- Due to experiencing one of the biggest near-failures of my short repair career, I decided to document and post the rebuild process for this elegantly simple and complicated lens.
I hope it helps somebody out, and if you ever have any questions, please feel free to contact me, I'll do what I can to lend a hand. Good luck!
Very well explained as it goes, I would watch and listen for two hour this kind of little bit humoristic but much helpful explanations. Pity that there are a few jumps in the process, but anyway, the man is as a Canon technician, it deserves every likes and much more.
Please post a video on how to lubricate a very noisy zoom on the SX10IS. Thanks.
@MsFoxterrier I have to take a guess, but try a few things: use the Macro focus very close on something, zoomed all the way wide, and see if it has the same blurry spot. If it appears very clean then it's probably dust or dirt inside the zoom element. If it appears blurry again, it is probably dust or dirt on the focusing element, which is near the sensor in the lens design. You would have to remove the lens from the camera, then check and clean the focus area near the sensor.
Excellent video quality, and good explanations.
Perhaps, but if you would post a video on how to take the camera apart and thus the lens barrel, one could try to re lubricate the gears if that is possible. Thanks.
Hello Pete,
Congrats on your excellent video, it was very well done, step by step with clear views and the repeated warnings.
Perhaps you can help. Your video starts after the lens was removed. I hope you can do a video, or briefly explain "how to remove the lens" from the Canon SX10is
(Mine started a "Lens Error" and the cost of professional repair is not worth it, so I would like to take a crack at it. I've read and tried non-dissassembly "home repairs" mentioned on the internet with no luck.
Very nice video, but can you make a "prequel"? I would like just to remove the lens from the body without disassembling the lens itself. Thanks!
@WeiSaiZi Sorry for delay -- yes, you'd have to replace front glass and outer barrel, which means you have to remove everything-- entire disassembly, like the video shows. Sorry for the bad news -- if you don't see any major problems with your image quality, just live with it. Good luck!
@sonyxploder This part appears to include the front mics as well as the panel. You could look for the mic components individually on the web, but I think they'll be harder to find. The trouble is that if I recall, you'll have to disassemble the whole body to get to that area of the camera. I'm certain it's doable, I just forget how.
Noisy zoom seems to be a very common complaint among other lens related issues like lens error.
But for someone not familiar with disassembling this camera a video would be great help.
PERHAPS the gears can be lubricated from the outside with out taking the lens apart. In the previous video I saw some channels, perhaps that is where the lens slides, and if you lubricate them the noise stops.
But you would know more than me, so please help. Thanks.
Hi,
I need to replace the lens barrel on my SX30IS. If I take the front of the camera off, is there a way to remove the barrel, without removing the lens from the mount? Can you post a video of how you remove the barrel on the SX20? Thank You.
I got too close to a water fountain last night and now the lens glass has droplets of water on it. The camera still works ... I don't know how. But the photos I take have a foggy look. In any case, do you think that this video can help me even if it is not about my particular camera, which is a Canon Powershot G12?
Hello Colorbroken,
Thank you for this very well made video. I've got the previous model: The Canon S5 IS. The original lens would no longer come out (rocks back and forth then error beeps), a month after a fall... I bought some used spare part lens zoom unit off ebay but after installing it (see youtube v=0cadAjag9KY ) the new second hand lens is now stuck outside. Do you know if those lens are similar? Should I venture myself in trying this out?
Thanks,
Reuben
HI Pete, great video. Unfortunately, I need the bit prior to where you've started. That is, I dropped my camera & dented the ring that surrounds the lens tube. Hence the lens will not extend from the body and I get the evil "Lens Error" message. As far as I know, there are no other issues. Any hint on how to take that off? Thanks in advance!
Hi, I have aproblem with the acrd reader on my SX20, have you got any stuff on how to dissasemble an Sx20 so that I can get to the card reader, the lens and gears are just fine - thanks
hello ! Thanks for this very interesting video !
I have a problem with my sx1 : when i take a picture with high zoom, i have a "blur point" in the picture ...
maybye something on the sensor or internal lens ? I have already cleaned external lens, without succes !
Then i'm asking myself if i have to disassemble to clean, or not...
maybye just dissasemble & clean captor first ?
