Full Bug is one of my all-time favorites. Top notch guitar playing, and everyone else holds their own on this one. One of those songs that has everything going for it.

Dave is the one who is playing the acoustic guitar at the start, and he’s also playing the harmonica in this track. He is the man!

I'm glad Big Bad Bill is your favorite. In an interview, Eddie talked about him and Alex playing small gigs with his dad for extra money, so I really appreciate getting hear a taste of that.

The "Happy Trails" song was sung by Roy Rodgers and Dale Evans at the end of the Roy Rodgers Show.

Me personally, I don't care one bit about those underwhelming covers when there's guitar riffs like the one in Full Bug, Little Guitars, and Intruder. This album has some spectacular original material on it. I'm very excited for 1984. It's not easy to choose a favorite from that album, but Drop Dead Legs and Top Jimmy are bangers. Van Hagar has mucho bangers. My favorite album surprisingly is Balance out of that era, but you will probably love Runaround, Pound Cake, Finish What You Started, and you can't have Van Hagar without Dreams and Right Now!!

One of my all-time favourite albums by any band, and number four from Van Halen, beaten only by the debut, women and children, first and fair warning. A perfect summer album.

Michael Anthony should get credit for matching that melodic breakdown during the guitar solo

Van Halen and Van Hagar are essentially two different bands. Completely different sounds. There will be a great deal of debate in the chat regarding these two eras. Three things are inevitable in life- death, taxes, and Van Halen fans at each other throats LOL

When you get to 1984, Top Jimmy cooks, Top Jimmy swings is all I gotta say...

My fav songs from 1984 are Drop Dead Legs & Top Jimmy. Love the guitar in those songs.
No, not excited for Sammy era but that's ok, you do reactions to other bands too.
You pointed out how "versatile" Dave was & that's the thing about Sammy, his voice was pretty "typical" sounding for the 80's rock era & he sounded the same every song to me & did long before he joined VH.
So basically my fav rock band from about 13 to 20 years old replaced a really interesting singer with a guy that I already didn't like much lol. I really tried to like the new VH but I wasn't going to lie to myself & pretend I liked it if I didn't, & I didn't. The edgy originality they had was gone to me.
It was a very commercially successful decision for them all though. Many VH fans didn't care & Sammy brought his own fairly sizable fanbase with him. It just sounded like the Sammy Hagar band to me, with a better backup band.
No offense intended to Van Halen fans of the Sammy era, just wasn't my cup of tea.
I met EVH in 1982 & he was very nice to me & my friends & it was a highlight of my young life, so believe me, I really wanted to like whatever they put out, but as good as the guitar playing still was it just didn't capture my soul like it had before.
If you like more conventionsl sounding rock, you might really like the Sammy era more.

The great deeper cuts you haven't done yet on 1984 are Top Jimmy, Drop Dead Legs, I'll Wait, and my personal favorites Girl Gone Bad and House of Pain

I don't think Eddie liked doing all the cover songs on this album! I love the Van Hagar era! Some great music!

Great album imo. Highlights are Full Bug, Little Guitars, Secrets. But I was a little kid unfamiliar with VH. If I'd been a teen or 20s hard rocker I'd have been disappointed. But as an adult I like their old timey tunes Big Bad Bill and Happy Trails 👍 Van Hagar lost me, I was all into Ramones, REM etc back then

The band is more serious in the Van Hagar era. A lot of power ballads, not my cup of tea.

Onto 1984. Luckly you got the hits out of the way which are the ones I always skip. They're overplayed and I was sick of them by the time 1990 "rolled around.
