I learned to weld in 1973, and have been welding ever since, this is some of the finest welding I've ever seen, the sheet metal work is top shelf, just doesn't get any better. I got handed a torch and some coathanger wire, and told "to make it look like this", and sent to work. You give excellent tips on getting through the most difficult issues, and show it done perfectly. Thanks!
I've been a fabricator for many years but only recently did I ever attempt any bodywork. I've picked up a few tips and my project is taking shape. I am just amazed at your level of craftsmanship. Thanks for doing what you do to keep me inspired and motivated to complete my current project.
Karl your detailed work and explanation is first class my friend. You would make a great trade school teacher. Your passion shines through in all that you do. Inspiring an old bloke to get off my backside and give this a try on a project car down here in Australia. That A model looks wicked.
It is fun to watch you work. I know that metal is just another medium and can be welded, formed, hammered, sanded, etc... but you are a true craftsman/artist. You have a gift and you really enjoy/are enthusiastic about what you do. Thank you for sharing and keep on keepin' on.

I just watched the last half of this again. Thanks for the TIG .035 filler wire tip. I’ve only TIG welded sheet aluminum, not steel yet, but will be trying this out on my Blazer.
Unconventional metal do use of mid wire as filler metal in the process has been around for quite a while it's just not that well-known I guess you could say but it is more beneficial to use McGuire because the diameter of of the mixtile wire is smaller maybe less of a will build to have to grind down the height and the toy of the well perhaps there was a book written about this his name Ron Fournier you can find Old Street rodder magazines from the 1980s 90s late 2000 it covers some of this metal shaping detail even better
Man i love how that floor / firewall came out. I was planning on just put the floor section from another car in my project car, but i love how that floor came out. You have incredible skill. Crazy awesome stuff Karl 🤘
ok so i've saved up for a tig finally , In doing a fire wall is there much shrinkage when you bead roll a panel would you allow extra material and trim away or cut to size ... i don't have alot of space like you had.. it's for a 66 Beetle. look forward to hearing from you, cheers
How is it possible that the panel of the firewall remains flat when you have not pre-stretched it before creating the border ? So great job as always and thank you for your pedagogy and your passion
I think it’s a combination between the thickness of the material 16 gauge and the small step. My guess is that it was easier for the material to stretch where the bead roller was then to put that much attention into the 16 gauge
Could you do a video on the x brace @ 0:01 i understand how you got the dimple dies but was curious on the flanges and the shaping towards the end of the xs, was this one piece or sectioned and did you use shrinker/stretcher. Love your channel btw!!!!
This is a really great idea for a video and in fact hammer forming was going to be my next tutorial how to video so it will happen sooner than you think! Stay tuned cheers!
Was going t I was going to say you could use mig wire as a usable substitute for the tig wire but a good thing to use McGuire 40 this cuz the mig wire diameter is a little bit smaller lot of hot rod builders back-in-the-day used a lot of mig wire for their to use that for team process I think the bead would be a little smaller where you wouldn't have to grind down your your weld wellfield that I'm in they call it Bluff in the world
this answered a question I asked on the video of you doing the panels with the diamond pattern and the scales. When I was watching you do this firewall panel, I was wondering if you ever feel like you are playing Pac-man lol
Excellent tradesman. Well done. Do you have plans for your bead roller? I’m from South Africa and refurbish old British cars as a hobby. I send the body out for repair and painting but would like to start doing the bodywork myself.
Hey Desmond! I don’t actually have drawings for this one I sort of built it on the fly. But a lot of people like yourself have been asking about the roller and I will build one in the future and make the drawings available
When you bead rolled the firewall did you prestrech it? I'm fixing to do a 36 chevy truck firewall and want it flat as possible after bead rolling. Any tips?
I don't know if you will see this comment. But I have a question: Before bead rolling the panel. Do you run it through say an English Wheel to stretch the metal first so it does not warp? Thanks, have really enjoyed your videos so far, and you have given me a few new ideas for my own project. Bart
Hey Bart! I try and read every comment an answer as many as I can. The bed rolling on this was not pre-stretched but in some cases I do pre-stretch when I would like to have a deeper bead or step. The English will those work great for this or a punishing hammer
Excellent high quality work and professional approach a real pleasure to watch. One question please. What is the make of your radius gage & where can I buy it. Thanks for making such great videos.
Karl ... just awesome, I've seen your video on the van where you used a mig for sheet metal would you do a fire wall like you've done in this one with a mig??? that's all I have so just wondering your thoughts please cheers
Could this be welded using a mig? Also the piece that was already attached to the car that you tigged the firewall to. Is that something you also made? It looks like it would add a few inched of leg clearance.
Yes it definitely could be migged as well The piece that was already attached to the firewall was a replacement firewall in a similar shape to what stock would be. When possible I like to tig weld things so that they can be hammered afterwards
I have question about your bead rolling. Which die set are you using? I see you don’t do a pre stretch and your panels look really flat. Do you find that you don’t need to pre stretch with your die set?
It depends how deep you go and the thickness of the step. This panel had some “pop” in it too but I used 16 gauge. Also how it’s installed is a factor too when I do floor pans like this I find plug welding helps keep it flat when installed
I'm a beginner and have a silly question. If I'm making a panel, should I cut the piece bigger if I'm going to put beads in it? How do you calculate that so I don't waste metal because I started to short or make it too big
@@MakeItKustom I've basically wasted a full sheet of 18 gauge because of that.. I should have asked a year ago when I started following you. I have a 32 ford pickup that is consuming me. I appreciate the reply and your videos ✌🏼🙏

