    When I smoke my hides I use a square type grill dismantle the whole thing drill about 20 holes in the bottom and set it over the fire. Makes a lot of smoke and lasts a long time without having to add more punk.

    Do you have any tips for highland cow hides? I just got one and it’s my first cow hide, talk about jumping in feet first… until now I’ve done sheep hide.

    • @thomasjelpel
      @thomasjelpel  2 года назад

      Thinning the hide is everything. Shave the hide thin enough to optimize brain penetration, and you should be doing good!

    • @tashspond
      @tashspond 2 года назад +1

      @@thomasjelpel I'm actually doing alum and salt tanning. I get my skins from a neighbor who is a part time butcher and until now have been doing sheep skins. I'm assuming alum will work for a cow skin as it does a sheep skin. It's going pretty good so far although it's been super hard to clean the fur. This animal is pure white and the shaggy fur makes the skin beneath the hair a nightmare to clean. There grime must be engrown into the outer flesh. Is there a way to bleach a white cow hide? Or should I just go at it with a pressure washer and a scrub brush? Seems alot of work for something that is being sold for less than 300 on etsy. Am I crazy, or is that super low?!?!

    • @thomasjelpel
      @thomasjelpel  2 года назад

      @@tashspond Candy - I don't know anything about alum tanning... or bleaching hides. A braintanned hide would sell for $1,000+, and it would be difficult to justify the labor at that. $300 sounds like giving it away. Good luck!

    • @tashspond
      @tashspond 2 года назад +1

      @@thomasjelpel that’s exactly what I said to the Etsy seller. If you search cow hides on Etsy, you will see what I mean. I sent them a message saying that there is NO WAY their hides are hand tanned as they claim unless they are using slaves.

    Do you salt the bison hide first?

    • @thomasjelpel
      @thomasjelpel  6 лет назад +1

      Yes, the hides were salted soon after skinning to preserve them until tanning.

    • @riverrainflintknappingart5288
      @riverrainflintknappingart5288 6 лет назад +1

      Do you have to salt the hide to lock in the hair or could you carry on with the the steps shown here the same day of skinning as long as you can get to it right away but without salting?

    • @thomasjelpel
      @thomasjelpel  6 лет назад +1

      No need to salt it if you can go straight into the tanning. :)

      Lastly, how do you prep the brains, how much water to brains, how long do you "cook" the solution? Also heard of folks using neats foot oil in addition to brains, what do you think? I'm picking up a bison hide next week from a local ranch, about to give it a whirl, thank you for your help!

    • @thomasjelpel
      @thomasjelpel  6 лет назад +1
