A guided version of this for beginners would be cool. Where you help / explain what to listen for, where to focus the attention. Similar to the „Dynamic Test“ explanation .
Well the soundstage is basically "what's on stage": Imagine being on a concert and you see every instrument playing, you could probably focus on the drummer and just hear him, focus on the bass and hear just him out. This is basically what happens with a good headphone, you can just hear every part of the music as a whole. The imaging means the position of your sound. You can see how sound is being played from different angles and different heigths - close your eyes, could you tell where everything was? I agree with you some context would be nice, though. By the way, I'm certainly no expert in audio so it's just a very rough try of making you understand what the first things were for, I might be wrong here and there though lol
Basically, if your headphones are good enough then this won't really be a question. If you listened on the HD 660 S Like I am now, you will hear everything you see on screen with positional precision, because the HD 660 S has amazing imaging. Imaging allows you to tell you where things are physically in the room recording. So, it's not that you watch the video and are looking for something. You're testing your headphones' ability to reproduce what you see on screen with positional precision.

Came here to say the same. On my ADI-2 dac I can see that the balance is more in the left for the tests via the left and right level meters. Even when the triangle is played in front of the mic the balance is still to the left.
Everything before the 11min mark and after 22min mark is wonky to left. It's wayyyyyyyyy to left and not just little. Try the "ultima test" with good speakers..
This appears to be an artifact with youtube's processing that occurs on *some* playbacks from what I can gather. We'll try to upload a lossless version of the audio in the coming weeks. -Video Editor
Thanks for this. My KSC75 performs really admirably but at times I can here the driver flexing which just goes to show it’s weaknesses compared to higher end headphones. Would love a lossless version of this soon! Thank you once again for this! EDIT: the lossless version fixes the driver flex issue. Must have been noise because of RUclips compression.
The songs in the vocal tests have, without a doubt THE BEST vocal quality I've ever heard in a song. I didn't even know my headphones were capable of vocals that good until now. Why do these vocals just sound SO ALIVE compared to the vast majority of music ??? Why don't more songs have vocals like this ?
Most songs are tuned to sound good on crappy car stereos, elevator speakers, mobile phones and crappy equipment in general. So the majority of music is not alive as they are not mixed and recorded to sound alive.
I think these tracks are recordings of very high quality speakers in a sound treated room recorded by a very high quality binaural microphone. The Binaural microphone is can be seen in the soundstage section of the video, and essentially emulates how the shape of the ear effects sound coming in. The result is a much better sense of depth compared to when normally playing music through headphones, as each ear receives a mix of both channels, rather then only one channel (which is quite unnatural).
9:40 NB there is no height or depth in any two-channel recording as it cannot be conveyed with only two drivers as the sole source of sound. The sound will be continuous from left to right, but the depth will simply be mirrored to the front and the height only conveyed as tonality changes.
My $30 samson sr850 really passed the imaging test, the accuracy in which where the sound came from is incredible for its price provided. Not the best but very good.
Any way of getting an uncompressed/lossless file for download? Still sounds good, but I’m sure it would be more accurate without YT conversions. Excellent video though - love the idea
XM4 owner here! it is great, espescially once you play with the EQ to your liking, its is a bit "narrow" on the soundstage dept, still good, but not great, other than that, ANC is a big plus. yes it will still lose againts audiophile headphone in the same price range, but the features make up for it. so yeah, my conclusion is, XM4 for features(ANC, Ambient aware, Speak-to-Chat, touch controls, wireless, multi device, etc(theres a lot, even not so obvious ones)), and audioohile grade for bliss listening

Came in to test my hd58x, turns out i clicked on an asmr video. Came out relaxed and have forgotten i was testing my headphone. 10/10 would fall asleep to tap taps again
I am using a Grado SR60 and the different soundstage tests didn't really have any difference in experience for me (maybe the 6ft ones sounded louder in the first test). The imaging (directional) tests though were a different matter. I was able to make out the differences most of the time. The height changes didn't seem like height changes but rather like something moving closer v/s farther away (though my wife was able to discern those). For the vocal tests was I supposed to look out for something. I have no idea how those vocals should really sound. They of course sounded crisp and somewhere on the top of my head (or was it in front). Same with Electronic, rap and orchestra. Not sure what I was looking for, but they all sounded good to me. Dynamic range test was interesting as at the last beat of the drum, I could not hear the bell at all. EDIT: I then tested my Beyerdynamic Soul Byrd and this time I was able to understand the sound stage on this. The directional tests were also clear. The base test did not seem all that different. The vocals sounded good, but the female vocals were not as crisp as with the SR 60s. However, I could clearly hear the sound in front of me with Byrds. With the Dynamic test, I could hear the last bell on the Byrds. I went back to SR60 after testing the Byrds and this time I was able to understand the soundstage better on Test 1, but still feel like it's not that much different. Test 2 as much clearer. So looks like in my first attempt, I wasn't sure what I was looking for. Base sound stage wasn't all that different between wide and narrow. This time I was also able to hear the last bell during the Dynamic test.
why is the audio louder in the left ear for the tests? Are the microphones recording at significantly different levels? It's not even just my ears, I can see that L channel has louder levels
My HD-650s (driven by iFi Zen Air DAC) are great with the triangle & box man but, if I'm honest, I struggle to hear significant differences on soundstage. On the dynamic range, I barely heard the fifth bell, had to concentrate to convince myself I heard anything on the sixth, and I just don't believe there was a seventh! Scullcandy
Raycon (I own a pair of E25 pro they’re just a very bass heavy not a lot of room for the sound to exist but very good budget headphones)
Like I said these are not bad headphone brands by any means it’s just if you’re looking for a very good sound staging the lower end of these headphones is not what you’re gonna be looking for but if you do spend around 50 to around $100 in headphones these are not bad deals they have really good sound base heavy if you like that but if you want a good pair of headphones I recommend the Sennheiser HD 600s has a good higher tier set of headphones it has pretty much a flat line across the board lots of room for sound to exist really low subbase the higher end is pretty good to and they are open backs so you want a quiet room to listen to these in because there’s a lot of headphone bleed the ones that I use the ones that I mentioned before are really good because they have optional noise canceling and give you the feeling of sound staging and open backs without being an open backside of headphones at the price bracket I stated are they worth $400 with capacitive touch on the ear cups yes absolutely they are some of the best headphones I’ve ever used and I have gone through a lot of headphones around 60 to 70 maybe even up to 100 in my lifetime alone these stand out
Thank you for your time
