- This video shows how scientists can control the behaviour of cells simply by switching on a light. The technique, known as optogenetics, is teaching us about everything from how we wake up to how we learn. That's why Nature Methods has named optogenetics as its Method of the Year 2010. This is definitely new information for me. Further developments in optogenetics might lead to large improvements in neural science and could improve human life tremendously and it looks like a less invasive way.
Jahn Laster do you even understand what this means for the future? Not just for muscle rehabilitation, but for recovering from mental illness of all sorts. This is one of the breakthroughs that will revolutionize EVERYTHING!
Or controll everyrhing🤔
Yea...and for corrupt Governments to mind-control the masses by exposing their entire population to some "pandemic virus".
I literally laughed out loud at 2:58, how rude of them to interrupt that little dude's workout ^.^
Utterly mind-blowing! The implications!
Does anyone else here think this science can be turned into a weapon to use against humans?
Yes, after sowing the ground with electroporation....and other steps..
Already.
I think we’re too late…already been done
Yep its called the covid vaccine
100% Optogenetic's are being used on the world's LED streetlights for SMART cities.
Amazinf information. Wonderful also. Genetic Engineering, Neurology, Optics, Biology and life science coming together to prove something extraordinary.
This is easily the most exciting advancement for neuropsychology and neurobiology in years. It's so much cleaner than breeding or surgery and so much more capable of human application (not in the current state of course).
where are the Haffie students at?
This really make a lightbulb go off on your head.
Literally.
dude you're amazing i love this!
Wonderful video.
Colombia presente!
Applications for military or controlling Alternative Medicine proponents are exciting.
the heart thing is so scary, it could be used as a bioterrorism weapon, switch on the light and you get a heart attack
It's happening
To be apart of a revelation as important as this.. all of the good that will come from this is so immense! To those of you who are against these tests due to a simple fact of who's being the lab rat (or mouse in this circumstance) is incredibly (and not in the good fashion) narrow minded. I, personally, would find it a great honor to be selected to be involved in these studies and be apart of this breakthrough.
+Trevor Williams I am not against per se, but think about it what if you they insert the virus for gene therapy and you end up dying from an immune response. I think this technology is a blessing and we need to be careful with it
You, in fact, are the narrowminded person in this instance. Upon shallow thought and lack of empathy for more than just human benefit, this seems like a great revelation. One with more of an empathetic or 'woke' brain (more intelligent) would question whether studies using a living being at its disposal, are "worth" it.
This is pretty neat. The part where the heart cells are being stimulated makes me think that perhaps this technology could be applied as an effective treatment of heart disease.
This technology is being used in modern pacemaker devices.
Why can I not find these videos on facebook?
Exciting, but makes me glad I study plants. Maybe it could be used with stomata? e.g. CAM, or the opposite.
Ok i have questions: allergy to light and what does that mean? And should i stop drinking algae or not? Yes I'm pale
really cool~
i believe she confirmed that in the video
the narrator stated they were able to detect which nerve cells fire when a sleeping mouse wakes
3:53
One question to the experts here: Would it be possible to manipulate what we consider memory of experiences this way? Just wondering :D
Da
what is the protein thats being expressed called?
Does optogenetics only allow for input or also for output? Can we actually measure a neurons firing activity using similar techniques?
Yes, there are multiple ways to detect neuronal activity. One way is to couple a multielectrode array to the optical fiber to detect orthrodromic spikes.
Pressure of laser light or photoelectric photovoltaic effects?
Anyone knows what is the technique to use lasers to control the migration of the proliferation?
That would have a utility in tissue formation / proliferation of cells in organ scaffolds, etc.
But crowd controll
According to my professor in my neuroscience grad class, no, it does not all for measurement. At least not yet, anyway.
Who else is sent here by Haffie?
I was actually sent here by a commentor of the video below.

Shout out to Haffie!!!
Optogenetics: using light to control the brain. I want to use light in order to be very smart lol :D
Is this an invasive method? Does the beam just touch the forehead on the mouse, or must the fiber optic cable reach inside the brain?
