- Cyclekarts are relatively new in the UK, but have a big following global following, particularly in the USA.
They are scaled down racers, using around 200cc engines, based on designs of cars from the 1920s. Generally apart from the engine, wheels and some running gear, the rest is home built, so really is a 'kit' car. They usually take inspiration from a particular race car for the bodywork styling.
Races are held across the UK on both grass and tarmac, and includes a visit to the legendary Brooklands circuit. But the focus is on enjoyment, not necessarily winning.
Trevor caught up with a number of owners at the Newark Kit Car Festival where they were demonstrating their cars on a small circuit.

Great hobby. Brings back those halcyon days of motorsport on a reasonable budget! I’ve convinced my dad to join me in building one.
That is a beautiful car! I'm a cyclekart enthusiast in California. I participated in the 2016 Scottsdale Grand Prix, which had maybe 100 cyclecarts.
So clarify what you think a total build would cost? Giving that all work is done by the driver and not shopped out.
Probably I shouldn't have mentioned the Scottsdale Gran Prix, because it had practically nothing to do with cyclekarting in general. The cars were all built by a company (Vintage Kart Company), and you can buy one - for about $10,000. I have built cars of about the complexity of a cyclekart (like a 1/2 scale jeep) but for all the thinking I've done about cyclekarts, I haven't built one yet. So any ideas I have about cost are just guesses. You can buy new wheels for $375. If you really scrounge, I suppose you could get the parts for maybe $1000=1500. What do you think?
@@pudnbug Dude, you were in one cyclekart race a hundred years ago and you have always thought you were better than everyone else because of it, and it wasn't even proper cyclekarts it was some phoney kart company that made some crap karts nobody will ever remember. Nobody cares you were in some fake soap box race when you were 5 years old, lighten up!
Do you spell cyclekart or cyclecart? You use both.
Is it a cyclekart?

What a great way to slide around! I'd go for the old ERA look.
Never even heard of this but glad this got put in my "Recommended" list, this is all interesting!
Love the workmanship. A really well made and proportioned car. Having watched a number of videos from America, some of the ones over there are literal works of art. At the same time, some are cobbled together. That is what is soo great about this. It is the taking part more than anything. If my situation changed, I would love to have a go.
Looks amazing fun. Love the style of the karts
Wow, love that! Someone needs to produce a kit. It'd sell like hot cakes and might become a really popular racing formula. Cheaper even than banger racing. 10hp in that, on a tight kart track, whold be an absolute blast.
That looks real fun. Good video guys
This looks like great fun. 👍👍
Cool this popped in my feed and it is really interesting
It's from the USA? How've I not heard of it? Haha
Where are the renegades building these without the competitive restrictions? I am very interested in building one of these, but rear mounted lawn mower engines bore me. I want gears!
My dream is to get my hands on a Mitsuoka K3, a road legal mass manufactured 50cc cyclekart made in Japan in the early 2000's.
They look like Bantam front wheels ?? Very similar ethos to the old trials formula but single seater., love it.
Honda SuperCub I believe.
Imagine a Vtwin 620 cc in one of those
You trying to die? Lol
I think the death defying speeds is something they're trying to get away from, not aspire to.
I'd like to get into this, are there any build vids I can watch?

When the world eventually gets to be civilized, with no wars or poverty, Cyclekarts will be alongside bicycles the number 1 and 2 means of transport ( and fun )
Cyclekarts will always be something just for enthusiasts, because in daily life it would be impossible to use them.
@@mishanya3399 Why?
Just try to drive cyclekart with your family to the countryside or transport something big and heavy.
@@mishanya3399 Well in a civilized and future society I would assume any long trip would be taken by train not car anyway. And regarding the heavy stuff, I would also assume there would be special public vehicles available for transporting heavy stuff. So nobody would have to drive around in a truck their whole lives just because every two or three years they have to carry a SOFA somewhere. Don't you think?
Cool!
Any Hillside Mud Plugging Events?
Would it be possible to get this road legal in the UK?
If you built it around an existing tiny chassis like an Austin 7 that is registered already then it would be classed as a rebody, so yes you could ! 75" wheel base and 40" track.
I looked into this a few years ago as a general thought exercise, you can in theory, you'd put it through on a quadricycle IVA but it wouldn't be easy. You would need to deviate by quite an amount from the standard formula with full brakes, lights and a few other changes that I can't remember off the top of my head.
if Jeremy Clarkson could get that micro car he built registered or the electric car they built on top gear, everything is possible
Looks like I need to brush up on my welding skills and loose a few pounds
The wheels are tough to find and expensive.
I thought they use motor cycle tires.
Not really, like "DevKillward" stated.. it's motorcycle wheels. Which the first cars tended to use.

Honda C90 moped parts used to be dirt cheap until those bikes became collectable
It look like a french talbot 1950s f1 !
wait a minute , 200CC and only 6,5 HP ?? how ?? my old 125 CC bike already have 10-11, and modern ones are at 15 due to regulations , and with twice the CC , they make half the power ?
Lawn mower engine. De-tuned for a very long life as a low revving plodder.
Is it okay to copy the Caterham logo?
Nobody really objects if you do it for personal use but if you market them and sell them, even just a few they will start to look at you...
Lotus logo.
So they are called cyclekarts but they have an engine. They look great though .
Because they are built from motorcycle parts and are the size of a kart. They originated in the early 1900's at the dawn of the automotive age and were called cyclekarts originally.
@@umaikakudo Those are cycleCARS, its the same sort of idea but cyclekarts are even smaller.
Those guys all look like cannibals. That kid should run!
toot toot!
Why is it called a Cyclekart? Where is the Cycling?
Motorcycle engines and tires
Cycle wheels and a go-kart engine 200cc.
No such thing as four wheel bicycles _[four wheel two wheel cycles.]_ The "bi" in bi-cycle means "two"... hence bicycle is two wheeled cycle, tricycle is three wheeled cycle, quadcycle or quadricycle is four wheeled cycle _[Henry Ford called his first car a quadricycle, which is intelligent English.]_ Nonetheless still beautiful quadricycles.
Genius alert
Two track/lane* quadricycle to be exact.
*Engrish isn't my first language, so I don't know the adequate term here
You must be fun at parties.....
@@failranch9542😂
use electric engines
Need more power 😅
But that would miss the point. Simple, relatively safe and very cheap with the weedy motor. Still a great thrill on the right track.
I don't get why they use such weak engines... LAME! These things need to have a VFR 800 V four engine! Besides a 426 hemi the VFR engine is the best sounding engine ever made. You can also supercharge them! ;)
Because cheap, and they are go-kart more or less.
@@johngray3449 You could pick up a used motorcycle engine for just as cheap. Then you could have a go fast cart!
Because then people could easily kill themselves and the thing would need to be much stronger and have safety kit that would make it the size of the original car.
@@davidpalk5010 That's BS! There's tons of motorsports including motorcycle racing that proves your delusions are invalid...
@@spectrumofreality Well, build one and then try to get it through scrutineering. And, there are plenty of motorsports a bit like this but with more powerful engines and better safety. Those are called conventionalk historic racing. LOL!
