“Teacake gave me the whole world; everyday.” Notice that the “whole world” to Janie was simply allowing her to be herself while giving her unconditional love, time, & affection. That’s it. That’s all. And I love that. I want that world!
I feel all he stole her off was her attachment with the prejudice people put in her mind in garb of whats the so called 'Right thing to do or not to do list' ...
When I saw this as a teenager, I didn’t fully understand it. Being raised in a strict religious household, I figured she just learned a lesson about cheating or something. As a married adult, I FULLY understand her plight of being married to men who saw her as a workhorse or a show piece and then meeting someone who finally saw HER. They met at just the right moment in her life.
Janie represents so many women who try to please God and live to please her husband and forget about herself until so many years pass she doesn’t even know who she is. Her love with Tea Cake is what every one wants in life, to live freely with true love and happiness!
Melanie I agree with your point of view but I still think it is a love story. She discovered her self by choosing to love whom she wanted regardless of what the townspeople felt. It was short lived but she found everything in Teacake that she lacked in Jodie.

My fiance just passed away on July 18, 2016. I've never loved a man so much. He showed me how to love myself and after that I was able to love him, openly. We most definitely had that Janie and Tea Cake kinda love. There was no question about that. I will always and forever love him for the man he was to my babies and I and also the way he loved me until he took his last breath. This has been my favorite movie since it came out. Finally, I was blessed with the type of love that I envyed so much from this movie. I love u Clarence Julius McDonald Sr and I always will.

I believe it was because she left Joe after he hit her but no one knew who T Cake was and he had nothing to offer and after the town feared he would take all she had and leave her
I love this movie reminds me when I was married to my husband he died 1985 and I never found that love like that again so I stopped looking because God built him for me and no one else that's true love so I stopped looking and just to learn to love myself and learn to love God Amen I miss you Robert I know you are in heaven I miss you and still love you
I understand that kind of love too. My husband died 3 yrs ago at age 70. We'd known each other since I was 16 & he was 22. We said 'I love you '..all through the day, sometimes falling asleep holding hands. I think about him & miss him every day.

