She REALLY needed a better vehicle AFTER "Lady" . This , is NOT it. What she SHOULD have done was taken a smaller role in a BETTER movie. Back in the 90's I was having problems at home and desperately wanting to leave. I was sewing garments up like crazy because it was cheaper to make them and then took this passion to the Fashion Institute of Technology for a degree in pattern making. Do You Know Where You Are Going was my theme song! It helped me through some tough times.

Although this was an excellent film and one of my favorites. He couldn't see her vision, but wanted her to see his. She returned to him in the end, but your passion just doesn't disappear overnight. We as women make many sacrifices for love and our families. Smh
I agree. People who don't have the anointing of vision want it so the try to take it from those who do. I think it's try in all kinds of relationships. The anointed give up their vision to others and don't fullfil their destiny and as time goes on regret and anger sets in and relationships end Not always but I'd bet more than we think, and who gives up to their vision? Women.
Na Na Million I don’t think he was blind to her vision. He didn’t like her being treated like a ”thing” and not a human. Just like the old Black woman lady he wanted as a background scene. The people around her were PHONY. Perkins said he collected inanimate objects called woman. Trying to kill her boyfriend is a good reason for him not to understand. Sometimes people from to different worlds need time to find their place and grow together. This is what a two hour movie reflecting the attitudes of the time.

DIANA, never, really, got paid, what she deserved. That Mahoney, was an Oscar winning Movie. I understand why, she went back to her broke, targeted black man. The story of our life. That was a real move of a black women!
A wonderful classic. I saw it when it first came out. I am a dress designer and a seamstress and I can identify with her struggle and the choices you have to make in order to pay the price if you want success and/or love.
This woman was not very beautiful, when she 1st got starred. But she always had charisma, talent, Stardom, believing in herself. She was like wine. She got better, with time. Defiant age!

What a beautiful movie and it was made in time when African Americans didn't have star power, but Ms Ross help change all that for all of us as people of color.
Myron Martin , Not true...Blaxploitation movies started in 1970. Say what you want but those people got paid and created stars like Pam Grier and Richard Roundtree, Shaft, Flip Wilson, Richard Pryor. Diana did a lot of tv and film in those days, but never blaxploitation ghetto shit..
Please don't forget about Hattie McDaniel the first African American Woman to win an Oscar in 1939 for Gone With The Wind, Sidney Poitier, the first African American Man to win an Oscar for Lilies of the Field in 1964, and let's not also forget Dorothy Dandridge, Harry Belafonte and Sammy Davis Jr., just to name a few.

Ya this movie, like "LOve Is A Many Spenored Thing", has just one beautiful son g that makes up the entirety of the movie's music. That was another nice male-female relationship movie that ended badly for the male.
I see Diana Ross in a totally different light... i realize it’s more to a person than a caricature of a person thru lenses of other people (unauthorized bio’s and Dreamgirls etc) She is a worthy actress way more than a diva she has a lot of realness. Or a Oscar award winning Range ! The unemployment office scene made me. Know it she actually knocked it out of the park and the project photo shoot scene too! I have a new Respect for the boss! I can add this to one of my favorite movies list and DAMN ME FOR NOT SEEING IT SOONER!!
All 3 men wanted to OWN her. Billy Dee needed her for her light and energy to build his dreams. The photographer wanted to keep her like a doll for only him. The rich guy wanted to own her life her talent her beauty.. Not one of them wanted to be there for her. Its amazing how ppl look at your light like a firefly lightening bug. And want to capture it for themselves. They don't want you OWNING YOUR OWN LIGHT you were born with.
The time when hair wasn't absolutely natural but it was her own!! Back in the 1980's well at least the last of the 70's because I did too. My Senior picture was my own hair. even Janet Jackson wore her real hair in those times. This was before that big hair Diana wore. A whole new fashion for her and Janet. Anyway this is a beautiful classic. Thanks for the post.
Diana Ross is the QUEEN OF WIGS and hair pieces . And this is a movie about glamour… black women with means wore wigs . My momma had the coolie hair down to her butt .. but she still wore wigs .
I was in the 5th grade when my Mommy took me and my cousins to see this movie I ❤ it just like when she took me to see Lady Sings the Blues i was in awe of Diana Ross acting skills and BEAUTY when she modeled all those beautiful outfits BRAVO Ms. Ross 👏🏼👏🏼
Lol.......same here; such a beautiful memory and movie....same age I saw this.. First movie my mother took me to...Lady Sings the Blues and Superfly TNT.....at Sutter Movie house Brooklyn; ..just got here from Jamaica! Wow.
I was nine years old when this movie came out in 1975 and still watching it in 2019. Diana Ross is fabulous. I wonder if she used the name Tracy, because of her daughter Tracey Ellis Ross having that name.
As a Latino/Black Man, I have always enjoyed Black entertainers looking glamorous and successful (albeit the drama that's part of the story). And specially back in the 70's, when HARDLY any Latinos were seeing on mainstream media playing dignified roles, at least it was comforting to see that part of my heritage had some representation.
Latino is Hispanic sir or ma'am it is ok to let others express thierselves as we see fit. Carry on.....We are in correction from time to time. True African Americans, Hispanics and other minorities were all to well typed-cast in Hollywood plus other venues for decades. As the help or criminals or to be made fun. That is why some of our people ventured to places in European countries were it was more freedom of expression to the craft and less oppression in the U.S. Is was for men and women in sports like basketball, actors, artists, philosophers, entertainers and so forth. Knowing your forth and maintain is successful.
I went to see this in the theatres when it opened in Toronto with my first bf . Loved it …..Diana was our / my first glamour diva artist followed from that day on . The theme song always gets me back to those carefree days myself . And the line In the picture : “ success is nothing if u have no one to share it with “ has over all the years at times popped into my mind . Watching this now in 2024 for the first time since all those years ago . Sweet memories , poignant remembrances of days gone by .
Congratulations to Barry Gordy, the founder of Motown as well as its sound, on his Kennedy center honor. We must recognize the effect of his music during the Civil Rights Era. Imagine this country without it. I thank you for directing this masterpiece 💜
I could watch this amazingly talented beautiful soul all day!! She didn't make near enough movies... Next I'm off to "Lady sings the blues"...always a must see!! 💖💖💖💖💖
38:15 The moment she pins Brian’s dreams over her own and the song plays. It broke a piece of my heart. To think of all the people who gave up on their dreams.
I read that she and Flo Ballard had a phone conversation before Flo's death and this film was mentioned. Flo supposedly told her that she liked the movie but felt the end was unrealistic. Said there was NO WAY Tracey would have seen the world and traded that life to move back to the hood. I'm with Flo. LOL!
But here is the reality......that everyone isn't willing to sell their " Body " for fame......yes; maybe 98% of the population....some ppl have ethics!

