  • The Home Hame Дом Dom project aims
-To build a sense of community between newcomers to Aberdeenshire and those who have lived here for a long time.
-To create opportunities for people to get to know each other to break down social barriers and forge new links.
    - Other potential benefits include improved language skills, greater understanding of shared culture, increased community capacity, increased confidence among participants, and stronger social networks.
We invited Home Hame Дом Dom community participants to make their own contribution to Across the Grain 2020.
So, here's something a little bit different. Enjoy!
The Across the Grain Festival 2020 is brought to you by Live Life Aberdeenshire.

I’m not a Doric speaker but have lived in Aberdeenshire for 17 years so hear it all about me. I think it’s a very rhythmic and poetic language, full of character and I find it fascinating. I imagine it took a lot of confidence for non-speakers to prepare their broadcasts so well done everyone!

Thanks everyone - In My Life My Land, another Across the Grain video showing this weekend, some older folk comment on how they feel Doric has almost disappeared - do you think this is the case?

This is common thinking amongst aulder folk. It came up a lot in events I attended at last year's Across the Grain. Younger folk are spikkin in Doric an makkin work in it, but their warlds arnae connected - there's a puckle o Doric online - ye kin see it bein used on FB, Twitter and Instagram but the auld folk dinnae see at, or see slam poetry or Scottish rap etc. We need tae jyne the twa warlds an wirk igither!

I'm fascinated at how Doric changes between towns and villages. It seems to still be evolving.