People seem to focus so much on the title of the movie and not the plot of it. I love this movie so much. Freedom is an amazing feeling and janie got denied it for so long and so of course she ran off with the love of her life, the man who loved her for her free spirit and independent nature. After a lifetime of being made to live for others, how others expected her to live- she deserved to live for herself. To love who she wanted to love. Espescially back then, when settlig into a mundane yet comfy life was expected, and to want more was selfish and unrealistic. All in all, such an amazing movie.
yeah, it's a bunch of Janie's now living that freedom with section 8 & kids who have no clue what a mundane comfy life looks or feel like because their neighborhoods have morphed into hoods/ghetto
What About: Janie was married though (in the book also to tea cake) and didn’t have any kids. Living outside of society is not the same as living at the bottom of society.
The thing I really like about this movie is how back then black people were able to unify and build towns and economically unify without any handouts or reliance from anybody else. What happened
+Robert Youngblood you notice it's a bunch of men around in this time, look at times now most men have abandoned the home front leaving the women to depend on the government.
This is based on the book but leaves so many important things out the book is art. the book is beautiful, you don’t get to know Janie like you should or Joe Starks, or her Nana, or Teacake so much of the story is missing but I guess they did what they could. Zora Neale Hurston is an amazing author who wrote this beautiful story if you haven’t already please read her work!
That is correct . I've been there had this book in my hand read part but not all, guess I wasn't ready for it as i am today. I even came out to enjoy the historical events held there in Her honor in Eatenville . People should go in person check this historical place out her home still stands same very spot it was built , folk should contribute More to preserve treasures such as these .
True Quote from the movie: "You only old when you tell people when you were born". My husband was 13 years older than me, people said I was crazy to marry someone that much older than I am. My husband showed me unconditional love rip honey!... RIP my love! this movie has personal parts of my life as well in it. Thank you Halle Berry for sharing your talents with us.
You're only old if you treat yourself that way! From a 40-Something.... The eldest I ever been with was 2o years. I just turned 24, he was going on 44. We only lasted 1.5 year, as, he just found out about cancer soon after we got together, and it was his throat. But he was abusive. I met him through my bro as they were friends, but if my bro knew he was abusive and mistreating me, he would not allow us together.
However, I am beyond elated for you the May-december were all positives. Sadly, mine were mostly negatives. But not all elder guys are the same. There are loving ones out there, I just met the wrong ones!
@@holyexperience1976 sorry to hear that. My fiance was just 6 years older than me. I was 40 and he was 46, the first man that ever truly loved me and treated me like a real woman should be treated......God let me have him for 6 years, then in 2008 my world was shattered beyond belief, he had stage 4 cancer of the esophagus. Esophageal cancer, he only had 4 months to live, he died in my arms at the hospital. That day he died part of me died with him, been by my self since,I'm trying to date but it's hard, so I'm taking it one day at a time. RIP;GARY 🙏🏽💖💝💗💞
@@islandgirl9479 I am so very sorry for your experience, and the pain of someone dying in your arms. Bless your very spirit for your response.
Shila Robbs, great use of literary observation. I believe it's called allegory where the author uses metaphoric examples as away to uncover a greater abstract meaning. Bravo!!!!⚘
Naw..Teacakes older brother who raised him and manages money a bit better and has better communication skills...but ill take Janie's backyard though..movie is so beautiful.
she was pushed out to marry someones grandfather who was gonna die anyway, so she met someone younger someone with aspirations, that mans dream became more important than her. He became verbally and emotionally abusive and he was dying. she needed to be loved and that's where michael ealy comes in. he showed her love real love. i don't see how that makes her slut.
Honestly if you read the book the way she was portrayed in the book is not the way It's portrayed in this movie. In this movie she is miserable, kind of snappy and pathetic in comparison to the Janie in the book. The Janie in the book was much more in tune with things around her and every action with each man was justified.
***** I've read the book not so long ago&naturally I appreciate the way you're putting things CONTEXT here etc. However on the whole do you REALLY think things have changed much for the BETTER in THIS era of "Baby Mama's" and erstwhile "Baby Daddy's" becoming GRANDPARENTS in THEIR 30's!? we running out of Grandparents and greatgrandparents to clean up behind this mess and raise up children into adults....
I dont agree with what her grandma did just Because she seen her kissing a Boy she want to marry her off to somebody way older.I Couldnt Live back In those times
*It really hurt me to my heart when she was asked to say something for the community during the celebration and her Husband put her down in front of all those people saying Mrs. Starks don't know nothing about giving No speech, that he didn't Mary her for that.. How humiliating and degrading that must've been I know the people felt that but I know she felt it even more..*
He had a big ego; He knew she was smart. Didn't want to give her credit. He also believed that he was the only person working. He put the other men down also.
sadly men will beat women for asking for respect and autonomy. Women are made to live a lifestyle serving men quietly and fear freedom and real love and adventure like Nana. She didn't want to live that life, she didn't want Janie to live that life or be with Logan. She did that to herself and Janie for survival. It's no sad that women are doing what it take to survive it's sad that sexism and men make women give up what they want for survival.

