Stop it. I cannot give this enough thumbs up. I love the raw and deep-in-the-mud approach of this by for one, only using stock available effects. Interesting that the developers provided the very features to get pretty much anything accomplished.
You are rare on RUclips, someone who doesn't condescend to beginners, but doesn't dumb down for more advanced users. You just tell it like it is, and give everyone every step. It is always a pleasure to get your notifications, because your skills are so varied, and you always show such different content every time. Thanks for taking the time to give the rest of us a look into how to make everything much more professional and much more stylistic than we could do without your help. Please keep up the videos, they are all gems, sir!
Brady is a visual design monster! What a treasure of a human. This particular tutorial brings me back to Andrew Kramer's Video Copilot days. Yes, I am that old 🥺
You make the best videos on these programs hands down. I don’t even use After Effects and I feel like I come away having learned something cool and useful about both visual art and historic filmography.
The way you have a super on the right showing off all the effects that are going into the layer, expressions, and settings is PERFECT! So many tutorials I just want to see what went into the step instead of scrubbing to find the exact spot, so so helpful!
This is an incredible resource! Having this toolkit that I can actually adjust will be forever more valuable that finding more and more stock clips of grain, leaks, and damage. Thank you!
Excellent tutorial, as always. Just one point to note, that artefacts on the negative such as scratches and dust are reversed to black on the print, whereas artefacts on the final print will remain white. It's worth having two sets of effects for both negative and print artefacts. One assumes that old prints were damaged during filming, and then again when the film has been mishandled since.
Your presentation is impeccable-- As someone who dislikes video tutorials (but often learns more easily from them), the decision to include clear instructions on the side is perfect for me. I can easily follow along at my own pace, while also checking to make sure I did everything right/have an easy way to find my way out if I get stuck! Not to mention that the actual style (font and design wise) is very pleasing.
I can't really understate how fantastic and versatile your tutorials are, easily among the highest quality on the internet. I fully appreciate that this video, while uploaded today, is going to be helping and inspiring a generation of artists 1, 5, 10 years down the line too. You're the best, Brady!
I can't thank you enough. This is so detailed and smart, elegant . . . you've really studied the way natural media look, hugely impressive. Not just the specifics of the solution, but the way you approach the solution.
Your tutorials were always above everyone elses but that sidebar just listing all the effects and changes you've made is an absolute game changer, especially whenever I wanna come back to this video just to grab some setting values!
it continuously impresses me how much value is in the videos you release, and it's all for free. You demistify the creation proccess of things that I could not wrap my brain around for years, and it ends up being so simple and easy
What a succinct, soothing, amazing tutorial with an incredible workflow (that seems somehow straight out of my brain). Fantastic results. Thank you for taking the time and sharing this with us.
Dude!! This is SO good. It’s like you read my mind - all the cool looks and effects that I’m into. I know there are ways to do this stuff without a plugin, but you’re the first to demystify this process in a clear and repeatable way. Thanks so much!
This is just insane AE veteran of 15+ years and have had many, many attempts at making this sort of effect. Some more successful than others and then delving into the odd plug-in, but this is sensational
Absolutely fantastic tutorial of a very convincing effect. Love your tutorials. Always clear, concise, and thorough. You have a way of quickly explaining not just how but why each step is done. Thank you.
Funny enough I was looking for a tutorial as we speak for something just like this for a music video I am going to be making and then I get a notification that Texture Labs uploaded. Great timing!
A lot of old/historical footage have this sped-up look (happens when you're playing 18FPS video at 24FPS) so it's a good idea to speed up the comp (about 133,33%) to replicate this effect. The tutorial is awesome! Thank you so much for sharing your experience!
Super awesome stack and so cool to achieve this without any plugins. I will just add that I’d probably dial down the unsharp mask effect (or leave it off) which looks more like video tape than film to my eye, but that’s just personal preference.
thank you for putting all the work in it and pushing ps & ae to their limits. quick addition to the video: 5:50 i think the blurriness is 6 for the 4k version isn't it? edit: 6:40 same here, i think the scale of the fractal noise is 100 for 4k whenever it is about a size you need to double the value of the fhd version.
I swear I thought the intro footage was real vintage! It's only the clothing on the people that gave it away! This is awesome , I do hope to see you switch to DaVinci Resolve and fusion!
Always incredible tips and tricks especially the expression of the gate weave with the octave ! To achieve the oldest footage looks maybe we can add the posterize effect with a low frame rate. Thank you very much Brady ❤
Super sweet! Since it's very heavy for preview, I wonder if creating a Proxy out of Scratches+Blobs+Damage+Dust (Most of the Solid layers) - would make preview runs faster without taking away from the effect.
I honestly have no desire to edit at this level, but your method of presentation is phenomenal, and I absolutely love watching your videos and gaping in awe at the effects you're able to achieve! Truly one of the best hidden gem channels on RUclips!
Ha great question! I pulled sound and music from the Prelinger Archives here: archive.org/details/prelinger Filtered to look at anything 1940's to 80's. It's a great place to look for funky graphics references as well. Music *should* be public domain too (let's hope). There's a skateboard safety one with the most amazing tune.
This is fantastic ! thank you so much. Quick question, did you change the frame rate of the original footage ? Because the original seems super fluid but after your treatment it is way more 'analog'. cheers Brady !
My favourite RUclips notification!

Right on, thanks Sergio!

All about the fractal noise - almost 20 years old in the program but I still probably use it more than anything!

Love hearing that, thank you!
I love that although the tutorial was demonstrated using after effects, I can see myself applying these methods using other compositing softwares

And this has made my entire season, especially as I'll be doing post production on a horror short this autumn. Thank you so much, sir!!!
Excellent tutorial, as always.

