I currently have Third Man, The Man Who Fell To Earth, Days of Heaven, Last Year in Marienbad, Howard's End, Leon Morin, Priest, Harold and Maude, Rosemary's Baby, Nashville, Don't Look Now, and The Confession. Also have OOP versions of Le Cercle Rouge, Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down(dual pack), Picnic At Hanging Rock(Novel version), La Dolce Vita and Chungking Express. Kinda went on an OOP Criterion Blu ray crusade last year. 😅
I have the Dryer Dvd box set. Bought it used too. Wish it was on Blu-ray but it contains his best films in my opinion. Ordet and Days of Wrath is amazing films
Hi, DJ and Conner! Thanks for another interesting video. A few years ago, I bought the 1928 silent German classic, "Pandora's Box," on eBay when it was out of print. I was kicking myself for not buying it at a much better price during a Barnes & Noble sale, but at least I have it. I think both of you would enjoy it and specifically the striking performance by Louise Brooks. Also, please do a video on "The Third Man" similar to the one you recently did on "The Killing." "The Third Man" is one of my 10 favorite films, and I once paid a theater in Fort Wayne $10 for their display poster when they were finished with it.
I need to fill in the Pabst-shaped hole in my blind spot. Thank you for the recommendation, The Third Man would make for a great Criteriom Corner discussion!
The Man Who Fell to Earth is always over $200 so the day I found it on eBay for $90 used I had to buy it. It’s in such great and perfect condition too. That’s one of my favorites I’ve been able to buy along with Criterion’s blu ray of Last Year at Marienbad. Two of my prized possessions.
Hi DJ and Conner. I’ve been collecting Criterion for about 20 years, so I have almost all the OOP titles with a couple of exceptions: 1) AK100: 25 Films of Akira Kurosawa box set. I could have easily brought this set multiple times during the 50% sales for $200, but I declined. My rationale at the time was that I had all the existing DVD’s and Blu-Rays that Criterion released at the time, so why bother getting a DVD set with all these duplicate AK titles. At the time when the box set was released there were five titles that were unavailable on Criterion: 1) Sanshiro Sugata, 2) The Most Beautiful, 3) Sanshiro Sugata Part II 4) The Men Who Tread on the Tiger’s Tail (subsequently these four titles have been released by Criterion in their Eclipse Series #23: The First Films of Akira Kurosawa) and 5) Madadayo. There are five titles missing from the set: The Quiet Duel, Dersu Uzala, Ran, Dreams and Rhapsody in August, of which Ran was released separately on DVD by Criterion previously and Dreams was released on DVD & BR subsequently since the release of the boxset). So I eagerly await this set to be released on Blu-Ray. 2) Essential Art House: 50 Years of Janus Films, which I never got the opportunity to purchase. And finally, there are most of the titles in the Merchant-Ivory Line which I don’t have.
I also have six OOP! Two by Jean-Pierre Melville, one of my favorite directors- Bob le Flambeur and Leon Morin, Priest. Both were about $20 (Academy Records in NYC and eBay.) Days of Heaven, which I picked up before it was OOP bc I love Sam Shepard. Ran, which I used my Mercari balance for, so I feel like I realllly didn't pay the $50 for it (dangerous.) Howards End, which was one of the very first Criterions I ever bought bc I loved the book. And I received the Dreyer boxset as a gift a couple years ago.
The next out of print title I think will end up happening is the Criterion 2012 bluray release of In The Mood For Love, where I'm predicting it will be replaced with the 2022 release instead... which uh... has a puke green tint across the entire film. So as soon as the announcement was made for the 4K release, I scooped up the 2012 bluray because of the gorgeous red in version of the film.
I have quite a stack of OOP Criterion releases/editions: the dual-format + novel Picnic At Hanging Rock, A Woman is a Woman (only DVD), Forbidden Games (only DVD), Le Doulos (only DVD), Last Year at Marienbad, Leon Morin Priest, Harold & Maude (one of my favorite movies!), La Dolce Vita, Don't Look Now, and then I also have a few dual-format releases that they no longer produce as such and only separately, like The Freshman and the Jacques Demy set. I had Army of Shadows when it was OOP but now it's back in print :) And I have an old thick DVD copy of L'avventura, which has since been upgraded and redone. The Orphic Trilogy is one I would love to come back in print!
I don't own any OOP Criterion titles. But my two personal favorite OOP titles is a "Collaborations: Zhang Yimou & Gong Li" 7-film bluray boxset from Imprint Films (Australian label), which includes The Red Lantern & To Live... my god those films are incredible. That boxset is definitely one of the holy grails of my physical media collection. The release is about on-par with Criterion's World of Wong Kar Wai boxset. The other is a limited best buy run of Akira Kurosawa's Ran in a 4K UHD steelbook.
My first ever criterion sale was February Flash Sale 2021... literally a month later Paramount pulled the plug on several titles that immediately went OOP. I definitely have been afraid of titles going OOP ever since. Because I had like one single sale where I could buy them for my first ever purchase of titles and none of them were immediate must-buys for me at the time. Ugh.
FYI I think you are wrong about The Freshman being Oop. I just picked it up in October during the flash sale and the Criterion site only lists the combo pack. Great video
