2023 Mazda CX-60 review: Is the new hybrid, petrol or diesel family SUV really a BMW X3 rival?

  • The 2023 Mazda CX-60 is finally available in Australia, and it's looking to change the way the Japanese brand is perceived Down Under. Of course, Mazda's been moving upmarket for years now, but the CX-60 is the model that really pushes it into the premium market.
As such, the all-new mid-size SUV finds itself going tyre to tyre with the BMW X3, Audi Q3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC, among others, all off the back of a new rear-wheel-drive platform with inline six-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, as well as a plug-in hybrid powertrain based around a four-cylinder unit.
So, in this expert review, CarsGuide Journalist Tom White attends the CX-60's national media launch to assess just how well it rises to the German Big Three challenge. After all, it really does have to impress if it's to be taken seriously at this price point.

I took the diesel GT for a test drive a couple of days ago. Fit and finish is very good and most of the touch points are soft. I'm waiting on the plug-in GT to make the most of Government incentives and novated lease bonuses. The larger screens are standard in the plug-in hybrids. The drive certainly feels more Euro influenced.

I test-drove the diesel version of this car yesterday. The power, interior design, and exterior appearance are impressive. It felt great driving on flat roads. However, the road noise was quite loud when driving over coarse chip at speed. It's not a quiet highway cruiser; instead, it's loud and boomy. The suspension feels cheap and doesn't effectively absorb bumps or road imperfections. Additionally, there was a small rattle in the dashboard. Overall, I would not recommend this car yet, but I'd like to one day, after Mazda do the engineering properly, and address the asking price. Its unresolved.

I have noted one MASSIVE disadvantage is the price, totally overpriced for what it is - In Australia Mazda CX9 begins $47,600 while the CX90 will begin at $74,385 - this is an increase of a whopping 56% and totally unjustified when you calculate the total package - this is ridiculous considering Mazda's CX90 is advertised as CX9s replacement which it obviously is not - it is also obvious Mazda Corp. is trying to outdo the German brands like BMW well good luck not with my money

I bought mine couple weeks ago, mine is a 3.3 Ltr petrol Azami Sp. If you are expecting a very smooth and comfortable ride then this car is not for you. I love a bit firm and rigid ride so I don't have any issues with it. I love the way it sounds and goes around the corners.
    Pros:
    1. Pulls decent 2. Good gear transition 3. Good visibility all around 4. Comfortable seats 5. User friendly infotainment system 6. Nice sound system 7. Responsive steering 8. Adaptive cruise control system is handy 8. 360 degree camera is pretty accurate 9. Very responsive braking system. 10. Spacious interior and boot space.
    Cons:
    1. Not enough sound proofing 2. Hungry for fuel 3. Windows get foggy very easily 4. I-stop isn't the best 5. Interior plastics are very delicate 6. Sunroof only opens halfway 7. Fake exhaust tips are the biggest turn off.
In the end I will say it's not for every one, specially who are after a comfortable family ride. The exterior is dope. It's not too flashy. It looks far better in person. Again it depends on personal preferences. Over all I am very satisfied for the price I have paid for it. Yes! you could go with other European and Korean brands but I believe in Japanese reliability. Would recommend it to someone who likes a bit of spirited driving with practicality.

Unfortunately this car is a pile of junk, the car is noisy, crashy ride, poorly built with little insulation. The windows steam up if parked for an hour. The technology in the car doesn't work, driver recognition is a joke. The noise from the boot with rattles etc are unbearable, the lane assist is so aggressive it's dangerous and cannot be permanently disabled. The doors feel like paper when opening/closing. I bought a CX5 and a CX60 a month ago and I hate the CX60, the CX5 is great, wish I had just bought two of them.
