    Hi everyone! Good news! I finally made a video showing how to reassemble your aperture if it fell apart during your shutter repair. Sorry it took so long! ruclips.net/video/djzGA-2STCM/видео.html

      soooo I wasnt super careful removing the inner lens and a small metal bracket and tiny metal ball came out. time to put it back together after cleaning and I have no clue where to put these pieces. please help

    • @AlsAutoandAppliance
      @AlsAutoandAppliance  5 лет назад

      @@gingerharper620 There should have been an equally tiny spring with that ball. If you can't find both, you can put the camera back together without them. As for the bracket, can you describe what it looked like? Was it round or sort of "L" shaped?

    • @gingerharper620
      @gingerharper620 5 лет назад

      @@AlsAutoandAppliance ok, no spring came out when the ball came out. The bracket is L shaped with one hole

    • @gingerharper620
      @gingerharper620 5 лет назад

      The bracket came out first, then when I put the two parts of the lens down the ball rolled out from somewhere.

    Sir i recently fixed my canon powershot s3is using your detailed video although aperture fix was difficult part but your video helped alot or else i would have screwed up but at the end 2 machine screws were left found no hole for them there camera works fine like a charm thanks a lot for your effort. Took me almost 7 hours because i am not a professional.

    • @AlsAutoandAppliance
      @AlsAutoandAppliance  Год назад +1

      So glad everything went well! It's certainly not for the faint of heart, but what a great feeling to know you did it all by yourself! Two screws left over is not too bad. The ones I usually miss is one that holds the shutter/zoom button panel and one that holds the front body panel from the side with the speaker. Happy shooting!

    Powershot SX20 IS PRETTY SIMILAR. Thanks, this was a big help for me to replace the entire rear screen with rotator hinge, on a Powershot SX20 IS. (it didn't like getting wet in the rainforests of New Zealand). The SX20 body is a little different, but close enough that your video showed me the way - just a few screws in slightly different places. But the left side and then back came off the same way. FOR ANYONE TACKLING REPAIRS ON AN SX20, here are a few notes. Unlike this S3 in this video, when the back came off my SX20 IS, THERE IS A RIBBON CABLE CONNECTED TO IT. I was able to leave it connected, and change out the rear screen+rotator hinge. To do so, there are 2 ribbon cables, a single wire to a small metal plate (ground wire?), and a 2-wire plug. Take a couple of photos first, to refer back to, and it'll be easy. The whole job took me about 30 min being very slow and careful.

    For some reason... I have spared a tiny spring and a tiny screw.. seem not so important...but that's my fault... I always remain with few "spare" parts that are no longer needed. :)

      So good to hear you got it working! The only two springs are the one for inside the lens barrel and the one that goes between the entire lens assembly and the metal frame of the camera. It will work just fine without either one. If the one from the lens barrel is missing, it MAY make some noise or experience rough operation.

    Great video, I was getting ready to chuck the camera in the bin and buy a new one! Had to do the job twice as I mixed the springs up and put the short one in the lenze assembly, I should have realized the ball and spring went back together too easily. Anyway all is now fine and the camera is working OK. Just for others I thought I had lost one of the springs but found it stuck to the back of the speaker, it is worth a look if anything is missing. Thanks again.

    I gathered all the courage, concentration, and steady hands I could muster... took the camera apart, and even needed to go through the daunting task of reassembling the aperture... Thanks to this video I could make it!!! Thanks a lot!
    And yet, the shutter is working, but now the images are all warped. The colors are pale and everything is jagged and blurred. Is this an image sensor issue? Might this have happened during the repair? I received the camera broken only to find the bsod. So I have no knowledge of the state of the image sensor before the repair.
    And yes... the aperture-thingies and ball flew through my room... and I had several attempts at reassembling the lens... Nonetheless, a fun journey.

If I press the shutter it clicks but there is a black screen and in the centre a small black rectangle with a white border. Is this what you refer to as the black screen of death?

    • @AlsAutoandAppliance

      Sorry about the late reply. Are you looking into the lens of the camera to see if the shutter is indeed actuating? If you see the shutter working, but you still have black pictures, then there might be a problem with the CCD. As for knowing where the parts go after being in one pile, it is from doing the same thing over and over again. I've lost track of how many cameras I've repaired with this condition. I think it is the reason my eyes are bad now, lol.

