Ugh. I've legit had to explain to someone before why the "compliments" they kept saying were backhanded compliments and why they were bad. I had a guy friend who would legit think he was giving a compliment when he would say things like "You're an LA 6" or some crap like that. He would try to explain that he was saying "you'd be ranked this number if you lived in this city, but if you live in this other city, you're this rating" and for a long time he genuinely thought it was a compliment. My husband and I had to explain to him more than once why that was not a compliment, and how backhanded it was, and just how flat out wrong and insulting it was. I'm like, "that's gross and I highly doubt that any woman you've ever said that to has actually been pleased by that comment." Sometimes people just don't get it. I think he eventually did get it, but I can't be 100% sure on that.

Eventually we will all be honey colored skin after interbreeding constantly. Sadly, we will all look the same. Then ppl will wish there were some differences again, but my science teacher said that only since the past 100 years, ppl have become super mobile, which brings many different races together. Mixing is frequent now. Races from everywhere r mixing rapidly. So, my science teacher said in 50 years, a huge amount of ppl will be honey colored, but he also said that might be boring. He also said red hair might phase out altogether. Which is sad cause my best friend has green eyes and cinnamon colored hair. She’s gorgeous!
But when she has children, which will likely be with a browned haired guy, then her kids may lose the red. It’s fascinating what will happen in the future?

      @purpledawn2727 4 года назад +158

Yeah, apparently people with light skin seems to get more vitamin d from the sun than darker skinned people. It makes sense though, people who live in nordic countries/scandinavia etc have very long and dark winters and in some months the sun won't show up at all. Being light skinned will help these people "absorb" the vitamin-d from the sun in the short summer months.
While in africa for example, where people are often darkest and the sun is really strong, there's no use in being light skinned (first of all, they'd burn) since they get enough sun and therefore vitamin d as is.
But offcourse, if you have very dark skin and on top of that live in a country with little sun exposure, then you might get some issues. It's a bit fascinating how different human features tells a tale of our evolution.

      YES, but NO.
The 2nd half of the sentence is true, but not because we, men, don´t know what we like, but, rather, BECAUSE MEN FEEL SPECIALLY ATTRACTED TO WOMEN WHO OWN THEIR BEAUTY. If a GIRL is SELF-CONFIDENT about her own SEX-APPEAL, she will be seen by men as prettier & sexier than if she´s not. It makes total sense.
And YOU, WOMEN, in fact operate like that, too, but in a lot more prominent way (a man HAS TO HAVE self-confidence in order to be perceived as attractive by girls, there´s no way around it, whereas a pretty girl will still be seen as attractive even if she´s not confident at all).

We all have insecurities but you gotta realize your beauty and mute the negatives you've heard from others bc the only reason ppl say things like that is bc they're jealous of you, and/ or they feel lack so much love for themselves that they feel better and bigger when they can make other ppl feel bad about their selves... and that's so so real!! If they can have gain power to make someone else feel bad, they love that control to make ppl feel like their less than them... and how horrible is it that, no matter how much we know that, it still stings to a point?!! Grade school though, and especially teenage years... your reputation and how your treated seriously will do the most damage!! And you'll carry on the negative comments even as an adult! Lol!! It's terrible how societies views on beauty is so narrow minded and harsh!! The world is becoming a better place though to accept everyone for who they are and is amazing!! Hopefully in the future, we'll see all the different "natural" body types on the runways bc that's how it should be! It's sad to think about honestly!!

Colorism is a product of the brainwashing that happens from the media, soap operas, movies and people who perpetuate negative stereotypes of black people. But I find that the beauty industry really exacerbates the problem by showcasing white and lighter skinned models in their campaigns through commercials and billboards. This is changing but not fast enough. Colorism is a terrible thing happening all over the Carribbean and it's terribly harmful to the victims of it. I'm so sorry that you experienced it. But I'm sure that you're gorgeous darling.

True but also colorism isn't as bad as it was back then in Jamaica..females with darker skin do work where ever they desire these days, and the truth is only small minded men devalue a woman based on the shade of thier skin, I'm lighter and yes I do get what your saying but colorism is worst in other countries than it is in Jamaica trust me.

