  • RECONNECTING THE WEST TO ITS ROOTS: CULTURAL CHRISTIANITY | PART 2
In this lecture, Dr. Vishal Mangalwadi discusses the concept of cultural Christianity and its significance within Western civilization. Mangalwadi describes Western civilization as a beautiful flower that has been cut off from its roots-those roots being the Christian faith-resulting in the cultural elements of Christianity beginning to wither and fade.
He argues that many people, including public intellectuals, recognize the value of the cultural fruits of Christianity, such as ethical principles, art, and community traditions. However, he notes a growing concern about how to reconnect Western civilization to its spiritual and intellectual foundations to prevent further decline.
The discussion mainly touches on the idea of "Cultural Christianity," where individuals may identify with Christian culture-appreciating hymns, Christmas carols, and the broader Christian ethos-without necessarily adhering to religious beliefs or practices. Mangalwadi highlights the perspective of Richard Dawkins, a well-known atheist, who has recently described himself as a "cultural Christian." Dawkins acknowledges that, despite his atheism, he prefers the ethical and cultural framework provided by Christian principles over alternatives.
Through this lecture, Mangalwadi aims to shed light on the importance of reconnecting Western civilization with its Christian roots, arguing that the spiritual and intellectual foundation of Christianity is crucial for preserving the cultural integrity and moral framework of the West. He invites viewers to reflect on the role of Christianity in shaping Western civilization and the potential consequences of losing touch with its foundational values.

Excellent and very timely presentation. Vishal is a beacon for truth against the many "Shepherds for Sale" documented in Megan Basham's new bombshell book.

Very good historical presentation of philosophical and theological shifts in the West. Vishal fills in some of the holes that Francis Schaeffer did not address in his overview of Western history and the church. Hopefully this is going to lead to the production of another book contrasting the battle of ideas for the West in our churches, universities and seminaries.

Deeply enlightening. I’m glad to discover Vishal. The biblical origin of western civilisation as linked to John Knox and the Scottish Reformation is a fascinating one, especially the debunking of Durant’s thesis that ascribe it to Greece. I live in Scotland and it’s curious to me how much most of the locals don’t quite understand the depth of how their countryman moved mountains. I’ve pilgrimaged to the John Knox status at the Glasgow necropolis where it imposes itself high as though alive among the surrounding tombs.
This talk piques my interest and would be a necessary backdrop when I revisit my curiosities about John Knox.
Durant’s The Reformation sits in my library. I’m waiting to collect the remaining books before diving into them. If he’s centrally responsible for the surviving Greek myth, that’s one heck of a successful myth-making enterprise. (I would suspect that Kenneth Clark’s BBC series, “Civilisation” did more to plant the seed of this origin).
That said, I’m convinced that the cultural Christian revival has become necessary because the current disgruntlement, cultural chaos, and the nihilism fuelled by our sophisticated technologies - all without any redeeming value as to how best to orient the individual or organise our communities, make for a reminder and cries to find the very root and tradition that once sustained goodness, truth and beauty. That’s what the clamour is about and that’s what Peterson, Dawkins, Musk, Ayaan Ali are nostalgic about, and hopefully able to revive and sustain.
(Dear Vishal, you should have a conversation with Dr Iain McGilchrist and Prof John Lennox. I think we would be blessed).

Excellent topic, but the audio is very poor! Can organisers try to increase the audio and present this rich christian scholarship?
