- The Core 2 Duo has had it's day.
But with the help of a classic Radeon, it sure can kick ass.
In Tonights episode of Green Ham Gaming,
we take a look at how a Dell Precision T3400 Workstation can be
transformed into a gaming machine with the addition of a Radeon 5870 1GB.
It utilises the Conroe Core 2 Duo E6400 at 2.4GHz in the 775 Socket.
This chip offers similar performance to the E6300 or Athlon X2 5000+
We Try the machine out with Classics such as
Fallout 3, Left 4 Dead, Dead Island and Skyrim.
The machine is also pushed hard, under the pressure of newer titles such as,
GTA V, Fallout 4, Firewatch and Counter-Strike Global Offensive or CS:GO.
So get yourself a beverage and relax, and join us as we explore the Core 2 Duo's potential.
who wouldve known that shining a projector onto a PC with commercials could make such a nice effect
I know right
You are literally the only channel I like and share videos for. Your writing, editing and music choices are absolutely sublime. Well done to you Sir!
Your channel is my absolute favorite. You set the bar for good budget gaming and have fun while doing it. Keep up the good work man
the intro was awesome but a video without a cig isn't a ghgtv
+1
cigarettes are bad for you m8
+1
+Bruno Opertti I think he has listened to the moralists cry.
+Daniel Perkins fuck off
dissapointed there was no cigerates, unsub
+Lars Ferrari Yeah his components will smell pretty funny ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)
+SOHAIL KHAN I wouldn't worry, my Dreamcast smokes dime a dozen.
+SOHAIL KHAN same here
literally unwatchable
+Lars Ferrari he really shouldnt. I mean maybe not ALL the time but it`s OK from time to time. And if some people are stupid enough to say he condones smoking when he does that they should really hang themselves :D.
Every time one of your new videos comes out I feel compelled to go watch all of them because I genuinely love your content. Keep up the good work, Tim. RUclips needs more genuinely passionate people like you.
This is my string of emotions when GHG uploads a new video
☺ - I see a video is uploaded
😄 - I see it's a GHG video
😲 - I forget my tea/beer
😊 - I have tea/beer
😐 - I watch the video
😯 - I see there's only a few seconds left of the video
😢 - The video ends
😐 - I watch my subscription feed like a hawk.
And that pretty much repeats over and over.
+Pyn TheFox shit furries have invaded Green Ham Gaming.
+RandomQuentin Come at me bro ( :
RandomQuentin I'm a shit furry and i hate people.
Iris J Good for you ( :
Pyn TheFox I'll beat that smile off yer face.
Man, I even know the music changes from memory. SOOOO FUCKING GOOD!
Wow man, I can tell you put A LOT of work into this vid. Cheers
I'm a big fan of retro PCs and your vids have brought me so much fun! Thanks for making these interesting videos. The fun of making use of second hand PC parts is absolutely expressed in you videos!Keep it up bro.
This video answers a lot of my question regarding the capability of LGA 775 Dual cores. Because I still have the same dreadful processor, it's good to know that it still can play modern games at acceptable performance with the help of a powerful AMD Graphics card. On the other hand, a Core 2 Quad would be a great alternative for this cpu since it has 4 working threads for modern stressful apps.
From the bottom of my gaming heart, I thank you bro!
+joseph971 buy nVidia, it works lot better with weaker CPUs. Radeon need strong CPU to really get going. You have those kind of videos all over RUclips, dont trust me on word, look for yourself.
The projector in this added such a nice touch, I love your videos man.
You can bash on PC's all you want but you can never disagree that DELL always made the most simply beautiful cases...
Haha... no.
zpajdapewgh :(
Doge625 I agree! About 3+ years ago they had some really good looking cases!
Squidink R/C :D
Squidink R/C Their dell dimension xps gen 4 cases are beautiful!
id say swap a core 2 quad into this and check back at the greenmarks!
agreed
+The Immortal Sector Q9550 would make it fly.
yeah
+e30TimS Q6600 with OC ;)
+e30TimS Q6600 @ 3.0GHz :P
*10 years later:
ghg makes a video about the 4790k
Well, I guess he did make that video on the first gen i7
You're videos are awesome man, you've got a style and a calm that I've never seen before, your voice is awesome and relaxing, soo keep going man!
Can't get enough of your videos. they always have a nostalgic feeling ;w;
I gotta say, that video was one of the most interesting and entertaining ghg videos I've ever seen. I don't know if it was the editing or your voice I don't know. but I really loved this one.
The irony of talking about good games whilst playing sonic 3d music in the background.
+CrAzYgUy I knew it I thought i was the only noticing it man that game is way old i was a kid back then oh man good times gooood times
You put a lot of effort in your videos and they keep getting better! Keep up man!
did you take film school? because your editing is fantastic
I have an old Dell Quad Core that I bought new years ago. I was debating on whether or not to purchase an XboxOne or PS4 to play Fallout on when I came across your channel a few months back... I decided to follow your lead and upgrade my video card and max out my RAM and now I can enjoy that game and so many more for less than a quarter of the price I would have. Thank you!