I’m Caribbean and “white passing” (sorry I don’t know how to call it), and the amount of times that my grandma told me to marry a white guy because darker skinned guys will “ruin the family” is absolutely disgusting. Even as a kid I remember how weird I felt when she said it. She now understands why that’s wrong, but it’s systemic racism within ourselves, even with us being of mulato/black descent! It’s crazy.

It’s sad that the “English” from England, and the Dutch years ago decided it was ok to buy and trade Africans for work on their farms. Africans were poor and in poverty. So, many were happy to leave. Their families were paid off. Later sone ships came over from Spain and decided to disregard payment and promise them land or extra benefits after years of working. Still, the Africans saw it as a better chance of a future. It was in comparison. Sadly, many ppl looked down on them as sub par ppl cause they were so poor and uneducated. Had all their bosses or masters educated them by law, it would have brought the level of humanity higher. Sone were butlers, chefs, Nannie’s, etc., and treated well. Others on farms were treated as slaves. That was the problem. Even educated black workers treated the uneducated farm worker differently. It’s like the light skinned black treating the dark skinned black as sub-par. At least awareness is brewing. It takes time for ppl to stop criticizing each other of their cars, houses, looks. But everyone, and I mean everyone does it. Even black children who r taught not to be prejudice still do it. I see children judging other children. The more u ppl point out differences to their children, the more they become aware. Before BLM, many children were color blind. They r being taught 2 messages. That black is beautiful, but also, u r black and she is white. Most children don’t pay attention to it till it’s thrown at them. God made all skin types. It’s Gods design. So, no one is more special than another. Everyone was given the gift of life. It’s what u do with it that makes it special.

On the "dark skin is superior, scientifically", that's a subject that kinda has more nuance to it.
Dark skin is biologically superior where there is high amounts of sun, hence why humans around the equator (where the sun is much more intense) tend to have darker skin. Darker skin is much more protected from UV rays, and in areas where the sun is intense, it can still pierce the skin enough to produce Vitamin D.
Light skin, on the other hand, is biologically superior in areas where there is less sun. As you move further away from the equator, you both have less intense sunlight and the sun can go away for longer periods of time as the length of the day changes. This means it's important for the skin to resist the sun less in order to get the same amount of vitamin D as a dark skinned person on the equator.
Light skin going towards the equator is asking to get burnt, dark skin going towards the poles is asking for a Vitamin D deficiency.
Neither is really "superior" in an overall sense. We were all dark to start with, and evolved to have different tones based on different needs regarding sunlight. Different skin tones work better for different climates.
But you're absolutely right, that a dark skinned person should not by any stretch feel inferior for their skin tone. It's neither above nor below, just different.

    • @kbear6863
      @kbear6863 4 года назад +58

Exactly, vitamin D is a vital part of a healthy immune system meaning those with lighter skin travelling north would be more likely to survive disease etc thus overtime people moving further from the equator developed lighter skin through survival of fittest. People with darker skin tones living further up the northern hemisphere e.g Northern Europe should all take a vitamin D supplement everyday because it’s impossible for some people to make enough outside. It’s also extremely important for bone health as you need sufficient levels of vitamin D for your body to absorb and use the calcium in your diet.

I'm a POC woman, Chinese, and it was hard growing up. I am darker than a lot of my cousins who are more fair skinned. My uncle used to tell my cousins to call me 'charcoal' because my skin was darker. For a very long time, I felt really self conscious about it. As a small child, it really was awful of him to bully me and also teach his own children to do that. It messed with my confidence. My mom always said to ignore them and it didn't matter, but it really wasn't enough to make me feel better. I definitely have grown to be more comfortable in my own skin over time as I grew up, but I honestly wasn't comfortable until I was around 22. I'm 26 now. It's been a really long journey. I don't think anyone should be made to feel ugly or bad about themselves for something they can't control. I saw that same uncle just earlier this year and he had the gall to call me 'charcoal' again. I gave him a stare and ignored him.

