www.v8speedsho... - Metal Working Tips: Custom Firewall with Bead Roller and Pullmax 1979 Trans Am V8TV
In today's episode, we're in the fab shop at V8 Speed and Resto fabricating a custom firewall for a 1979 Pontiac Trans Am. The goal is to address rust issues, fix previous damage, and enhance the overall appearance under the hood.
The original floorboard replacement didn't extend high enough to fully cover the rust, and the factory stamping had some unappealing imperfections. We decided to cut out the affected area and create a more visually appealing piece that complements the car's aesthetics without altering the entire undercarriage.
    Key Points:
Material selection: 20-gauge sheet steel for its strength and workability
Step roll pattern: Adds strength, creates a visual break, and enhances the industrial look
Bead rolling technique: Using the Mittler Brothers bead roller to create a custom pattern
Panel preparation: Pre-stretching the metal to prevent distortion during bead rolling
Electric bead roller: Variable speed and forward/reverse operation for precise control
Corner shaping: Addressing shrinking and stretching around the pattern corners
Edge rounding: Using a Pullmax with radius dies for a smooth transition to adjacent panels
Panel installation: Utilizing magnets for flush fitment and clamps for secure attachment
Welding: Tack welding, seam welding, and grinding for a seamless finish
    Additional Notes:
Rust prevention: Applying rust-resistant primer and paint to protect the new firewall
Wiring and hoses: Accommodating future wiring and hoses without compromising the visual appeal
Overall design: Maintaining a cohesive look with the rest of the under-hood components
This custom firewall project demonstrates the importance of careful planning, precise fabrication techniques, and attention to detail when restoring classic vehicles. By addressing rust issues, enhancing the appearance, and ensuring compatibility with future modifications, we're contributing to the preservation and enjoyment of this iconic Trans Am.

John Moss, I loved this video and your work. Many other vids waste time on the un-important and then short-change on the important. Yours is the reverse and slows down and magnifies the important stuff - well done. From here in the UK, it's quaint to to hear a young guy like you give us "...3/32"..."! On a more practical level, it might be useful to add to all your good information that, if the joggle you're looking to add is more visual than structural, little more that the metal thickness can give the effect you're looking for.

What upper and lower dies where you using? I am also trying to replicate that same style joggle. I noticed the top was a tipping die but what about the lower?

So is this build's objective to look like a factory produced (modern) trans-am, or is it a restomod?
