Hey everyone, thanks for the feedback and hope you've enjoyed the vid! Couple notes based on requests: I’ve added a few optional steps at the end of the written description above if you need a different background (or keyable graphic). As for the music, I pulled a sample from the Ring of Fire intro, slowed it down, played around with some reverb and a beat from SampleSwap. Wish I had a full track but I just looped out enough for the intro!

Nice! I thought to myself "luckily I don't need to do any AE tutorials since the world has Ben Marriott" but glad to be part of the conversation. Cheers Ben!
Please, please, please do more AE tutorials. I LOVE your PS stuff, but it is frankly AWESOME to see you use your skills at leading people through steps in AE as well. I think I just learned more about effects (and stacking them in less obvious ways) in AE than I've learned in the past year previous to this tutorial. Bravo and keep these coming!
You are a inspiration and a mentor for me to start learning PSD and not AE. Just to share, One more subtle details, just keyframe smoke's opacity to match with the burn. The effect is cool.
Is there a way to make the whole ember burn a transparent layer? I'm working on a sequence that needs a burn-out but on a transparent layer on top of the footage, but the black layer is covering the footage and CC Burn blackness everything.
Having watched all your amazing Photoshop tutorials I am actually not surprised how devastatingly efficient your AE game is. You are a great inspiration and gifted teacher. Thank you for all the work you put into these videos.
at 9:38 you set Darken Burn / Transition Matte layer from normal to Linear Burn which reveals the white text/black background ,,, that doesnt happen for me and I am following step by step ... instead for me it shows a white background with the CC Burn and effects added to transition matte
EDIT - FIXED! I was working in 32 bpc but this needs to be 16 bpc. I will leave my original comment below in case it helps anyone else. Original comment - This looks amazing but I am getting different results to you at the burnt edge section. My box blur seems to simplify the fractal edges and produces a hard, high contrast edge, rather than looking blurred and my levels histogram has no data in it. Using Linear Burn on the layer does not linear burn - I can still see the "darken burn / transition matte" layer and not the burn objects layer as expected. I've run through the tutorial to this point twice and the only difference I see is I am on Windows and using AE 2021 (v18.4.1). Could you possibly tell me the version you are using so I can install and see if that is the problem?
I am also having the same problem, after changed blending mode to linear burn, nothing is changed. and I am working on 16 bpc still having the problem.
I love how you making your effects staying responsive for later usage or changing something without repeating the whole process. I also like how you understanding effects working together are react. Old school tricks i noticed and introducing your own in the mix making it pure gold. Respect for your experience. Waiting for next one. Show us more you came up with :)
Was looking for a fire effect to add to my crappy little tiktok video lmao. Found this. Having no experience with After Effects, I thought yeah let's give it a try. It took me hours, but I DID IT and it looks AMAZING. "You probably don't need explanation for the fade in" made me LOL bc I did, ofc. Anyway - this tutorial is clearly phenomenal if I was able to get through it with zero experience. Excited to watch more!
This is such a good tutorial, made me go back to 2007ish when AE didn't had so many external plugins and the tutorials used mostly built in tools and plugins, great work and very useful, I learnt a couple of ways to do some things I haven't thought about, and I've used AE for almost 17 years!
Is there also an option to make it go to a transparent background? For instance at the end you showed it with a picture. That would be so cool to have it as a transition from 1 picture to another.
That is MOST important feature this project needs! I am trying to mess with layers to make it transparent and use with other layers but I am to naive with this software to figure it out! T_T
Hi, what an amazing effect, wanted to confirm if I could use this effect to add lyrics to a video, not on a black background but to an actual video, that would requiere to pretty much render the burn effect to a transparent background, do you think that would be possible? Thanks in advance
Been working in AE for only about two years now and nobody told me about Solid Composite or Set Matte before. I used to have to precompose so many different solids and duplicate so many layers to get the effects I wanted. Thanks for showing those tricks so I can keep my comps so much smaller. This is gonna save me, fr. 😭
Beautiful, thank you! I just want to know what to do about the pixels at the edge of the comp on the first adjustment layer above the displacement reference. I have wiggly lines all around the edge.
When I apply the fast box blur to the darken burn / transition matte layer, the fast box blur just sharpens the edges of the transition and shows no blur, can anyone help?
Is the project file available? I'm a supporter too but still can't find it even if i click the "lock" thing on the site. Great tutorial btw! ^^ PS: nvm i found it :))
Not only the effect is awesome, but the effortless narration and overall teaching style makes videos on this channel outstanding. No stupid intros, no facecam, no shit. I've watched almost entire Ae playlist and it's crazy that this channel has so few subscribers. I also wonder how you come up with this techniques. Please keep it going!
Sir, is there anything you can't do? 😮 Thanks for another superb tutorial. After all your videos I always have the same thought, how this guy comes up with such great effects and made it look so easy to do. Thanks for sharing your knowledge!
Wow. you did EVERYTHING to make this accessible and easy to follow and learn. The Video, the markers, the description is a textual walkthrough. Well done

