My son has a rare brain disorder (Peri-ventricular Nodular Heterotopia) that happened when his neurons early in brain development didn't migrate as they all should, causing delays & epilepsy. Imagine in the future if they could use something like this to help the neurons that didn't migrate or imitate them, or to lessen the reaction to things or impulses that cause seizures.
Some of those like one more active prefrontal cortex is good thing questioning sources all sources . Not falling for cults. And what does conspiracy theory even mean

This is awesome. We could even create an anxiety drug that didn't deteriorate the number of real GABA receptors and avoid any withdrawal symptoms, or at least decrease them to non-receptor related symptoms.

I can't believe we're now in a reality where that's not a joke but an actual concern.
The therapy you described using Chemogenetics sounds really similar to EMDR therapy. Retraining the brain to associate good memories with a negative place or event. Super helpful to treat PTSD and has many uses beyond that.
Less damaging, more controlled study of neural activity is unequivocally good news for researching brains. So yay!
I personally can't wait to see the progress in mental health as a result of this innovation.
But anything that leads to more control over brain activity is inherently fear provoking as well (as SciShow seems well aware). It's easy to joke about this, too.
This is, like many things, a tool that undoubtedly has the potential to be misused. As far as I'm concerned, if someone can do this, they will at some point. But, I'd counter this with the extreme difficulty in doing so; brains are complex, and we're very far from the level of control in science fiction. Worrying about how we're being manipulated socially is far more prudent and real than worrying about hypothetical medical procedures. Hope this maybe curbs some panic for someone out there.
'Don't worry, this tool is only being used in lab animals,' is a wonderfully optimistic sentiment. If the past century has taught us anything, there are always people who see different applications for new technologies.

I get why people would be worried about this technology. I don't agree with those people, but I respect them. I don't think it helps anyone at all to just call them stupid, but through understanding their views we can educate them, or even in some cases educate ourselves, and hopefully find ourselves working together in the long term. Respect stems from humility though, and that's not easy, takes maturity...

The Assassin's Creed games actually covered this in one of their many sci fi concepts: One them being that humanity being created with a specific, genetically engineered neuro transmitter that responds to specific signals from the high tech equipment that their creators use; Basically to just control humanity.

That's not even remotely new technology. Anaesthetists have been doing that for ages and is one of their most common tasks.
I read a news article about the alleged case of scientists accidentally inhaling Nanoparticles and dying afterwards.
This could be really helpful to folks with attention disorders like ADHD and ADD.
I wonder if this could be used to help with epilepsy. Especially with focal onset seizures, maybe they could find a way to turn off the neural pathways that lead to seizures.
Researchers are looking into this. Recently there are setbacks for chemogenetics, but optogenetics is still an option and works similar. It would be nice to have a switch to stop seizures
I want to see chemogenetics used to inhibit the default node network. You could compare the effects of this to LSD which also inhibits the default node network.

hey guys! @SciShowPsych what you're talking about at 5:28 sounds very similar to what EMDR is in therapy! It helps people with PTSD and similar ailments be able to do things like regular people again. I've had it done on me over the course of maybe 5 full sessions of it, and can do things now that I never thought I could otherwise. It would be awesome to see a video on EMDR on here, for those that may have never heard of it, it was a life changer for me.

People, check if you have tmjd. That can cause tinnitus. What causes tmjd can be many things like a bad bite. If you clench your teeth and have a bad bite, that can very possibly be the cause of your tinnitus.

This seems like a really cool thing with lots of different applications. I mean, imagine if you could activate certain parts of the brain associated with math, logic, focus, creativity, etc. That would basically be a real life version of that pill in the movie "Limitless".
Now I need a time machine to stop this from being real
This reminds me of the work Professor Mikhail Shapiro and his team are doing, which was covered by Veritasium a few years ago. They're using injections of tiny bubbles to convert a focused ultrasound beam aimed at your head into a small disruption in your blood-brain barrier, allowing viral vectors in to introduce genes for these DREADDs into specific regions of the brain. That allows far more targeted psychoactive drug delivery / effects than any we have now, reducing potential side effects and increasing the efficacy of things like antidepressants, Parkinson's meds, etc. It's super interesting research!

So Charlie was taking part in the experiment and was getting smarter and smarter, day by day. Algernon - the mouse started experiment earlier than Charlie, so he could predict what will happen with him, by observing Algernon's progress in his intelligence increase.
After some time Charlie and the scientists noticed that the mouse's intelligence started dropping and no one knew why. At this time Charlie was way more intelligent than all the scientists combined, so he decided to start the research himself and he found where the problem was.
Charlie described this problem by analogy to the key and lock. He explained that the compound, discovered by scientists, was like a key, which fit to the hole of the lock, so you could put the key in. However you couldn't turn the key to open the lock - and that was the part that didn't fit.
In this metaphor, the lock is most probably some kind of receptor in the brain cells, that would unlock the potential to be very, very smart, and the key is a ligand, that binds to the receptor, but it's affinity is to low or something like that.
I hope it makes sense, but I might be wrong. If so, someone correct me, please.
