Some viewers might find the old pictures upsetting. The reputation of human nature and our history is unfortunate. Our predecessors were forced to capture images of war, torture, or bad events in order to commemorate certain events.

That Halifax explosion in 1917 killed around 1700 people and injured about 9000 others

I read a great book about it. Lot of heroes that day.

1:20 After finding this image in a high resolution format I was amazed to see the details. Center left, going up the road, that section sticking out into the street appears to be a corner island surrounded by a fence with some kind of picture signs leaning against it, and a man looking at them. Across the street, the building on the corner with the windows nearly facing us head on has a sign naming it "The Josephine." Just to the right of that is a bright building with six windows facing the street. Below the 3rd and 4th window is a sign that reads "New Atlanta." Below the canopy are two businesses with signs that read "Bradfield Bros. Groceries and Feed" on the left and "The Junction Bakery" on the right. Just to the left of the Bradfield Bros. sign is a street sign, and ALMOST legible, but not quite. It would have been a nice way to ID the location. Finally, the trolley at the nearly dead center from left to right has a sign on the back that says "??????" PARK. Again, not quite enough resolution to read completely.
Many thanks to THE TIME THEN for these fantastic images into our past. I have sort of made it a hobby to see if I can locate the same places or identify some unknowns.

5:10 Amazing to find a photo of a trial in progress in a courtroom! Perhaps someone snuck a camera inside, although highly unlikely due to the size of glass plate cameras. I'm guessing Canadian laws regarding cameras in court hadn't been established yet since as photography was still growing.