Such a classic film! 🙌🏾 Zora Neale Hurston is an extraordinary writer!! I see why Oprah loved this film so much. It's one of Halle and Michael Ealy's best work. Real, raw acting; they poured their souls Into these characters, well done!! 👏🏾👏🏾
True. I hope one day that the books that I've written and publish would make the big screen, only if the good Lord allows it. All I know is that I did my best with all 20 books😇
@@laurahall907 i coulda swore they had town harlots and dryg addicts and women that weren't classy in those days . each era has it own uniquness but that dont make the women better .
I deeply admire how the men carried themselves with dignity class true gentleman no man wearing his pants sagging off his behind and knew how to talk to a woman
Yeah women nowadays don't act with class and dignity anymore. that's why men don't have any respect they behave the way they behave because there's no standards to meet
I'm one of those ppl who rarely watch a movie more then once, but this one, I've watched it about 3x now. Her free spirit reminds me of how I used to be.
Me too I am 39 I am not as free spirited as I use to be, but you better believe I am getting it back. My alcoholic husband passed after 12 years marriage been in a 10 year relationship and I am done with belonging to someone. It's about to be about me all over again and for good this time.
@SARA I'm still free spirited I guess, but I am married and I love my husband. So, even if I had an attraction to a man, I wouldn't act on it. I've never been a cheat, but very flirty. Not so much now.
@@nancybreaux9684 live your best life and never belong to anyone but yourself and Christ. Do what makes you happy, even in marriage, I do. I'm not a cheater, but if I want to go somewhere or do something with my friends or etc..I will
"You kinda got me at yo mercy" If that's not the sexiest thing for a man to say to the woman he has fallen in love with!? He basically tells her that there is no other woman he wants but her, so if she rejects him, he will be left without the comforts of a woman...simply brilliant!
I wish a lot of young females would watch this. Not only does it talk about love. It also shows that you shouldn't care what someone thinks of you. If alot of us did this it would be alot less drama and a lot less fights in the black community. Instead we let words get the best of us. Similar to a situation I had today. Kind of glad I watched this so I wouldn't be holding grudges just by what someone thinks of me.
I most-whole fully watched this, and it was beautiful. The people, the love-black love. The different cultures.. the way race was involved but somehow it wasn't so segregated. The love not only with a couple but a love of self all around. The way halle played this part is so me. The way I love and want to be loved is understood here. And for many of people like you to understand goes to show that I am not insane after all it we both can positively see this movie the same. It gives me confirmation and peace of surpass in my path, journey and life. And I thank you for that. May you are doing well and better than ever. Much love and blessings to you all the way 🖐🏽🤍
I felt a love like this, that’s the only reason why I loved the movie it was so relatable. Sadly the only thing it made me realize was when your truly happy it upsets everyone around you.
Rachele Ray I am exactly the Same and I either meet controling wealthy men or Crazy poor Bad boys. So now I Just remember and smile and enjoy Being happy on my own
The older I get the more I understand the meaning of this novel/ movie. When i was young I totally didn't understand this but the theme of this story is the ability and yearning to be a care free black woman. Black women in society are not really given the option to be care free and light. They are usually bound by circumstance, responsibility and or judgement from others so to be a free and easy black woman is seen as a taboo. You see Janie gets pushback from damn near everyone in the story hence the watching god aimlessly while floating in the water. Its Janie's call to live carefree and break away from all that bounds her.
It was mandatory to read this book while I was in the 11th grade and now I read it once every year. This book and movie is certainly a classic. In my eyes Hurston is legend.
“I didn’t know you was so satisfied with me” She was a Free Spirit and you were the only man who loved her for who she was and let her live her life the way she wanted without trying to tame her.
this movie is very inspiring to me. the first time i saw it, i watched it with my mother before she passed and after i could never find it until now. its like it was meant to be found.
Money is not everything sometimes we just want to hear I love you those words are amazing and to tell us we are special and love us unconditionally that's a rare love to fine when you do never let it go..
This movie always leaves me speechless with nothing but calm, flowing emotions that just radiate through my entire body. As the music plays during the credits, I just can't help but smile and cry at the same time. I resonate with this film, and am lucky to be embarking on life's journey with my "tea cake". This story, its depictions of a reality, leaves my heart full.
I think the whole idea of "watching god" was that she found peace even at the worst times by looking up to him knowing that he has a great deal planned and shes watching god at work.. questioning him, waiting for what is to happen next.. after every time she did something new happened.. Thats what I think anyways..
Jody didn't allow Janie to live. He didn't "see" her for the woman she was....he saw her for the woman he wanted her to be. Some people don't know, & unfortunately won't ever know what love truly endures.
Ego. All those men tried to control rather than love Janie. All except Teacake. A man's ego and pride is a deadly thing in a weak man with low self esteem. He will often try to control women to feign confidence and manhood. Though really a scared little, incompetent boy.
I totally agree with one of the comments below that she was not yearning for materialistic things. She wanted pure love and the ability to have her own voice. Jen was free spirited and just wanted to express herself.. The Mayor was too domineering!
