I believe Big Daddy is top notch but I think a lot of modern gearheads don’t know about Mickey Thompson. He was to the same level but spread his expertise into many other facets of racing::LSR ,INDY, you name it. Sad,his life ended in 1988

My dad back in the 70's was a delivery driver for Jackson Bearing in Winter Haven, FL. They were the champion spark plug distributor in Florida as well as an auto parts/ machine shop before the chain auto parts stores showed up. So that's how my dad met Big. After a while he would hangout at Garlits shop and bs with Garlits, Tc and Connie. My dad got his nick name "pit crew" because he was at Garlits shop when Marvin Swartz came in and asked Garlits if he knew some guys to help him at a race in Lakeland. Garlits looked at my dad and said he lives in Winter Haven. So my pop went a helped Marvin. So on one run during the burnout my pops said it had two dead cylinders. After Marvin backed up my dad proceeded to swap the plug wires while the magneto was lighting him up. The track announcer said look at that pit crew go to work.
My dad at some point bought an old slingshot off of Garlits. I remember playing in it in 79/80. My dad street raced for cash, he let my uncle drive it somewhere between 80/81 which he ran into an orange grove tearing up the front end of the car so he paid my dad and took it home to Ft Pierce. To this day my dad still has the parachute and the Simpson fire suit that looks like it's made out of aluminum foil, and the twin breathers respirator face mask off of that slingshot and some Don Garlits story records.
Fast forward to the 20 teens, can't remember which year but I'm guessing say 2015 or maybe 2016. Anyway so we go to the Gator Nationals and BD is there as usual. We walk up and Big Daddy says "Hey Don , how have ya been?" They proceed to shoot the shiz for 15 minutes, meanwhile the lines growing for people wanting to buy his book and get an autograph.

I am not a drag racer, but Big Daddy is smart. Cut blower size to reduce speeds and run the full 1320 is the correct solution.
Road racing and ovals, mandate a spec tire that is DOT 200 or 400 tread wear compliant. That would limit traction which would slow engine development costs. Mandating that engines had to last 2 or 3 race weekends was a good step. RPM stresses internal parts, so to get the engines to last reduced stresses and slowed costs.

Nice get, Andy! The legend, Big Daddy Don Garlits himself. A true innovator, tires, transmissions, engine and chassis developments, even an electric-powered dragster, etc. still so many ideas and, still so active today. I was fortunate to see him run scores of times including his transition from front-engine dragster to rear as well as attending his PRA and PRO events in 1973 and 1974. Can't understand why, with all the great minds in Drag-Racing, no one has figured out how to come up with a viable, competitive rear-engine Funny Car.
Nothing like having a Blown, Nitro-fueled ,12,000 horsepower engine blow up in a driver's face...We see this happening over and over!
B.T.W. It's common knowledge that Big Daddy''s favorite engine is The Chrysler Hemi, but did he tell you that The Flathead Ford is his second personal favorite?
Thank you for this. Nice job, Andy!

Big Daddy has been the face of drag racing since I was a kid. When he left, the sport was diminished and was never the same to me. I can not express in words how much I enjoyed this interview with my only complaint being I wanted more. The more I learn about Don Garlits, the more I respect him. There are many great people over the decades of drag racing, but Big Daddy will always be the man, the myth, the legend. I am not normally any type of fan boy for anyone, but if I could meet only two famous people, thank them for what they have done they would be Donald Trump and Don Garlits. Great men in their own ways.

In 2014 @ Milan Dragway @ the Detroit Dragway Reunion My older brother & I met Don Garlits and his Grandson & saw the Swamp Rat VIII. They talked' about firing up the car in the pits and even spent time in his trailer with Don telling stories! Was a good day! My big regret is is that did not ask Don to "fullfil an old man's dream and that was to possibly sit in the cockpit of the car when they fired it" (I had always wanted to drive Top Fuel from the age of 16) PS; They never did fire it up 😕

Nice Andy, I almost made a Bid Daddy Don Garlits Drag Racing Board Game with him in the mid 80's. It fell apart after the hand shake....too bad. Still have it ready to go again,ha,ha.

Wow Andy! Don’t know I’ve seen a interview where Don opened up like this.
    Epic, historic stuff!
Imagine doing a documentary and getting someone current like Tony Stewart or Clay Millican to do the interview…

Didn't have this on my bingo card
What.a once in a lifetime experience
I grew by Island Drag way in Great Meadows NJ
Mr Garlits ran there in the 60 s
    And early 70 s
Supposedly he did one of his
    First 200 mph pass

Don looks and sounds much younger than 92. I can tell by his hat he is a wise man.
I remember watching drag racing as a kid back in the 60s. The TF cars smoked the tires the entire 1/4 mile.

This interview was awesome. Hard to cover a lifetime of work in a short video but heck a 12hr documentary still probably just hit the highlights. Now I want to know what he had done to that 75 motor that made it so far advanced.

@@UnityMotorSportsGarage Also impressive was how well you handled the interview. You knew your history and I didn't hear him correct you on anything I don't think and he seemed to appreciate the well-informed pointed questions about his life. Great job.

Let’s talk 1988 Hershey swap meet. So Garlits is there selling his old dodge stuff at his swap area, I knew who he was he was dressed like an old farmer but I knew who he was so I approached him and nobody was lined up for his autograph, I asked for his autograph (I’m 20 years old) so he gets out the old military aircraft carrier poster and said here you go boy COST ME 15 dollars back in 23:56 1988, no respect for this guy. I was the only one who knew who he was thanks Don, for charging me for the poster and your autograph.
