Another Winner Experiment! These are really interesting- very good to see for future reference if you come across something in your stash that isn't being used because maybe (like what I've done on more than one occasion) you got a great deal on so!e yarn intending to use it for a project that you never for around to doing and now You just don't like the color any more! Thanks for sharing- I just love these videotaped!
I'm glad that you enjoyed this one! My personal yarn stash is out of control. But I also just haven't had as much time for knitting with the kids around. I look forward to picking up with projects sometime soon. :)
I don't have a nanny. The boys go to preschool a few days a week which is when I do most of my work. I also will dye/edit while they nap and in the evenings sometime.
WOOOOOOW!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just clicked on this and skimmed to the end because i really didn't think this was gonna end up with any kind of good color BUT YOU REALLY DID SOME FREAKING MAGIC WITH THAT YELLOW!! IT IS GORGEOUS IT IS SOOOO GORGEOUS NOW!!! Now I'm gonna have to watch the whole thing..I already liked and subscribed . I am so blown away I though all we could get out of yellow would be orange or bright green. THANK YOU I HOPE I CAN FOLLOW THIS AND DO THIS!!!!
I'm so glad you liked this video! Green or Orange would be a good bet for overdyeing but I was curious what would happen if I went in an unexpected direction. I love love love overdyeing, pastels are definitely the easiest to play with but now I'm definitely not afraid of neon yellow!
@@ChemKnitsTutorials That was very cool to go in a different direction...it was like a miracle seeing the beauty that you achieved! I want to do this on a yellow and black plaid shirt jacket...my yellow is a little darker than yours and there is cream in it so I'm a little nervous...I just have to get up my nerve to do it now :) You definitely have an artist's eye. Maybe you are an artist or textile designer and I'll find out if I watch more of your videos. Thanks again.. I really appreciate this awesome video. It was such a great experience to see something I never expected!
I'm glad you found the time stamps. :D I try to put them in most of the videos so that people who want to use the video as a reference can easily re-watch (or skip ahead.)
I just ordered a couple of balls of Drops Fabel white so I can start to (over)dye. I could buy an undyed skein of yarn, but they are too expensive for me at the moment and the Drops Fabel yarn is for sale for now (about €1,69 for 50 grams). It is very cheap for sock yarn and if something goes wrong I don't have to throw away an expensive skein of yarn. I will try to see if I can dye with liquid food colorings, so my daughter can 'help' me too (she's only 5 years old). I don't want to use unsafe chemical dyes with her nearby. Plus, she loves to help!
Awesome! The liquid food coloring in Europe has slightly different components than the ones I use in the US, so your results might be slightly different. (But still awesome.) I know that KnitPicks ships to the UK, but I think that some people in Germany said that it doesn't ship there. I'm not sure about inexpensive European sources for bare yarn. If I find anything good I'll let you know. Have fun!
My husband works at a supermarkt where they sell Dr. Oetker food colorings. He will bring some once his shift is over. I hope they give a good result too. According to google they are good for yarn coloring too, so we'll see if it works out. If I like the dyeing process, I will buy some Wilton colorings as well and try that out. By the way, is there any difference between vinegar and citric acid when dyeing yarn?
Not really. You can get very similar results with both. I mostly use vinegar because it has been easier for me to find, but whenever I use KoolAid packets I'm using citric acid. You just need the coniditions to be acidic for things to work. Mostly it is a preference thing I've found.
I dyed some sock yarn with Mt. Dew, which makes the yarn night yellow, then dip dyed in Wilton's violet. My results were different. I got parts that were an electric purple. I bought more Mt. Dew, so I can see if I can duplicate the results. It's so awesome
The blue that’s in the violet and black mixed with the yellow will usually give a muddy brownish color - I think you could maybe get the orange you were hoping for if maybe tried a red or maybe fuchsia interesting way to make a brown though -👍🏻
I agree, using a red or pink would have brought a more orange color. (and an awesome one at that!) I was expecting some orange because the base of the broken violet is usually so pink so I wasn't expecting the purple to go through.... but I LOVE it! I really thought it would muddy but it was so much pretter than I could have imagined. (I really thought I was goofy to try to dye purple over yellow but I wanted to try overdyeing it with an unexpected color to see what kinds of results we would get. :) ) I have a bunch of mint yarns coming in that I'm SO EXCITED to overdye.
I have a lot of videos where I've dip dyed individual colors. I would be happy to point to a specific color if that would be helpful. I think in general, the colors are fairly true to the described name (with the exception of black, of course.) As for color breaking, that really depends on the yarn base, the acid concentration, and the color used. The formulas vary country to country, and sometimes even year to year for some of the colors. (I have 3 different versions of the black, for example.) There used to be a website that had swatches of 5 different brands and all of the colors plus even mixes, but unfortunately it no longer exists.
Color mixing is about proportions, and I was curious if we could transform the yellow into something else. Blue and Red were obvious choices, but I wanted to see what kinds of results we would get going in a different direction. Browns can be super pretty, too. :D
I try to when I can. Sometimes I show things on Instagram. I sell a lot of the yarn I dye in these videos (It allows me to get more yarn and dye etc) but I do end up keeping a fair amount for myself.
Ok on the colour wheel yellow and purple are what artists call complimentary when you mix them you get khaki depending on how strong the colours are it could be as dark as a nice muddy black to a beige. I’m an artist.
In this experiment I wanted to try to use a complementary color specifically to see if we would get a brown, or if the purple dye could overpower the yellow enough that we would see non muddy tones. The purple dye on the yellow turned into a beautiful purple and green gradient as the reds and blues in the dye broke.
I have a playlist dyeing cotton in various ways here ruclips.net/p/PLFvm3Bz7dhaWgsthkBEafNoljTWJLn5cY I've dyed a few linen blends but the overall dye type should be similar to that of cotton.
Amazing! I don't dye yarn but I am hooked to watching your experiments. Thank you
Thank you so much for watching! :D
I absolutely love the violet and green skein!
Thank you! I knew it was a risk but I wanted to show that you don't have to overdye with obvious color choices.