How do you like that makita electric shear? Does it distort? Currently using thin 3 inch cutoff discs to trim. Makes beautiful cuts but dusty and time consuming🙄
I love mine as well. Not cheap, but very functional. As stated, plan to creep up on the final cut line. Just like when using hand shears, creeping up to the line will drastically improve your accuracy.
Yes I’m going to come out with a Bead rolling video in the near future I will explain it better. I’m using a steel tipping wheel on the top and the bottom in this video

Would that planishing hammer of yours work on those welds better? Or do the welds damage the dies too much?
The dies are extremely hard I just couldn’t quite get the hammer in there for all of it I wanted to show hand stretching
I have question about your bead rolling. Which die set are you using? I see you don’t do a pre stretch and your panels look really flat. Do you find that you don’t need to pre stretch with your die set?

I'm a beginner and have a silly question. If I'm making a panel, should I cut the piece bigger if I'm going to put beads in it? How do you calculate that so I don't waste metal because I started to short or make it too big
I don’t make it any bigger. As long as the beads don’t run right over the edge, it cannot shrink.
@@MakeItKustom I've basically wasted a full sheet of 18 gauge because of that.. I should have asked a year ago when I started following you. I have a 32 ford pickup that is consuming me. I appreciate the reply and your videos ✌🏼🙏
I like it
How much charge for work like that
Are you sure that's 16 gauge? Nice job.
Yea it’s 16 for sure thanks man!
Any reason other than strength you used 16g over 18g
No, you’re correct, it’s just about the strength!
What grit do you use on the DA? I use my angle grinder with 2" and 3" discs solely. Never thought of the DA.
Are use 80 grit on my angle grinder and then 80 grit on the DA
Very clean work. Specially with finishing up grinding the welds smooth. What sander do you use? Thanks for the vids
Just a 80 grit on a DA for the final. Thanks a lot!
Nicely done what are the templates you are using and
Where did you get them?
The black templates are a Jamie Jordan series Mettler brothers tool
That metal recessed with 2 bead roll passes?
Yes!
Why do you hammer the welds and then grind/sand?
If the world is nice and smooth and consistent there’s barely too much material still hammering the weld helps stretch it