+Guilherme lopes inside
+Guilherme lopes the fiber optic cable has to be close to the brain structure it activates
+Guilherme lopes
They have a non-invasive method were the beam simply touches the forehead and penetrates to the brain tissue if you google enough you will find the science articles
Yes D Hilton but you've got to inject the virus inside the brain somehow, like a stereotatic injection. And the beam loses intensity and diverges penetrating the skin, no?
Guilherme lopes
Are you interested in forming a hobby research group or study group. I am looking for people who are interested in this field...Have you heard about Radiotrophic Fungus? It is fungus that is sensitive to xrays and nuclear radiation. Perhaps the same genetically modified DNA process could be combined with this fungus to form a similiar process like opotogenetics expect with sensitivity to radio, WiFI, or LTE cell phone networks or xray waves. Do you know if there is any possible way that a virus could be genetically engineered to pass the blood brain barrier and infect the brain issue with out direct injection. Maybe something similar to meningitis.
This is 8 years old, why have I hardly heard of this being used?
because it's has huge potential, therapeutically and economically viable. So, the ones working on it, or starting the field, do not want a boom of research to happen, otherwise they will get behind, have more competition and lose the opportunity to become notorious/famous and become rich. It's how fucking society works and they are influenced by it, such as these genetic engineered rhodopsin neurons are influenced by light. For sure we do not have halorhodopsin in our amigdala neurons.
@@fontexstudios you're right! Ever think this is in the vaccines?
Cutting edge stuff
Interesting research, but poor mouse :-)
Quick to see the potential? The algal proteins were discovered in the 1970s. Optogenetics is a product of the 2000s. Hehe.
Si puo tradure in italiano Grazie
this is hilarious. Though I'm guessing most of these proteins only respond to visible spectrum light, I'm sure it's possible that engineered proteins could respond to, say, radio waves. We could control infected life forms with radio waves (!), perhaps even certain human behaviors
Yep
There are viral vectors that target specific neuronal subtypes as well as other specific tissue. It's always the affinity that is the problem. Sometimes there can be as little as 1% infection rates. The question is - could these low infection rates per exposure increase with successive administrations through the food supply? If so, you have a viable bioweapon. Why not just stop their hearts with the infection? Because if they've already taken the poison, you can extort them; light as a weapon.
6 yrs later
Sci-fi stuff amazing how far we've come as a species. Now how exactly do you target a specific neuronal population that's what I'm curious about, seems like injecting viruses into a brain is not very localized?
Thank god the internet exists, because if this was 50 years ago we would all be sheep buy now
It's GOD w a capital G
WOW!
In simple words..we are doomed
Still kicking?
@vrazwer She does not have any lisp at all. Never heard an English accent? The only word I think I heard pronounced differently (w/o listening again) was "algae", which is proper there, just as their pronunciation of the word "beta".
Probably best not to troll the science and technological vids for you, or English speaking ones ?
@Linsforever Ummm, what? I think you are missing a part of this story. It would not work on anybody who has not received the treatment to produce light gated ion channels. Secondly it would be very difficult to penetrate the chest. Third and lastly, people rely on pace makers currently, a device that is susceptible to EMP's. Your overall post was some what bothersome and uneducated but the most glaring problem was the use of "bioterroism".
one step closer to sword art online?
Method of the year for what exactly?. Corona spy program etc?
Compared to most stuff you'll find on RUclips isn't.
If there is a terrorist who can get a virus into the general food supply, optogenetics is the last thing we have to worry about.
Interesting, but why do people with lisps get hired to do voice acting?
I love ur comment s0 much i t00k a picture of it☺
😏😈😈😈👉👀🏃🏃🏃
7aya 5arab w farga3
Time to go cure rabies.
@Linsforever too much CIA series (e.g. Alias, Nikita ) is not healthy :)
It's called the Fox News Phenomenon ... Stupidity run rampant :)
Not sure why I laughed at 3:00 ..Probably been in science too long..
This is not fucking ethical