Gut your teachingstyle and your techniques are really awaome! I'm more of a Aftereffects Guy so seeing an Aftereffects Tutorial from you is just Like Christmas 😄 I would Love to See more ❤️
I don't do much in After Effects lately but it's nice to know I can pull this effect off without too much trouble. Plus I love fire 🔥🔥🔥. All these tutorials are top notch. Keep em comin'! EDIT: Grats on 100k subs. Well deserved!
It's funny you've mentioned Andrew Kramer, because I find you approach to FX and to educational narration very very similar to his :). And I just LOVE IT! You simply can't imagine how I am gratefull for your mature, intelligent , informative and COMPETENT approach. It hits me on another level - not only in terms of new knowledge about how to use those tools in my work, but also in terms of "holding the bastion of competence" :) in the world filled with mediocrity and lazyness. THANK YOU!
Is there a way to make this transition to another scene, instead of just having it transition to black? I've tried placing the comp I want to reveal at the bottom of the main comp, but it gets affected by the displacement map, as well as the darker burn comp.
I just tried this and it seems to work pretty well, drop your scene that you want to transition from into the type layer comp now take that main comp and precomp it, I called this comp "BurnMe" Now make a duplicate of that precomp in the Project and call this BurnMe_Matte, and in this precomp fill the layer with the outgoing scene with white, I also had to turn off the burnt edges to keep the more crisp burnt edges, bring this precomp into your final comp and in the "BurnMe" precomp, set matte using the "BurnMe_Matte" comp's luminance as the Alpha, drop scene 2 to the bottom of the stack. Boom, scene 1 burns away to reveal scene two. Let me know if that makes sense.
I somehow made it to the end of the tutorial, have a new found respect for vfx artists, and need to celebrate that my AE only crashed once🤣🤣. Such an awesome technical video.
Your Ps. tutorials are all amazing and now your first one on After Effects makes me even more excited for your future uploads! Learned so much from this video alone! Thank you so much for sharing your experience! :)
Ah thanks, yup all about the expressions! That's funny, I remember thinking to myself "I'm either pronouncing this word wrong... or something doesn't sound right"... Aliasing!
I just subscribed to your patreon, for a year! I downloaded the project file for a closer look and I was wondering, how would you do this entire effect with an alpha channel? It looks amazing on black, but turning off the background in the main comp reveals that it really only works on black, not on transparent. Any tips would be greatly appreciated as I'd like to overlay this on footage. THANK YOU!
@@IMLono Thanks! I was using the effect on moving characters w/alpha, so I rendered out some passes, 1. Full render, 2. smoke and embers, 3. alpha matte, and comped those passes with some screen mode here and some unmult there. Turned out even better than expected!
Awesome. What a great, useful and well-structured tutorial! It's been a long time since I've seen something so effective and comprehensible. Thanks a lot for this! 👍😊
I really enjoyed watching and trying this tutorial! Thanks so much. But I have a question, how can we change the background on this comp? The Linear Burn layer causes problems with anything other than a black background.
Awesome, ya some of the Photoshop ones I've thought to myself "this would be so much more useful in After Effects"... gonna have to look back and refresh my memory

The way you are using Alpha Matte to generate effects is absolutely incredible! Thank you so much for showing me the different style of working with After Effects.