That's really nice of you to say, thanks Luke!
I can't thank you enough. This is so detailed and smart, elegant . . . you've really studied the way natural media look, hugely impressive. Not just the specifics of the solution, but the way you approach the solution.
Amazing. Never seen a tutorial with the written settings, which is so convenient for taking notes. Thx so much

One of the best After Effects tutorials (actually, there are 5 or more tutorials in this one) I've ever watched. Thank you!
This is probably the most realistic retro film effect I've seen. Easily beats retro effects done on music videos etc.
This is just insane
AE veteran of 15+ years and have had many, many attempts at making this sort of effect. Some more successful than others and then delving into the odd plug-in, but this is sensational
The only film effect I’ll ever need! Not just an effect, but a film effect toolkit Thank you 🙏
Your textures are still the best and I can't thank you enough! Great content as always
Yup!very few people create such good tutorials! this one feels so good to watch and exciting to learn!
Brady, You’re absolute legend! Learning from You is a pure pleasure. Thank You.
Absolutely fantastic tutorial of a very convincing effect. Love your tutorials. Always clear, concise, and thorough. You have a way of quickly explaining not just how but why each step is done.
Thank you.
Amazing results and such a simple tutorial to follow. This is the internet at it's absolute best. Thanks so much.
This is again just beyond awesome. Exactly what I'm searching for. So much love, easy to grasp as always and top quality. Thanks Brady!
Some other tutorials were a bit too basic, thanks so much for this truly 'detailed' tutorial, worked great for me!
Funny enough I was looking for a tutorial as we speak for something just like this for a music video I am going to be making and then I get a notification that Texture Labs uploaded.
Great timing!
Nice, that happens every once in a while, always glad to hear it!
Nothing much left to say except "thank you" again! Went through and built this in AE - works perfectly and looks awesome, as expected.

Great Tutorial. Keep up the great work
This may be the 60th time I've said, Oh, THIS Texturelabs tutorial is my favorite one now!
Genuine bummer that I stopped using Adobe products. I loved following along with these tutorials and playing with the workflow. Alas. Best of luck!
Dude you might have the best After Effects videos I've seen with stuff I actually want and need for my projects. THANK YOU.
Very clever (as usual) Maven Ericson and very well explained (as usual). Thanks a ton!
Great stuff as usual Brady!
Easily my favorite AE tutorial of the year 🙌
The settings on the side is a great addition to your videos. Nice work
The goat!!!!!!!!! he's back to bless us with more free knowledge. Awesome tutorial as always!
This is probably my favorite youtube channel of all time
Super awesome stack and so cool to achieve this without any plugins.
I will just add that I’d probably dial down the unsharp mask effect (or leave it off) which looks more like video tape than film to my eye, but that’s just personal preference.
You are the man. One million thumbs up. THANK YOU for being so generous with your wisdom
I love this Andrew Kramer guy! Thanks for your amazing tutorials!
@@DiVoidationStudio 😂😂😂😂😂
And upon watching a Kramer tutorial, kudos to a Brady guy!
Hands down the ultimate tutorial for analog film!
I'm gonna be coming to this tutorial soooo often. This was awesome

This is f'ing nuts. I can't believe how good that looks.
Excellent tutorial! Thank you so much… I’m working on a project right now where this will be perfect for it.
thank you for putting all the work in it and pushing ps & ae to their limits.

Beauty 👏🏻
You could ultimately use a slider controler for some values on a control layer
Thx RUclips Algorithm for this video recommendation, this is pure gold! Definitely gonna try it.
Thanks for the right part with all the info!
Absolutely brilliant.
Thank you so much for video! Very useful info!
I like grunge style I would like to see more videos on this topic🤗
You are a gem! Happiness comes with a notification :)
Thanks for keeping us all thinking and experimenting. Inspiring!

Thank you so much! You are absolutely genius!
Best channel on youtube
WOW that looks awesome
You've done it again, thanks Brady.
Just watching this give us the feeling that we are smarter than before.
At this point I believe brady can finish a whole feature film with using fractal noise. Great work as always!
So fun learning from you!
Thank you!
I honestly have no desire to edit at this level, but your method of presentation is phenomenal, and I absolutely love watching your videos and gaping in awe at the effects you're able to achieve! Truly one of the best hidden gem channels on RUclips!
So good! I love the little details and extra's, good to know!
Just Thank you sir !
My only question is where did you source the music! It’s perfect for this effect
Ha great question! I pulled sound and music from the Prelinger Archives here: archive.org/details/prelinger

Wonderful tutorial. To the point and very effective. Andrew Kramer level honestly.
Love this Brady. Can we get one for that vintage TV look?
Unreal. Thank you for sharing!
This tut was bay far one of the best and useful one! can you please let know what would be the parameters for instagram reels and not hd ratio?
This was fantastic and easy to follow…thanks!
greatest tutorial ever. thank you very much
This is awesome! Could you tell me what typefaces were used for the main scene?
Best in the biz!
this was a really well explained tut.
Thank you very much. Truly useful. Pure knowlegment.
With the "Posterize Time" effect it would give more realism to the movement of the scenes!
Was the frame rate changed for the final look? Sorry, i might have missed that part. Great vid!
Ben Mariott is drooling rn
This is fantastic ! thank you so much. Quick question, did you change the frame rate of the original footage ? Because the original seems super fluid but after your treatment it is way more 'analog'. cheers Brady !
OMG this real editing and restoring old videos/films.
Tks for sharing fabulous job and tips.
Awesome tutorial, thanks!! ❤
Amazing!