Always thought this movie was about love but it was about self love and self worth, yes she wanted love but had to find it in herself. A lot of woman make the mistake of thinking love is in a man and have many disappointments. This movie is so deep and poetic 🌸
To be free to be who you are and then if you can find someone that you can be free with, someone who allows your soul to fly with them, is a joy everlasting 👏🏾👏🏾
Sooo... after watching Queen and this movie. It's safe to say I'm in my feelings. I've cried through these movies like a baby. And I'm like why? Thinking I need to revisit the make up of my life and figure out if I'm living or existing. Cuz something is up with me Spiritually and emotionally.
Tea Cake was drowning and still managed to save Janie! Now, that’s true love! This entire movie is an example of unconditional, selfless love! Ladies, if you find a Tea Cake, you better keep him! Also, what got me was, how the town discouraged her from running off with her lover! They all assumed he had broken her in the beginning! Which wasn’t the case! Tea Cake was the reason Janie Lived!! Literally!!!!
I hate how everybody act like she's wrong for living her best life. Where's the magic I will want to do all those things she's doing with tea cake, with my man! she was in a verbal Abusive relationship with the older man who tried that control her and put her down; now she's free to live life the best she can and she's getting criticized for it
Janie displays true divine feminine energy. She was rebellious with a cause, freedom! Despite how she was treated, she held her own in her way. Much to be admired.
Finding ur self with the right person is all that matters, I have learned to always make myself and everyone around me happy, am only waiting to fly high now
One of the best black films made and all the actors were good in their roles. Oscars for Halle and possibly TK and husband before TK😊. This film is like the black Gone with the wind.
Life + Love. Two things everyone must learn about... Such a deep story... I was “forced” to watch in school and didn’t get the full meaning back then. Too young to appreciate this great story.
Pardon me but everyone is entitled to their own views and perspections....now yeah I feel like this is about growth and development in life. She grew knowing herself and living the way which was already in her. If it had not been for Teacake to come into her life she might have never let it out. Now, for that she loved him the most. So yes... this also was a love story for me. And I have a Teacake now for six years in my life... and I'm living, loving and happy!!! They're out there trust me!!! 🏌️👌😊
I really hate to say it. But these movies always pointed out how the black men treated their women like the slaves we once were. Sad, but it's the facts of life. The oppressed man became the oppressor of his family
I was introduced to Zora Neale Hurston, through a Chautaqua in Tulsa, Oklahoma. I bought every book that woman wrote. When I went to Florida, to visit an old friend... We went to Eatonville. This is the "history" that people need to learn and love about the people who learned the value of more than money and community.
***** Don't forget his old bird chest, those jagged elbows & knees sharp enough to puncture a hole in somebody ... Breath? Lol ... that funky musty body odor ... ~whew~
I thought the purpose of marrying an great granpa was so that you wouldnt have to work and be set in life but she was still breaking her back everyday smdh
That will be me when I lose 100 pounds! Not only that, but my Sweetie's slightly elder sis maybe! 😂😂😂😂😂 People who never met my only Pumpkin, be like: Person A: Wow, you're brother's cute! Me: Bless your very spirit, but that is my son! ☺ My Son: 😠 😂😂😂😂😂 For the record, I am 43 and he is turning 16. I almost wrote 44 for my age and make myself 8 months elder than I actually am! 😁😂😂😂😂😂
I loved this movie. I grew up hearing what will the neighbors think? It's taken me 60 years to realize I don't care what others think. Is there life ever after? I don't know. THIS is the only life I'm sure of. Live, love, always be kind. Above all else, enjoy the beauty that every day brings. Look for it. I promise you, you'll find it! Going to bed with a smile. Thank you for this little gem of a movie.
@@gothy9354 The movie gets some key things wrong, like the fact that Teacake has a dark skinned man in the book, and that's a major part of why people thought Janie was too good for him.
“Cut up them seed potatoes, cut that rut-bleed him good, I want chops for dinner”.....I would’ve ran off with starks too😭😭 .....love this movie and tea cake! #discoveringtruelove
Why can't we just ask each other the simplest question before jumping into relationship, that could save and make many relationships? It is automatic assumption that the woman wants pretty things or materials and the man to be "MAN" or successful, even though those things are great, not everyone is looking just that. Tea Cake was the dream minus his drinking and catching rabies ... he felt a lesser of a man just because he didn't have as much as she did and he thought if he could provide her with such materials that she will be more happier and likely to stay with him, ... all she wanted was to be loved, happy, and free. In all honesty, I can easily say that is all men or women want in life. We can't take anything else with us after life on Earth, but it sure does feel amazing to have been truly happy, loved, and free regardless.
I love this movie. 30 minutes in and I see myself in janey. I hated the mayor. He let the fame and power get to his head. Janey is us all unfortunately. I've had that relationship that stifles you. You have no voice. No dreams or hopes. You're an invisible nobody. It's no joy. No love or happiness just a routine. I've had that tea cake love too. Like hers it didnt last long. It seems like that love doesnt last long. I hope to find it again God willing.
Freedom of love, knowledge of self, pure intentions, accepting change, allowing change to change you, learning to forgive, loving love & not allowing others opinion to define you! I love this wonderful masterpiece of a movie! Thanks immensely Zora ~ Got to Love Love!!! I love it... it feels good to feel good! You should try happiness for yourself! It feels amazing! Freedom of Love