When I was in Rome ,I was determined to have my picture taken at that fountain she was pushed into I mentioned it to my driver,he was unfamiliar with the film and didnt know the fountain. He dropped us off to shop, and when he picked us up,he told us he had researched and found the fountain. I was so happy, and I got my pic, funny thing is I didnt realize until I watched the movie AFTER returning home, that i had possed like T.Chambers ,but i was holding my umbrella instead of a fur muff.As we were about to pull off ,I smiled when I saw a van pull up to the same fountain and a Black woman emerged smiling for her own photo.

ladylequvia7 ...Didn't you read the opening and closing credits?
@@brucescott4261 At the time I wrote my comment here (3 years ago) was when I read she designed her clothes for the film.
You can watch any movie regardless of when it was made.
This is one of my favorite movies as well as Lady sings the blues.
YES - love this movie and can't wait to finish watching it tomorrow night; just finished Lady Sings the Blues, and love the chemistry between Ross & Williams - two top notch movies!!!
Both Bomb movies ❤
No wonder her daughter Tracy can act...Diana's acting skills are amazing 🔥
Mahogany, Diana and Billy Dee one more excellent movie. I could watch forever.🌹I love All Diana movies, singing, modeling and will always be one more fan.loving 4ever🌹
This came out when I was in 8tg grade.....
That creme suit with the coat and hat were everyyyyything!
MS Ross was the boss even then!💜💜💜
Diana is so beautiful. Those eyes!!
Not beautiful as yours 😍💕😘😘😘
True story
uniqua Jones buggy eyes with makeup honey...🙄😆
Diana is just drop dead gorgeous.
uniqua Jones Billy dee is extreme gorgeous. look at his eyes asxwell to his art, he's amazing.
I haven't seen this or heard the theme song since 1975, now I've got goosebumps-- the incomparable Diana Ross.
DIANA, never, really, got paid, what she deserved. That Mahoney, was an Oscar winning Movie. I understand why,
she went back to her broke, targeted black man. The story of our life. That was a real move of a black women!
At 57yrs old i have traveling the World. Their is nothing more beautiful than a Black Sister. Mahogany is lovely. Thank you Ms. Ross.
I wish Diana will do one more Glamorous movie.
“It couldn’t be worse than coming home to some jackass blowing at me with a bullhorn.” I love Tracey 😂
That line cracked me up!!!

