You need to torque the pinion nut before installing the ring gear. This allows for proper pinion bearing preload.
Glad it helped you out! Good luck, and thanks for watching Motorz!

Thank you for the feedback! We're the 2nd owner of the truck, and as far as we know the driveshaft has never been replaced. It looked stock and showed now signs of being aftermarket.
I know there are some things that did not get mentioned in the video, that some people would wonder, what about this and that? But all & all excellent example of gear work. I always appreciate a man who works on cars and trucks like they were all Lamborghinis, clean and organized.
Didn’t you mean inch pounds for the pinion torque?
Thanks gotta rebearing my rearend gonna install a new ring and pinion also. This was the first vid i found. Looks easy
I agree with last 2 comments, what about backlash?
Love this video great editing these guys are not using Windows Movie Maker!! Come on Brits we need to make more How to videos like this Americans do it really good thumbs up !!
So for a 4x4 you do the same to the front?
Why put in limited slip fluid since that was an open diff?
Not an open diff, ford 9.75 uses bevel springs behind the clutches behind the side gears. Clutches are also the biggest failing point in this gen F-150
Didn't see a center spring for the LSD clutches. Is this a limited slip or open diff? Why use the additive on an open diff?
Maybe it’s got a locker
Do i HAVE to reprogram going from stock to 4.88 or 4.56? Bought truck used and has a 6inch lift with 35s. Thanks
Chris, that was a excellent informative video. In fact I would say that your video is heads above similar repair and upgrade video's that sadly shows a unknowledgable wannabe talking about how to do a repair or upgrade and not having the ability to do the actual work. Keep making video's, I'll watch'em so I can learn to do my repairs right the first time.
I'd like to do this to my 2017 f150 rocky ridge. With the lift and 35s it could use more low end torque.
It makes a huge difference.
@@supupedskyline I just need to find a place here in ny or pa that will do it and not be crazy expensive. My dealer wants 3k to install just 3.73s.
That's too much. Find an off-road customization shop like ORW (Off Road Warehouse)
the 4.10 would give you more torque, and would be worse for highway, it would run your engine at much higher rpm at highway speeds, 4.10 is good for heavy towing or offroading, but your 3.73 is better for highway. gears range from 3.07 to 5.89. finding one in the middle is always safe for a regular use pickup
GREAT SHOW!!! i love both the mustang and f150 builds cause i have both vehicles. I have some questions about the gears. Will you need the friction modifier if you go with an ARB air locker? also i am running a 5.4 supercharged f150 prerunner setup and want to go fast, should i go with a 4.56 ring like you or should i go higher? My truck is only off road not highway.. so i the faster the better. thanks again for a great show.
great episode very helpful you guys helped me put a new limited slip in my 06 f150 and my brothers gonna change his horrible stock 3.27's to some sweet 3.73's in his 01 cobra. i had a question about your truck. it looks like when you where taking the drive shaft off it was a aftermarket aluminum one if that is in fact what it was can you tell me where to buy and who makes it? thanks!
Hi, how are you? Think you can help me. my 2014 f150 ecoboost has a 2.5 "lift and 35" tires and low fuel consumption. what gear do you recommend
I run the 4.56 on 35s i drive a lot of hills and it has helped
I recently regear my truck front and back, and it was recommended by the shop that I do a diff. Oil change after 500 miles, ita been almost 400 miles my question is, do I have to change the diff. Oil in the front too? I dont use the 4x4 at all so far, so can I do a rear diff oil only?
Ever notice there are no videos on changing the front gears on a 4x4 F150? Most likely too much cussing? I guess that's why you pay a garage to do it.
do you have to remove the pinion seal and bearing when you install new gears? like is it absolutely nessicery?
did you torque the pinion gear to specs when you did the paint test?
Is this the same/similar for 2003 F250/Excursion rear?
Probably
Handling that friction modifier without gloves. You are a braver man than I. That stuff is the bog of eternal stench in a bottle.
Well I have a 2009 F150 with a large lift kit with 40 inch tires what gear ratio do you suggest and do you have a link for the ones I need I’ve been searching but not sure after Coming across your video
i have a 1997 sierra 1500 with 3.73 gears i would like to put a 6inch lift and 35x12.50 would swaping to a 4.10 gear be better for driveing?? and will they be better for highway (60mph) and town (25mph) driveing
I am currently changing my differential and gears on my Mustang from a 327 to 373. When installing the differential they provided shims to achieve the 8 to 12 thousand end play. After you find the exact shim spacing between the differential and the axle tubes. The tech from Ford Racing said I would then order the correct shim for each side from Ford. Is this necessary or could I just use the shims that I used to get the correct end play
Do you need to change/upgrade the carrier to go from 3.73 to 4.56?
just thinking about my last comment. do you think it would be suggested to swap out my axle to a dana 40 instead of the factory f150 dif? I only ask because i am doing an ARB airlocker and gears on a 500+ HP 06 5.4 f150. thanks again
Hey, I've got a very good good question here. What differential should I get in my 1989 f150 302 lwb? It has 3.55 gear ratio in it but its so slow at first but goin at about 75mph I can just tap on the gas alittle bit and im already at like 90mph but it takes me like 10 seconds to get to 60mph what gear ratio should I get for it.