    Thank you very much for your professional video! I was able to repair my Canon S5 IS which shutter is "exploded" after 1.6 million shots as a weather cam :) Made a video about my journey with that if interested its on my channel. Oh, btw I got an oil contaminated shutter group from ebay and finally had to open up and clean as your advise :D what a fate... I assembled the camera 3 times while realized the shutter is wrong (tested with a lab power supply driving the coil, and it was not moving while the old one was moving...) Thank you

    I had exactly symptoms on my canon powershot S50, sweetest friend after my dslr, spent so many photo with him... it happen after i leave it in my room about a week without put it in it's pouch, i thought from the age and humid but after searching in internet i found that many case happen for powershot type canon because of leaking oil...
    i can't found any DIY for canon S50, many forum advising to do shake, lightly hit on the far end lens, do the long exposure while open the battery after about 7sec... i did this all already but with no luck it getting more worst... i also found DIY about disassembling S50 but just how to replace the LCD and the both board, no luck to get it's parts diagram especially how is the lens mechanical... and then i found your video....
    Well... today the S50 is finally stuck to BSOD.
    so finally i tear the S50 with hope that the lens assembly will at least similar with what you did... but ups !!! it's different and in some term i found so much difficulty, including suddenly a small spring jump out from nowhere, 3 times loosing it when trying to put it back in the body but luckily it's not jump out out of the window...
    Anyway... your video is inspirative and thanks for it... even though my viewfinder is blurry now because i fail to put alignment of the viewfinder lens assembly (to reach the blade i need to dismantle the viewfinder and the lens motor) butttt FOILAAAAA..... this is an compact camera which mostly i never use the viewfinder and now my lovely S50 works and again he able to take nice photo without getting overexposure or dark black dull image... thanks man !!!

      +13inspireme PS : i do take some picture of my DIY in the process in case i forgot the assembly when i put the thing back... and yeah i found that no oil leaking in the blade, i guess its because the humidity... can you agree for it? so i just cleaning the blade with soft cotton and put it back...
      anyway, i'm still curious with the viewfinder assembly... i can not put the lens assembly back on the right spot, can't reach the central lens on its spot when putting it back... can you suggest or giving some advise for how i can place the lens in the right position... (in inner viewfinder there are 2 lens which connected with a spring, each lens had its spot on the body lens, so when the lens zoom out/in the lens will taking effect accordingly) i can not put the lens on it's spot at the same time while attached it's housing on the main lens. tks

      +13inspireme I don't have experience on that particular model, but normally there is an arm on the lens assembly that pushes on the viewfinder movable lens, using a spring to return the viewfinder lens to its original position. If that lever is broken off (can happen during dis-assembly or accidental drop) the viewfinder won't focus any more. Does the viewfinder lens move at all anymore when zooming in and out? As for humidity, yes, this CAN cause shutter sticking issues. For this, you can actually place the camera into a bag filled with rice (uncooked, of course!) to help dry things out. Sorry I can't be of much help otherwise. :(

      +alsautoandappliance thanks for your reply.... really appreciate it... anyway... after few days the blade/aperture blade seems to stuck again, i re-disassemble and THIS TIME... i buy alcohol to clean the blade area based on your vid (wondering if some unseen oil stay there)... well finally i have succeeded repair the viewfinder also, found out that viewfinder lens only can set once i dismantle the zoom lens... now the viewfinder work like charm, it will zooming according to the focal length... buttt.... due to the cable which operate the aperture and blade are quite fragile and it soldered out through small hole on the side of the tube... i accidentally made a bit of tear on the cable side, which seems cut off some of the connection... well i still can preview my pic in the lcd, but now the cam showing error18 mode... seems time to put it on the glass cabinet.

      +13inspireme Yes, I have torn those tiny cables also. I have had some success soldering across the torn parts, but it is very tedious and will make your eyes crossed! Sounds like it's time to retire the poor camera. :(

      +Beechwoodvids The most commonly missed item during re-assembly is the incomplete insertion of the ribbon cable from the button pad into the main board and closing the cable lock. This also applies to the back button board. If the part was purchased used, it could be a bad button board. If you were getting E18 Lens Error, it's most likely the USM (ultrasonic motor). Hope you get it going!

      +LW2EQS If the shutter blades don't move, that problem will need to be addressed first. The only time I have seen aperture problems is either sand contamination, water damage, damage from prior disassembly (probably not your case if you owned since new), or poor cable connection, which can occur if the camera was ever dropped. The cable connections are easily accessible once the back cover is removed.

