson4278 yes, very nice 5 chime whistles you have over there. Will definitely come down for a visit one day
Not just 5chimes some are 8or9 depending on the loco
@@jaidenjohnson4278 I've never heard of a 8 or 9 chime in my life
American whistles
no way - steam train should sound like a steam train - not like several organpipes at the same time.
German steam trains sound right.
Looks like you've been introduced to the world of chime whistles!
@@VT29steamtrain its a disgrace yerks.
@@hansdonnerborg7153 I actually like them better
@@hansdonnerborg7153 much better than your annoying single chime whistles
@@hansdonnerborg7153 they have been used by locomotives worldwide, you germans hardly even get whistles from drivers and even if you did I'd be asking them to not use it again