I cannot found any "howto", picture or videos about SX1 disassemble !
Is it hard ? Did you have any advice ?
just a correction : it's probably not on the sensor, cause point is not always EXACTLY at the same place... probably a difference in zoom level or focus ?
if problem was something on sensor, the blur point will be each time at same place !
Thanks !
I have a sx30. The sensor has some very noticeable dust on it. Would this be an easy repair?
Hi, do you have some Service Manual or Disassembly Manual for SX20is? Or you just do all by yourself?
Hey there, nice vid. I've been looking something on powershot S5IS, it over exposing in bright daylight,
Hello, I need to remove the IR Block filter - where does it Sit in a SX1?
@tutubopeter : No. HA!
If you have a noisy lens, it's probably a gearbox issue. Without knowing why it's screaming, I can't tell you what the trouble is. Sorry!
@sonyxploder Dang links won't post: search ebay for CANON SX20 FRONT and there should be at least one panel in there someplace.
Great video. Thanks for this video and i need a help from you regarding my Powershot sx10 IS. My problem is small fungus on my lens so i went canon service center they told me cant clear the fungus because this is a single lens camera so i need to replace lens. This kind of issue possible only on Interchangeable Lens. Is it true? Please tell me what i do next. very urgent so please help me
@tutubopeter You have to disassemble the entire lens unit to lubricate anything, unfortunately. As per a number of suggestions, I'll try to work out a part 1 in the next few months.
If you have any information on this optical unit problem please post vid on it.
can u plz let me know about the lenz for powershot a470 too...
The video starts with the lens off the camera, isn't this a non removable lens? Any tips on removing it? I don't have this camera but I just got off the phone with a friend that has one with a spot on the sensor or internal lens. I'm trying to find a video that shows them how to take the lens off and clean it. Is removing the lens a simple matter?
thanks,
mk
my SX20.. While taking a pic for a huge building or a portrait for a door, the I get problem with vertical lines in the pic.. always they are not parallel the go close together in the top.. actually this problem appears clearly while shooting with 18mm position.. Is it normal for this camera or there is something wrong need to be fixed... thx in advance :)
Tony, you'll need to contact Canon USA Parts to acquire the correct replacement board for the SD card reader -- I assume you've got bad or bent pins in there, but hard to say without seeing it. If you're not comfortable taking small electronics apart, DO NOT ATTEMPT IT YOURSELF. There are lots of tiny and fragile components at work in there. Otherwise I don't remember how the machine comes apart, sorry!
@MsFoxterrier .... if it appears clean immediately, then you'll have to disassemble the lens and clean all of the elements. If you're not prepared to try this yourself, take it to a technician or to Canon! Good luck!
On my sx20is camera the plastic ring that houses the base of the lens has come loose, and now i have to be careful not to pull or hold it by that ring or it can cause a "lens error" message and then shuts off the camera, how hard would that to be to repair?
i got as sx20 after 600 pics taken lens is squeaking on the slow zoom not good after 600 pics taken can i fix it or is it a bin job .. jeff ..
Someone managed to scratch my SX-20 is lens, are there replacement lenses?
Could anyone tell me where I can buy Canon Camera Lens Parts? I have a Canon SX200IS and the zoom gear is broken. Thank you
@thelonelyfeet @John23gr Absolutely. Are you able to send me a camera so I can shoot the repair process? This video is really more for the mostly-experienced repairman, as opposed to the amateur, since this was a VERY difficult breakdown/rebuild. I could try to do a part 1 to help along... I just need a broken camera!
What size is the lens
Its about the lens error e18?
Always helping people. Too Legit... =)
i have a lenses error on my camera do you know how that goes down i need help and i don't know what to do
Really nigga'
Well, I have a question, do I need to take my lens apart since I see dust on my pictures or is it simply on a sensor? How hard is it to get to it?
I just want to change the lens
Its so stupid... i have fair sized piece of plastic lodged in the sd card slot that i cant get any other way but to open up the camera and take it out. And now i have the whole damn thing disassembled
Yeah your Right! very Frustrating and need a lot of patience 1 part missing your a Goner!