Yes! You’re lovely. Keep on shining.
A wonderful classic. I saw it when it first came out. I am a dress designer and a seamstress and I can identify with her struggle and the choices you have to make in order to pay the price if you want success and/or love.
AMEN!!!!
Love this film. Diana Ross can do it all, sing, act and to top it all, she’s breathtakingly gorgeous.
This movie is like pure art in motion.....from a deep perspective😉
Ooooh yessssss....
I l9ve ne,some diane
This woman was not very beautiful, when she 1st got starred. But she always had charisma, talent, Stardom, believing in herself. She was like wine. She got better, with time. Defiant age!
Her BEAUTY was at it's apex in this movie.
Agreed! She was 31 when she made this movie and her skin was flawless and smooth. Not to mention that beautiful skin tone.
Ahmad2423 Still is. Just saw her Dimond Jubilee 75th Birthday 2019 couple minutes before I watched this movie Still apex.....
@@alyasa5352 There's some truth to that but in this movie during this particular Era... She was absolutely GORGEOUS&Sexy!
@@Perivale And a mother of two girls! Rhonda & Tracee. I just watch this today Dec 6, 2020 but in some part of my head, i think i've seen it when i was a teen. Diana was & still is phenomenal! Love her! :)
True beauty too, not with all of those lip fillers, butt injections, breast augmentations either!
Audio Visual Proof yes, and Diana worked with Sammy Davis.
@@karendalsadik7119 I'm going to look up their movie biographies and seek them out. By the way, I'm replying under my other RUclips channel because those behind Google and RUclips blocked my other channel and I can no longer post comments to all RUclips videos including my video uploads. Been calling Google and RUclips out and accusing them of stealing my ad revenue and altering ad revenue settings to my channel so I can only earn the bare minimum. Audio Visual Proof II that sucks! Sorry to hear that. Every one is having trouble. I’ve only got 8 followers so I have a long way to go😊😃BTW I don’t mean SDJr & Ms Ross on the big screen. He was in her show.
I watch this movie quite often. It"s a classic and an inspiration to one's life dreams.
Memorable moments never again to be repeated. Exactly what we need .
I love this Movie... Diana Ross pave the way for singers to act
Not true at all.Singing and acting always went together.Vaudeville and Broadway
This movie is a "Class" I could identify even though Im Mexican American, it hits us all in the heart and soul!. Life is about good change, equality and humanity. I love this movie. Diana Ross, Billy Dee Williams and Barry Gordy were a wonderful team!!
Me and Billy Dee... we're the only team.
equality???!!! this movie is very misogynistic!

Ya this movie, like "LOve Is A Many Spenored Thing", has just one beautiful son g that makes up the entirety of the movie's music. That was another nice male-female relationship movie that ended badly for the male.
Yes for sure!
This was one of my mother's favorite movies and I have amazing memories when I see this movie. 🥰
Gives me goosebumps all over ..but most of all ..touches my soul.
The one and only Diana Ross
Just in time. Needed a good movie and a good cry. Thank you so much for posting. My mom always talked of this movie. I really needed this😢 thank you
@ Ms. Shay...when I need inspiration...this is my go to feel good movie...
Love this movie! I love Diana Ross and Billy Dee acting together! A true romantic movie
Billy Dee... All that swagg just for me.
I can add this to one of my favorite movies list and DAMN ME FOR NOT SEEING IT SOONER!!
wait until you find "out of darkness" -- I find that to be Diana's finest movie.
Do you really believe she wore her own hair throughout the entire movie?
Wow.
I FINALLY found the movie my mom named me after (mahogany). I've been looking for it forever. My mom is a huge Diana Ross and Billy Dee Williams fan
Omg, the fashion and beauty of this movie is unmatched.
I was nine years old when this movie came out in 1975 and still watching it in 2019. Diana Ross is fabulous. I wonder if she used the name Tracy, because of her daughter Tracey Ellis Ross having that name.
THIS IS A GREAT MOVIE!!! I REALLY FELL IN LOVE WITH THIS POWERFUL MOVIE IN THE 70'S.
Yeah, sadly....too many Latinos DENY their African ancestry, well...I don't =)
Donald Trump is a Ghetto trick whatever - we get what he mean so
Latino is Hispanic sir or ma'am it is ok to let others express thierselves as we see fit.
I wasn't even born in 1975 but her music stays in my heart cause she's 1 of my dad's favorites & has become mine too. I love Diana Ross 💕
One of my favorite movies. Beautiful actress, handsome love interest, beautiful music and romantic.
Yessssss!

Congratulations to Barry Gordy, the founder of Motown as well as its sound, on his Kennedy center honor. We must recognize the effect of his music during the Civil Rights Era. Imagine this country without it. I thank you for directing this masterpiece 💜

LOL!
Real love can't be bought

When I was in Rome ,I was determined to have my picture taken at that fountain she was pushed into
I mentioned it to my driver,he was unfamiliar with the film and didnt know the fountain.
Such a wonderfully cute story