    Thank you - a well-photographed and clear video. I doubt I would do this task myself, but have noted bsodpowershotrepair in case I need it. However would you mind me asking you a question? I bought a second-hand S3-IS for my teenage daughter to graduate from phone photos. The tally light on the front is always dimly on, any time there are batteries inside (it flashes brighter on some on and off operations). I have seen a few people mention this online, but no-one seems to have an answer, and it’s not mentioned in the manual or in reviews. The current draw is about 0.25mA, which isn’t much but would take its toll over time. I presume it’s an electronic fault. Have you seen this in the many cameras you have fixed?

    • @AlsAutoandAppliance
      @AlsAutoandAppliance  6 лет назад +1

      John, thank you for the compliment! To answer your question, usually, when this happens, I find that the camera had been exposed to moisture (rain, dropped in water, etc) and some of the circuits, even after dry, are shorted by deposits left behind from the incident. I've had pretty good success with these situations by cleaning off the deposits with an alcohol solution and a toothbrush. If the camera was indeed exposed to moisture, there are usually tell-tale signs. Some of these include water marks in the lenses, corrosion on screws or battery terminals, water marks in the viewfinder or lcd display, or deposits on the circuitry (looks similar to battery corrosion).

    I was just wondering if it would be possible to leave the shuttle blades off of this camera instead of having to take it apart to clean it? I know I wouldn't be able to use some features and it would be over exposed, I could just turn the exposure down to compensate having no shutter blades. I don't know if it would be possible to do that or if there is a sensor on the camera that won't allow it to work without those. I know I could just try it but would see if someone else had tried it first. I am saving up to replace it with a new camera. Thanks for any help if possible.

    • @AlsAutoandAppliance
      @AlsAutoandAppliance  6 лет назад

      Wow. That is a VERY interesting question! I don't have the answer to that, but I would say that yes, you could leave them out and still have the camera attempt to take pictures, but I don't think adjusting exposure alone would be enough to make good pictures. I've had many that had the shutter blades stuck partially to fully open and the pictures always come out way overexposed. Never did try to adjust exposure, though. If you are to the point where you can remove the blades, you might as well just clean them off and be done, unless you wanted to experiment and report back to let us all know if it works! :)

      alsautoandappliance yes I know it is a interesting question, I tend to have very unique questions but that's just the way I am. I will suggest though that for people like me who have less experience perhaps than you-- a magnetic mat for all the little screws is mighty handy. The one iFixit sells has a dry-erase surface marked with sections, so you can set things in groups and label what goes where.

      So sorry this has happened. Are you talking about the dark brown clamps for the back and top button boards? Those do snap in half easily. If you are feeling lucky, you can wedge them in place (as if not broken) and that should hold then secure it with a piece of tape. If the clamp is completely disentigrated, you can try to cut a strip of plastic from packaging material like from the clear blister packages that a lot of new stuff comes in or even a milk jug. Wedge that into the slot after inserting the cable and secure with tape. Hope you are able to get your camera fixed. Please let us know how it went or comment with any other questions.

    Where can I get parts for the Canon S3IS? In working thru the fix somehow I find that missing one of the long pins. There is supposed to be 4.
    Thanks so much for these detailed fix instructions.

      Canon does sell replacement parts, but only entire assemblies. If you have a strong magnet, you can use that to try and find the missing rod if it's lost on the floor. I will look around and see if I still have spares and would be willing to send to you for the cost of shipping. Otherwise you might possibly be able to make one from welding rod or some other type of rod similar in thickness. Hobby stores usually have a good selection of carbon fiber rods that might work as well.

      alsautoandappliance thanks for your reply. I am jumping for joy as I found the missing rod. It had fallen inside the outer lens tube.

      @@juddkile8642 That is great news! Was it one of the two rods attached to the outer lens or one from the inner parts? If it's from the outer lens, it shouldn't have come out.

    Hi! nice and really detailed video. I replace my S5 IS Shutter with one new but now i got Error Obj message... i did all the steps really slow and quiet, but cant start the zoom motor. I hear some noise, like shutter wants to open, but nothing happens. The replace part says that is for "S3 IS", i think it might be not compatible (the guy says me that it will be..." can you help me? Thnks!! (Sorry about my Argentinian English)

      Sorry to hear you are having trouble. Did the replacement part consist of the entire optical unit (motor, lenses, sensor, shutter, etc) or only the part with the aperture/shutter blades? Can you show the link to the part you purchased? Many of the parts are interchangeable, BUT many are not.