LET HIM HAVE IT, DJ! I've been waiting for this. And was not disappointed. Way better than the last time someone let me have it on my Birthday. Sweet revenge it was. And you know how revenge is best served cold? All I'm saying is that you gave Conner a sweet gift because as good as that Super Sweet Revenge Ripple Fudge Fury Ice Cream Cake that someone gave me on my Birthday, The Third Man is an even better gift based on the happiness on Conner's face. Happy Birthday, Conner! Also, very nice Father's Day gift from Grace. Wow. That has to be the greatest name for a woman or girlfriend ever. It makes a guy want to man up and be more worthy of someone graceful. Also, with that new Marilyn Monroe movie out, I was thinking how Marilyn Monroe was considered one of the most attractive actresses, but Grace Kelly has to be up there. And her Lisa Rear Window character was one of the greatest female characters in the history of film. I'd put her up there with Mary from It's a Wonderful Life. Would be interested in your thoughts on the top most masculine and feminine characters. But I understand you not wanting to touch that right now with a 39 and a half foot North Pole meaning until Christmas time because Mary Bailey has to be up there. Also, if Conner gave you the hundred instead of gracefully accepting the gift, then you should use it to reveal that you picked up the actual Citizen Kane sled at some random garage sale and take a picture of your kids using it for sledding while playing The Third Man theme. That wasn't rhetorical when I asked if you know how revenge is best served cold. Because clearly you know because beef can only be squashed when warm. I don't where I'm going with this one DJ but I just saw your community post show up and got distracted along with trying to remember what I rated "Don't Look Now" after Conner brought up the Christopher Nolan association because I too love Christopher Nolan but I don't remember it. Anyways, my only beef with this video is that it wasn't longer. I'm subscribed to channels that regularly do 5 hour streams, and there's always 2x speed so I hope you guys never worry about not being interesting to listen to for longer periods. Of course, do whatever makes you happy and helps your channel but you are one of my favorite you tubers it's awesome hearing more from you in short or longer segments. I understand people not wanting to hear more from people where they want more of the fast forward to the end of the video for the rating to hear if they should check out a movie and then peace out, but for people I like, I appreciate more unfiltered thoughts. I generally wouldn't want to listen to long talks because I'd rather just know if I should see something, watch, read, or play something and then I want to be the one to talk about it, not listen to others, but you're an exception where I appreciate your thoughts because I hold your opinion in high regard. I knocked Bride of Frankenstein from being the only 10/10 horror movie thanks to your discussion with Conner...but I think I might have another one if you guys do another Halloween video. Being that I just read your community post, it's nice that we'll get to see the old place again because, man, that's such a classy vibrant display! You guys rock! DJ, you're a light in this world. Hope you and your family have a very Happy October.
The Dreyer box set is a must even on DVD. Ordet is probably his greatest film and Getrud isn’t far behind. Day Of Wrath is also great and they throw in a documentary about him as well.
The new PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK 4K edition is a disaster, so hold onto your copy. Criterion MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH is one of the best scope transfers of any scope film Criterion has ever issued in their entire history. I saw clips of the 4K ver sion, but am not convinced that, as good as it looks, can totally surpass the out of print Criterion. The later limited edition Lionsgate Blu-ray was awful image-wise, so be sure to skip it. There is more to WALKABOUT than you might think, though you should try to see Roeg's EUREKA, his most underrated film. Also, he co-directed PERFORMANCE with Mick Jagger in the lead and that has an excellent Blu-ray from Warner Archive that is readily available and not that expensive.
Ahhh I’ve missed you guys!!! I just got an out of print myself recently: Harold and Maude!!
These videos are always great! You two just make incredible content. Really excited for the entire collection video.
I currently have Third Man, The Man Who Fell To Earth, Days of Heaven, Last Year in Marienbad, Howard's End, Leon Morin, Priest, Harold and Maude, Rosemary's Baby, Nashville, Don't Look Now, and The Confession.

Don’t look now is coming back in print this October
@175chaunceytovan I saw! Great that it's back in print in the collection even though Studio Canal released a 4k too.
I have the Dryer Dvd box set. Bought it used too. Wish it was on Blu-ray but it contains his best films in my opinion. Ordet and Days of Wrath is amazing films
Wow! Howard’s end is going for that much? I just found it a week ago used but in excellent condition… for $1!!! Score
Sue out here making out like a bandit! Great work!

Conner, country music is awesome. Old country is about sticking to the Man, falling in love, and doing drugs then getting off of those same drugs.

Didn’t know the third man was that expensive until a friend of mine freaked out i found it for $3 at goodwill