All skin tones are superior in the conditions they adapted to. In places where you have day after day of little to no daylight In winter where you need to make your own vitamin d. Being able to absorb sunlight quickly can prevent severe rickets. In places closer to the equator fetal survival can be dependent on having activated melinin cells. Skin cancer is also highly prevelant for people who have or are carriers of the red haired gene in climates closer to the equator. Actually I would say the naturally blue eyes in a medium complexion is strickingly beautiful. I was always called ghosty because the "normal"white kids thought I was weird for not being able to tan. I may not be able to withstand standing in direct sun for four hours. But I can withstand snow and ice for long periods of time even if I am not dressed for it. So there are pros and cons to each phenotype on the planet. There is really interesting group of Asiatic people in northern Mongolia that can withstand Sub-Zero climates better then any other group in the world due to higher amounts of brown fats under their skin then any other groups. And another set of folks that can hold their breaths for six minutes easily. Both groups have slight genetic variations from all other populations. All people have wonderful traits. I learn something new about different cultures and people's every day. B blood types are better at digesting dairy and are less suseptable to altitude sickness. O blood types have better immune systems then anyone else, and A blood types are designed to best digest plants and grains. So name me any group on the face of the Earth and I will tell you at least one way they do something better then everyone else.

    PLEASE READ BEFORE COMMENTING --
    Some clarifications:
    1. You can still purchase hydroquinone over the counter in 1-3%. I misread! The study does state testing results found that some people experienced disfiguration of the skin while using hydroquinone topically in as little as 2%, so you should still be careful!
    2. As I stated in the video, I understand people use skin lightening products for specific areas like dark spots from acne, freckles and hyper-pigmentation, there isn't a problem with that! This video is to speak about the use of these products on a larger scale, and the dangers of overuse on larger areas.
    3. Addressing the comments concerning my misuse of the word superior to describe darker skin, I am in no way trying to belittle white or light skin. It is true that humans have evolved to withstand different climate conditions all over the world, so if I were talking about Scandinavia for example, it would be incorrect to state that darker skin is superior. However in the context of this video I've INTENTIONALLY used the word superior to describe dark skin, since skin bleaching is only an issue in regions of the world where having dark skin is in fact superior.
    4. Every skin tone is beautiful & everyone should wear SPF. I love you guys and thank you for being so civil in the comments!!! xxx Cydnee

This was fascinating to watch. When I lived in the southern Caribbean years ago I had a friend (literally the most stunning human I have ever seen/known) who hated her skin because she was very dark. I thought her skin was so beautiful (like velvet onyx), but she had been mocked all her life for the darkness of her skin (by her mother, friends, boyfriends, teachers, everyone). I was so shocked! I truly could not understand where they were coming from. Being much older now I have a stronger grasp on the indoctrination of the media with the narrative that dark = less attractive. I still find it to be as ludicrous as I ever did, but now I understand better where her pain and self-loathing came from. Grieves me to the core.

@Jen Hay I totally agree with your message. However, if I may, I might just rephrase this to be a statement for everyone, not just women. You’re so right that most media is presented through the white gaze, with white or light skinned models, actors and influencers. There are absolutely people who are attracted to darker skin tones because dark skin is beautiful! It NEEDS to be seen in the media just as much as white/light skin. Representation matters and beauty comes in every color and shape. And you’re right again with the cosmetic industry! While there seems to be a bit more of an improvement (at least to an extent :/ ) in including makeup specifically for darker skin tones, it still is not equal. Not every brand has the darker tones, especially when it comes to drugstore brands (at least the last time I checked). I’m no makeup guru or anything but I’ve liked how Fenty Beauty has sooo many different shades that also take into account undertones. Do you have any favorite brands?

I’m so glad ppl will eventually not notice color. I never grew up like that. It’s sad that ppl isolate themselves into zones where they feel most comfortable too. We have a huge Chinese and Korean residential area. I would ask my mother why they don’t speak to us like the other neighbors? She said cause they feel different. They need to be with their own kind to not feel different. It bothers me that those neighbors kids wouldn’t play with us. We r white. We wanted to know them better, but I think Asians segregate their own selves? It’s sad to see that cause I love to know everyone, but my science teacher said, Eventually we will all be honey colored skin after interbreeding constantly.

Exactly. We should maintain differences, but the last 30 years everyone is blending together. In 30-50 years, everyone will be honey colored skin and brown eyes. Everyone else will be rare.
My science teacher said that. He said the only reason ppl look different is because their country didn’t travel much. So, whole country had similar skin color, hair and eyes, like the Chinese, all look alike, very little difference. Soon, in short years from now, ppl won’t look so different anymore. It will be boring. Now, it’s interesting. Many different looks now, later no.