Amazing tutorial! Thank you so much! But, how can i make the animation without Black Background just Transparent Background? So just a Burning Object and i can place the animation into any background. When i hide the black background, the burning object doesn't disappear, it turn into black. Even when i hide the Solid Composite FX it doesn't work either. How can i make that
I’m a year late, but this is the single greatest tutorial I’ve watched on any subject since I logged onto the internet for the first time way back in the 90s. Not only is the end result stunning, you explained why you were doing every step and even showed why you aren’t doing other alternatives. Just brilliant all around.
This is my first time commenting on RUclips in 11 years. Your fx chains processes are phenomenal. You make the most inspiring tutorials on RUclips. Thank you
You have an insanely deep understanding of the tools of Photoshop! Your videos are mind-blowning. I know you hear it in all your comment sections, but it still needs to be said!
I was already extremely happy with the new and original insights in Photoshop, I learn new things, even after 25 years of using it. After Effects is surely another love of mine, with a less years under the belt, so the excitement is even bigger now you are doing this kind of tutorials as well! Your way of thinking in sustainable and repeatable methods is very much how I approach things (thanks to years of working for clients) and this effect is really cool, but more important is seeing you use effects that I might have seen existing in the menus for years, but never knew for what they could be used. This expands the tool box in using the software, and opens inspiration. Thanks for this! You are a great tutor.
IDK, went through each step, following the original process, but in the end, after applying the Displacement map to an Adjustment layer - the edges of my video are deforming inward, showing white space. I have checked every effect, every option, and checkbox...dunno WTF...
Not transition. Requires this black background that cannot be replaced. That requires some polishing for the transition to use as .mov with alpha channels. Darken Burn layer, Fire Edge, Embers and Smoke. Use Color Range on them set Color Space on YUV and set Fuzziness Embers: 20 Smoke: 100 Fire Edge: 20 Darken Burn: 100. In Embers change Contrast to 300 and Brightness to -80 in the first Fractal Noise. That will lower the quality bcos all of that is not so visible without black backgroundI think but don't know how to do that better xD
Hello, I have a question, is this tutorial usable without a black background? because I have problems if I don't leave the black background. thank you for your answer
I love this tutorial but, for some reason, when turning the Linear Burn blending mode ON on the Darken Burn layer it doesn't do what it shows in the tutorial. Any ideas? I'd really like to use this effect on a promo reel , but without that effect it feels like something is lacking. I've followed the video step by step and keep getting the same results. All help is appreciated!
My version of After Effects (CS6) doesn't have the "Source" option for the displacement map, so I can't do this as nicely. :( That distortion is what makes this work so well, I think.

The way you are using Alpha Matte to generate effects is absolutely incredible! Thank you so much for showing me the different style of working with After Effects.
Errors
After Effects error: zero denominator converting ratio denominators. (17 :: 18)
Cached Preview Needs 2 or More Frames to Playback
Maybe this will help you with these errors:
Go to Embers and Smoke
CC Wide Time --->Native Motion Blur (change it to ON)

Amazing tutorial! Thank you so much!
But, how can i make the animation without Black Background just Transparent Background? So just a Burning Object and i can place the animation into any background. When i hide the black background, the burning object doesn't disappear, it turn into black. Even when i hide the Solid Composite FX it doesn't work either.
How can i make that
Wanted to do this for my new edit but ighh guess were not doing it🔥
Same energy 😂
This is INCREDIBLE!!! I'm going to finally dive into AF this weekend with this. Really great job and wicked effect! Thank you!
Oh man, this was EXACTLY what i looked for. Many thanks for this perfect tutorial.
BR Five-Birds
my gpu is crying a lot
Nice! One of the best tutorials I've followed in years of fiddling with AE. Thank you for your contributions! 👍
You're on fire (hehe) with these tutorials.
Nice! My cousin Tyler usually gets in the first pun in the comments, he must be busy today
@@Texturelabs No, you fired him ... ^^
I wish we could do this effect with a transparent background so we could apply it to our projects
just dont put the solid composition thing or put a solid black/green layer under the burning effect
@@buster2134 oh ok ty ty
IDK, went through each step, following the original process, but in the end, after applying the Displacement map to an Adjustment layer - the edges of my video are deforming inward, showing white space. I have checked every effect, every option, and checkbox...dunno WTF...
Excellent sir...Thanks for giving the project map...I will try at my level
Awesome Tutorial. Is there a way i can have the text on top of some footage, without the black background?
5% seems to be the perfect amount of Noise every time!
Second that! I've got about 5% ambient noise in my brain at all times
Hello,
I have a question, is this tutorial usable without a black background?
because I have problems if I don't leave the black background.
thank you for your answer
I love this tutorial but, for some reason, when turning the Linear Burn blending mode ON on the Darken Burn layer it doesn't do what it shows in the tutorial. Any ideas?
I'd really like to use this effect on a promo reel , but without that effect it feels like something is lacking. I've followed the video step by step and keep getting the same results. All help is appreciated!
Ooooooh. After Effects! More please... :)
Ah cool, glad to read that... starting a little ideas folder here
Hey guys, at 9:40 I don't know why when I click on linearn burn, it stays the same white, it doesn't go to black. PLEASE HELP!
Awsome,Im blown away....How did you learn things like this? maybe an advice someone...thx
My version of After Effects (CS6) doesn't have the "Source" option for the displacement map, so I can't do this as nicely. :( That distortion is what makes this work so well, I think.
