On our second day we started from Saua Apa Cupanita and went around Suru Peak, climbed Budislavu then descended to Avrig, and climbed Ciortea Ridge and Scara Peak. We ended the trek in Saua Serbotei, where we made camp.
Morning came so we started packing and we stepped out of the tent into a surreal landscape.
While we ware mesmerized by the beauty of the mist, the powerful wind blew away one of our sleeping mats.
My friend rushed to the rescue, and managed to catch just before it reached the Olt river.
We refilled on water for the long day ahead, and on we went.
Yesterday was a good day but we didn’t put in the miles we had initialy planed, so today we are faced with the task of recovering ground.
The way up this ridge is always longer than you expect. I try not to fool myself, but the moment comes when what seemed so near is still very far.
As we advance uphill towards Cocoriciu Peak, we cross paths with the blue triangle, a trail coming from Suru Chalet.
Yesterday`s friend, the sun, is covered by nimble clouds that march the sky as fast as the wind can carry them.
After an arduous climb we finally reached Saua Surului where we were supposed to camp last night. We went around Suru Peak on a narrow path neighboring on the abis, while the sun bathed clouds mystified the already absurdly beautiful scenery.
We trekked with joy until we reached Saua Budislavului. From here the trail takes us back up into the clouds towards Budislavu Peak at 2371m.
As we exited the clouds we saw a small lake who`s name is eponymus with the peak we just descended.
The rocky slopes of Ciortea ridge basked in the sunlight filling our hearts with hope of good weather, because soon we will face the most technical part of today`s trek.
We reached Saua Avrigului from where descended to Avrig Lake.
As we walked down we found ourselfs enchanted by the glacial lake that makes this valley a mountain oasis. But the closer we got to it the darker the sky grew.
Upon our arrival the mist engulfed the scenery, and all that was left ware the tumultuous waves of the lake, warning us that the weather is about to take a turn for the worst. (we forgot to refill at Avrig - some people claim that it`s not drinkable, but we have survival straws.)
From Avrig we climbed up towards the saddle of Ciortea Ridge and to my relief the marking goes around it`s jagged top. This trail is nothing less that breathtaking, and the harder it got, the harder it rained. I feel that in these moments courage and strength are nothing without prudence, because a moment of negligence can destroy everything.
After tension filled moments we made our way to the other side where another mammoth climb awaited, Scara Peak (2306 m). The adrenaline from Ciortea made us climb it, in what seemed a heartbeat.
From Saua Scara we saw Avrig Lake, that beautifuly decorated the glacial cirque.
We went a little further, but the fact that we skipped lunch started cathching up with us, so we decided to call it a day and pitch our tent in Saua Serbotei.
Today was a long and difficult trek, we ware tired and hungry, but somehow the orange hues of the sunset made us forget about our primal needs, if even for a second.
As we watch the show of light and clouds, we cannot help but wonder what marvels will unfold before us tomorrow.