oh cool! Is there food coloring in the Mt Dew? (i'm assuming yes, but i'm not sure if I've ever had it to drink before.
@@ChemKnitsTutorials there is yellow 5 in it. It makes a VERY bright yellow. Very pretty. Very nice base for the broken violet
I overdyed some patons yellow with with Wilton’s violet and got some brownish reds and greens. It looks super cool.
I personally want to try over dyeing the yellow neon with a forest green.
That would be stunning. I love a deep forest green. :D
Great video, Rebecca!! This looks like a fun experiment!

Hi
Just a suggestion - would be good to see a reference hank of white dyed for each of the dyes to enable us to predict possible colours.
I have a lot of videos where I've dip dyed individual colors. I would be happy to point to a specific color if that would be helpful. I think in general, the colors are fairly true to the described name (with the exception of black, of course.) When the Violet comes out if the pot it looks like egg plant colour
The colors of this one are SO FUN. It almost makes me want to buy MORE of this yellow color to dye. :)
Haveing blizzard. Of snow now. Wow. Dirty snow. Blizzard lost power
OH NO! I hope that you are safe and warm.
Generally purple and yellow make brown. Why didn’t you dye with blue or red?
Color mixing is about proportions, and I was curious if we could transform the yellow into something else. Blue and Red were obvious choices, but I wanted to see what kinds of results we would get going in a different direction. Browns can be super pretty, too. :D
So cool thanks
Thank you!
Do you ever show anything you make with the yarns you dye?
I try to when I can. Sometimes I show things on Instagram. I sell a lot of the yarn I dye in these videos (It allows me to get more yarn and dye etc) but I do end up keeping a fair amount for myself.
@@ChemKnitsTutorials thank you! I've just discovered your channel and I'm checking out lots! 😄 great stuff!
@@deansgirl1369 thank you so much! I try to reply to questions etc but I'm going to be a lot slower over the next few weeks. 😀
Interesting!
Thank you! This was a fun one and I was really pleased with the final colors.
What are needed to dye on linen sarees
To dye linen or other plant fibers you want fiber reactive dyes. Food coloring and acid dyes won't work on linen and cotton.
Ok on the colour wheel yellow and purple are what artists call complimentary when you mix them you get khaki depending on how strong the colours are it could be as dark as a nice muddy black to a beige. I’m an artist.

Hi how to dye lemon yellow colour on mango yellow colour shiffon saree
Chiffon can be made out of a lot of different fiber types, from silk to synthetic. So the dye you need really depends on the fiber content.
How to dye two contrast colours on one saree
I have a playlist dyeing cotton in various ways here ruclips.net/p/PLFvm3Bz7dhaWgsthkBEafNoljTWJLn5cY I've dyed a few linen blends but the overall dye type should be similar to that of cotton.
Not crasy about black dye
I think between the two the purple was my favorite. :D
To get a true black takes a lot of dye
Yuck!
