- This uncommon set is based on a Dynatron Gypsy. However there is no mention of Dynatron anywhere on the PCB (unlike the Gypsy) so it may be a use of end of the line Gypsy chassis and a batch of umarked PCBs were produced to use up the metal works. Or something. Strange one. The Convair badge may be mis-leading but it's almost certainly unconnected with the VEF/Convair Spidola radios. Thanks to Paul for spotting it / codeeze
Very interesting, reminds me of when car manufacturers like VW Seat Audi use the same chassis with a different body , sometimes the engines are stamped different to the badge , least Dynatron removed their badge , best regards Shaun
Hi Shaun, it's like Dynatron licenced some pcbs out to someone, quite odd.
Its a little gem that one ❤
It is Brett, better to look at than it performs though
Dynatron were taken over by Ekco in1955. Ekco then were subsumed by Pye in 1960 who, in turn, were absorbed by Philips in the late 60s. he Dynatron name carried on as a 'luxury' badge for quite a long time. Interestingly, the Hacker brothers did a fair bit of design work for Dynatron in the 50s.
Hi, thanks but not quite. Ekco merged with Pye, Pye were already part owned by Philips. Roberts Radio now own the Dynatron name.
Definitely Need Those Caps Replaceing Andrew If It Gives You Trouble Down The Line You Can Always Zap Those AF117s Very Nice Looking Set Thanks For Uploading Regards mike.
Those Arthur Dalys have to go, awful things. I would like some nice blue heatshrink to sort of recreate the look on Hacker amps though.
Plenty to get on with then, Andy...looking forwards to the progress you make.
Thanks Theo, yes lots of things to tidy up
Loved the old pictures!
Don’t imagine it was a kitset, but wonder as our “Realistic” turned out to be a Perdio PR25 that was marketed in kit form.
No, too good to be a kit set but it may have been a part assembled kit. Who knows!!
Nice little set, hopefully it will be a quick fix!
Aaaahh....,it wasn't Dom!!
Maybe a John Lewis or coop brand from long ago? The AF117 transistors legs are very long, maybe just tacked in to see if it worked before going back and cropping them. Either that or he wanted to creat an internal aerial! Peter
That radio is a Mystery, the output transistors look almost russian in design.
But the components look normal to what was used in dynatron / hacker and other radios.
An early version of the gypsy but under a different name so dynatron could sell it.
Sorry i'm mentally jibbering lol.
You could buy that output package through mail order. I can imagine a lot of radios being made in sheds on and the kitchen table once transisititatrs became more affordable.
Hi Andrew. I have a very similar set to this with the same case, different grille but badged as Dynatron. I showed it near to the end of this video ruclips.net/video/ILOaXezyV_0/видео.html. It also has the Ediswan transistors but doesn’t work due to bad output transistors. Mine has a full Ediswan line up from memory and no AF117’s. I was going to convert it over to OC91’s but was unsure of the biasing as the resistors in the 2 sets are different. If you need to know where any wires go then I can send you pictures. Good luck with it as they are nice little sets. Cheers Graham
Oh yes I remember that, a Gypsy but not quite. That's a very interesting version, looks like someone had sprayed the grille but then again why would they?!