Absolutely right. It was a beautiful thing. He saw her. Not what he could mold her into.

All in all, such an amazing movie.

u have a point, however the movie is about letting ppl kno about how it was back in that time.
this is a really gooooddddd movie!
yeah, it's a bunch of Janie's now living that freedom with section 8 & kids who have no clue what a mundane comfy life looks or feel like because their neighborhoods have morphed into hoods/ghetto
What About: Janie was married though (in the book also to tea cake) and didn’t have any kids. Living outside of society is not the same as living at the bottom of society.
They focus on the title because they wants to know what it means. That is what people do with any movie.
The thing I really like about this movie is how back then black people were able to unify and build towns and economically unify without any handouts or reliance from anybody else. What happened
yeah , what the hell happened?
What happened is that, they had no other choice. Once they made welfare etc it was the easy way out but the most detrimental.

There are loving ones out there, I just met the wrong ones!

she was pushed out to marry someones grandfather who was gonna die anyway, so she met someone younger someone with aspirations, that mans dream became more important than her. He became verbally and emotionally abusive and he was dying. she needed to be loved and that's where michael ealy comes in. he showed her love real love. i don't see how that makes her slut.
Exactly
Honestly if you read the book the way she was portrayed in the book is not the way It's portrayed in this movie. In this movie she is miserable, kind of snappy and pathetic in comparison to the Janie in the book. The Janie in the book was much more in tune with things around her and every action with each man was justified.

Sadly most women are afraid to live and love without apology, freedom to bare your soul to someone and experience the divine feeling of true love.
sadly men will beat women for asking for respect and autonomy.

Right
I most-whole fully watched this, and it was beautiful.

E E story of my life
The older I get the more I understand the meaning of this novel/ movie.
Jake Ross no it's not.
Black men aren't either.

Also, what got me was, how the town discouraged her from running off with her lover! They all assumed he had broken her in the beginning! Which wasn’t the case! Tea Cake was the reason Janie Lived!! Literally!!!!
Wish they would've left and avoided the storm. Then Tea Cake could've lived. And Janie would've been happy for a lifetime.

“Cut up them seed potatoes, cut that rut-bleed him good, I want chops for dinner”.....I would’ve ran off with starks too😭😭 .....love this movie and tea cake! #discoveringtruelove

I caught that too. I was DIEING!
Love it, agree
EDEN Kassa ..I would love to meet a beautiful woman like you .loom me up on Fb Tony Sleet .Would love to meet you .yiur words are incredible.
Very well said and put‼️ I appreciate that's, If'n's nobody else does ‼️💙🙋🏻♀️🤗😉.
Ms. Janie was like the piano to her first husband, something to look at but Tea Cake showed her how to enjoy it and play it.
that old man is made for her grandmother
Legend of a Reverse Cowgirl rite lol
Instead of ruby dees character marrying the old man she forced Jamie( Hallie berry) marry him.
I love this movie. Halle and the cast did a really great job.
Especially when she cried after shooting TK, the depth of voice was moving
I love this movie. 30 minutes in and I see myself in janey. I hated the mayor. He let the fame and power get to his head. Janey is us all unfortunately. I've had that relationship that stifles you. You have no voice. No dreams or hopes. You're an invisible nobody. It's no joy. No love or happiness just a routine. I've had that tea cake love too. Like hers it didnt last long. It seems like that love doesnt last long. I hope to find it again God willing.
Im
Me too God willing!