Instead of "skin-whitening" there should be more focus on protecting and repairing skin from the effects of the sun, regardless of what your original skin-tone is.

There's a reason nearly everyone claims some great great grandmother who was an "Indian princess" (lmao). Indigenous people have attractive features, high cheek bones, little body hair, no body odor, long pin straight hair (mine is to my waist), bronze and golden skin tones, slim muscular bodies, full lips..
Sure bad diets have affected some, but genetically, we have it pretty good. Idk why anyone would say black women aren't attractive either, their list of features are being copied by white people all the time.

@@LGAussie As to the Asian story, that's common of many ethnic groups who've suffered immense oppression throughout history, thus they're distrustful. My people do not trust the government in the slightest bit, like many won't get the vaccines because they have the smallpox blanket mentality, they are hugely suspicious. Especially because we were deemed high risk and were among the first to get access. There's a lot of deep, deep hurt in communities like mine, hurts that were inflicted upon us and none of them have ever really been rectified and no amends have been made.
The Japanese still have a lot of hurt about the concentration camps during WW2, for example. And the Koreans have a lot of hurt about the Japanese conquering and abusing them. These are all open wounds. Native people are still hurting because of colonization, there's been a lot more hurt since then, but that's still an open wound and it'll never heal. Everything else just makes it fester with infection.
So yeah, it's possible that we'll all be mixed and brown in the future, I personally think this civilisation will collapse long before that happens and we'll return to tribal ways. Whoever is left anyway. But the hurt isn't going to disappear. Especially when it's systemic and spans centuries. I think that's the most important thing to keep in mind when discussing these things. Intergenerational trauma.

As a white man, I just want to say this for all my dark skinned fellow humans out there.
You do not need to be lighter to be beautiful or to be handsome. Screw the media trying to portray beauty and elegance as some paper complexion white people and screw anyone who thinks otherwise. You are beautiful and loved regardless of how deep your skin tone is. The only thing your skin tone should define is what shade of foundation you buy, not who you are, not how people think of you.
And if the people in your life are cruel to you because you are dark, then screw them too, because they are so blinded to not see how gorgeous and amazing you are. Please know that whatever your situation is I appreciate you as a fellow human being.
Everyone deserves love and to be treated kindly and fairly, not just white people, not just lighter skinned people. And I want to pass love onto anyone reading this from one human to another ❤

But do the best you can to find something about yourself that you love. Once you've done that, embrace that and build from there. I've learned that two of the most powerful words are "I am". Start self talk or positive affirmations. Like "I am beautiful. I am creative", etc. Do them daily to replace and drown out the doubt. I avoided wearing clothing, different colors and makeup that I liked for years. There were even days that it was hard to look at myself in the mirror. I thought "Why bother with any of this it won't make me attractive?" But life is too short to not express yourself in how you dress or at all. When you do that you're denying yourself of being who you are. So switch your hair up, wear the makeup and clothes that you want to wear and be you.

In the case of skin whitening in the Philippines, it is more rooted in classism rather than due to colonial or racial reasons. Historically in Europe and Asia, having a darker complexion (naturally or by sunburn) is associated with having to work outside (farmers, labourers), thus, having a lighter skin tone, particularly among women, meant that they had the luxury of not having to work under the sun or even work at all. As time went on, this was embedded into the larger Filipino society as the norm; and is seen as equivalent to tanning your skin without the idea of classism attached. Basically, it wasn't introduced by the the colonisers, rather, it was already there.

Because its evolutionary (obvi) darker skin can cause problems in areas with less sunlight - like kiddos can develop rickets from lack of vitamin d - so supplementation is important! @@LGAussie tbh people overstate the amount of race mixing going on cuz most people still date within their own race/ethnic/nationality group. even then, race mixing doesnt really create people who have the same skin color and can vary quite a lot as genes create various phenotypes. such examples of this would be in heavily mixed countries like those in latin america such as mexico, brazil, venezuela, etc. also red hair genes cant really be phased out together as genes dont really work like that. even for someone who has red hair and their child doesnt, the child would still carry the genes for red hair. thus there is always a probability that the children of the child will have red hair and so on and so forth.