By the way, Chris, is this the biggest gear ratio I could get for my truck if I chose to get myself an 8 inch suspension lift and 36 inch tires?
do I have to replace the stock bearings ?
I want to go to 4.88 cuz I want to run on 37s
I have an 05 f150 and my pinion seal has gone bad is this the way to change it as in can I do this in my drive in a day ?
Does anyone know what is recommended for my F150 on 37s. Recently installed 37s and want to do this. Thanks in advance!
I run 456s but I also haul a camper and gang box
OK please can someone help me so I don’t know anything about gear ratio and I have a truck 🤦♂️ now the question is I currently have a f150 on 35 inch tires i’m swapping them out and I’m getting 37 inch tires I’m hearing from different people that I should change gear ratio and I shouldn’t change unless I do offloading which I do not so any advice definitely will help
Is there a programmer for a 2003 4.2 v6?
They make power tools
If I upgrade the rear to 4.56 do I need to replace the front gear too??
Yes. Since my truck was 2WD I only had to do the rear.
I have an 05 f150 with 5.4 n 3.73 ls diferential n I get horrible mpg what kind of gears can I switch for better mpg I don't town at all thanks
3.27
Any ford racing gear with a ratio of less than 3.73. So 3.55 or less. You should be able to find stock gears from a mustang owner who upgraded to 3.73 or 4.10
Will this work on a 2015-2020?
i called ford on my 2014 f-150 5.0 4x4 to get the gears changed and they told me that they were unable to do it because of the PCM. So am i SOL on getting them changed out. I do not have the space or time to do it myself.
Sucks aye! That's because our PCM's only have 3.31, 3.55, 3.73, and 4.10 for gearing. Nothing wrong with 4.10's :)! Cheers bud.
i just did all the bearings but when i tighten the two main caps my diff wont move? any clue?
I barley snugged them. Ima try and lessen the shims on the driver side
Did u figure it out I’m having same problem
OK i'm just curious why you would need to spend the extra $40 on a new inner pinion bearing to destroy rather than just use the original bearing? You didn't buy a new outer bearing so why buy a new inner bearing? Just a bit confused here if you could please explain that'd be much appreciated
He did use the old original bearings
old one might be worn out that the specs wont match with the new one going in, but the differences could be so small that they could be negligible.
No air ratchet? Don't use a razor blade. Did you see the scratches it makes? Use a green pad from the wife's kitchen. Where's the Detroit Locker? Thread lock the pinion nut. Use regular diff oil. Change it out after a couple hundred miles - break in. Lots of metal in the bottom of the case.
Okay so 4.56 is exactly what I need but I want to go with the 5.13 and will not be going any higher than 35” tires. Can anyone give me an estimate on the mpg strain per fun factor?
Your mpg will be horrendous.
5.13 would be for racing or rock crawling, otherwise 4.56 is plenty for 35s 5.13s can overheat your engine on the hwy , mpg will not change a whole lot just due to regear, its the 35s that will drop it, I had 13mpg before 35s and now its around 10
Never understood why Ford quit putting the 9-inch under their vehicles. If the 9-inch is strong enough for the Nascar vehicles with 800+ HP(yes, all stock cars have a Ford rearends whether Chevy, Toyota, or Dodge) why wouldn't they handle street horsepower? Besides, you can pull the chunk and wouldn't need to lay in the dirt to change a ring and pinion! Later, RT.
They're either heavier or more expensive, i guess.
+crackpotfox Both
How about the front?
This is my 2WD F-150, so no gears up front.
*wiggle wiggle wiggle* “OHH THATS HEAVY”
Isn't 4.10 gears better then 4.56
What about backlash ??? Very important in this job!!!! also marking the bearing caps. They need to go back to the same side they came off of...
I normally like your guys videos as they are very informative but the use of your tools in this one was just painful to watch.. Never use your torque wrench as a breaker bar that's just a bad idea.. and using a screwdriver as a chisel is just a abusing your tools guys..
Listen from 5:49 to 6:12 without looking at the video. Use your imagination.
You're welcome.
should of put in a locker
That was an Open diff, not a limited slip.. lol
I'm genuinely curious as to why you would bother lifting a 2wd.
Same reason you would lift a 4 wheel drive
And then when you get stuck, you can spin only your rear tires. But yeah keep saying it makes the same amount of sense to lift a 2wd and a 4wd
@@haydenbriggs well really the only realistic reason to lift a vehicle is purely to add ground clearance and good mt/xt tires plus a powerful winch will get you out for the most part. Granted 4x4 is a lot more HELPFUL but it has its limits as well as extra maintenance and repair costs.
Didn't hear a thing about preload and backlash in this vid.....
Joeski89 I was thinking the same thing. I wonder how long it lasted before it blew up.
Still my daily driver today... no issues. Thanks for watching!
Can I have a 7.17 rear end gear ratio?
Listen to it lol
Lmaoooo good one he just pop one
Just grind the old bearings and use them as dummy bearings. don't waste your money by buying new ones to destroy...
I’d recommend ordering a new one instead to ensure no differences caused by wear between the test bearing and the final one
first..