It’s fascinating what will happen in the future?

i do acknowledge that there are other races. but i don’t think too much into it.
i hate the whole “i don’t see color” i understand it’s probably from a form of loving intention but it’s just ignorant.

You did an amazing job delivering the topic in this video. Encouraging the conversation is important. We don't always have to have the same experiences or perspectives but in order for change to happen, we have to acknowledge this is a real concern to some people and then shift the conversation from 'blame' to 'how can we change this going forward'. Thank you for this :)

I recently found your channel. I am Latina and have more color in my skin than my sister. We grew up with the comments that said that she was more beautiful than me because she has lighter skin. Recently I went to Spain, particularly north of Spain. And there were a few people that told me hurtful things about the color of my skin and it messed up with my self esteem . I hope that more people will rise awareness about this topic, so children with darker skin would feel better with whom they are

Rosario, nothing wrong with your color. People
      Can be ignorant at times.
Your main battle is usually your thoughts.
      People will ALWAYS judge

The truth behind the belief that lighter skin is beautiful is because caucasians had more advanced technology than most other cultures and when they invaded places because of their technology they were revered as Gods. By technology I'm referring to the fact they were the first to travel on the sea and their weapons.

I don't judge anybody who bleaches their skin. I straighten my hair with relaxer. If you even wear make up your'e trying to enhance your looks to create features you don't have naturally. Skin bleaching is just controversial because skin color is so political. People be getting butt injections, breast implants and lip fillers and then clown on women who bleach their skin. I think its great if you can appreciate your skin's natural beauty. There are so many beautiful dark women, but I don't criticize women who bleach.

Girl, they're the same to me too ( not makeup though because you can love yourself before and after wearing makeup). But I still want everyone to love themselves in the skin they're in. Making advancements to your body shouldn't drastically change your natural body. And I don't agree with bleaching and tanning especially. But because of the history black people have with slavery and colorism, we are especially aware of skin bleaching

All changes are controversial - butt injections, breast implants, lip fillers, tanning, bleaching, relaxing straight hair, permanently curling straight hair. Varied opinions exist for them all.

@@Jessica-og4iq Not true. All people/races have melanocytes. We all (all races) have the same number of melanocytes - cells that make melanin, the dark pigment. However, some people make more melanin than others based on their genes. A healthy person should not care if another person changes herself or himself. What someone else does to his body is not a reflection of you and your self esteem. My esteem isn't hurt if someone else changes something about herself.

@@Jessica-og4iq Unfortunately, it is dangerous. Some people are simply compassionate and don't want to watch other people doing something dangerous to herself because of what has been ingrained into society for many years. Perhaps some people ,whether warranted or not, just want to encourage everyone to love themselves as they are.

Hi, I have a story to share
In my country/culture, bleaching is REALLY normal
    I'm 22 now. I had bleached my skin THRICE before I was 18. At around 14, 15, and 16.
When I'd go to my local parlor the lady there used to say "why don't you go for bleaching your face? It'd remove all that tanning, dirt etc". She was INSISTENT about it, and the younger me brought into it. I DID look fairer after using it, so I did not find a lot of harm (bruh I'm light skinned already, imagine that)
It was so so normalized in my mind because of the way the option was always within reach, and treated like it's equivalent to facial/waxing etc
I dont think the ladies there meant harm, but they were ignorant, they did not know
They need to market their services, and they do it by making you fee fussy about yourself
However, this needs legal intervention. The chemicals you mentioned are so, so toxic. I learnt something new. It boggles me that nobody knows about this and bleaching is a normal practice. It needs to be outlawed
I'll do my bit to spread education. Thank you for bringing up this issue

No offense but I kinda have to disagree with dark skin being superior. Light skin absorbs more vitamin D which is absolutely crucial when living in colder areas with less sunlight. Like you said at the beginning of the video, vitamin D deficiency can lead to depression and other health issues. There is a reason why different skin colours are more prevalent in certain regions. Evolution doesn't just happen if there's no benefit. No skin type is inherently superior, they are just better adjusted to certain environments.