Why is this channel so good
Another great vid man always makes me want to build something like this...for now I'll live vicariously through you.
I like the projector backdrops
Your production quality has improved a lot over the past few months!
geez this channel grew fast, I remember when you were at 10k xD
I remember 5K and a tiny bit over 1,000.
My main rig is an upgraded Optiplex 330, with 4GB ram, a core2duo e6850 and a geforce 9400GT. Also, for all I care you could read the ingredients to your cereal, i just love listening to your smooth voice.
I really like the core2duo. I think as long as long as you have reasonable expectations such as web browsing, listening to music, some light photo editing, etc, I think this processor shines but if you are someone who must edit 4K videos, or want to play the latest games on max settings you should look elsewhere. The core2duo has been out for some time now and to see it still handle things as well as it does, it impresses me. It proves that you don't always need the latest computer to do what you want to do. Im using my late 2009 white macbook and it has a core2duo clocked at 2.26 GHz and it handles what I want to do just fine. The only time I notice a ton of lag is when I watch a youtube video at 1080p 60FPS.
Yeah, a game in 720p still seems smooth. Just like my console.
Yeah, a game in 720p still seems smooth. Just like my console.
Playing on GMAX4500 and Core 2 Duo E7400
Comment Commenter Nice how does it work for you? Im using my mid 2009 13 inch macbook pro with a core2duo and still loving it(:
does fine. run windows 7 32-bit well and can easily do the 64-bit versions but our PC only has 4GB of Ram so its obsolete to install a 64-bit OS.
I also game on it and runs most 2d games 30fps one 768P fine and Indie 3D games on 15-ish fps on low.
Pretty good CPU for standard workloads i would say and a Core 2 Quad will be even better.
I love re-purposing old office PCs like this one. Amazing what they can still do
Have you tried overclocking that core 2 duo through a bsel tape mod or just plain setfsb?
depends what the motherboard supports FSB wise, i at the moment have a Dell E520 which takes at max a 1066fsb cpu so i have a Q6600 in it. if i use set FSB and try and change anything even by 1 mhz its an instant lockup. the only real way to get more performance is to swap the Q6600 out for a QX6700 and use throttlestop to up the multiplier which is something you cant do with the locked Q6600.
I love this video especially the intro, it's very well constructed, keep up the good work TJ :)
I would much prefer to wait that Little bit longer to have a well polished video, than wait for less time and have a less well polished video!
Looking forward to your future videos keep it up :)
I still have and use my good ol' E4400, coupled with a Radeon 4830. I even did a video about it :D
Imran Isak I already watched and subbed to you😀 I also made a video on my core 2 duo rig check it out and do subscribe bro
editing and shots are immaculate as usual.
I never noticed until recently, but the Wii had an ATI logo in it.
+Wyatt James same!
+Wyatt James So did the gamecube
ihave7sacks Huh. Never actually owned a GC, this is pretty neat.
***** Pretty sure that's true.
+'Murrican Oil There is. Both of them say "Graphics by ATI"
This video inspired me to build an oldschool machine for daily business, which would also be able for light gaming. The specs are: Fujitsu-Siemens Esprimo P5925, be quiet 350 W, Core 2 Duo E 8500, 4 Gigs DDR2 PC 5300, Radeon 7770 1 GB DDR5, 500 GB SSD and 250 WD Caviar blue. Nice little and silent machine which can play CSGO at 50 fps 1080p and the Command & Conquer games. Thank you Tim for this video.
next video:
"can a core 2 duo be installed on a dreamcast?"
+Hayden Onion Aren't I mature, mom?
YES! You used the Doom intro! You have no idea how excited I actually was when I saw it. ( It was awesome, btw.)
Still waiting on the Dreamcast vid.
same
Guess we are still waiting lol
I thought it was a joke.
Your videos have that weirdly 90s style and character. I really enjoy watching them
Dreamcast hype!
I can't even remember what this comment was related to, but man.
Still here 6 years later, coming back to Green Ham Gaming.
OMG! I need more!!! The intro was just AMAZING man!
none of your electronics are gonna get cancer :(
Easily the most impressive ghg video yet. Good job!
i love the content on this channel too bad there is no cigarette
I got so impatient waiting for a new video that I watched this a few times in a row. Worth it.
*LONG LIVE THE CORE TWO DUO!*
yes
That's some top-notch editing there, well done.
put a core2 quad q6600 in there and see how it goes with gta 5 the extra 2 cores should help abit
+Funk Doo This. I'd like to see what happens when you upgrade to q6600. Can be had for $15-30.
+Funk Doo Q8300 is better if he is not OCing.
who cares about the model lol a 6600 will do and there cheaper and easier to get just to see what a extra 2 core do for the pc
+Funk Doo Yeah, gotta agree that a Q6600 would definitely be a nice addition to that machine. I have an older HP office machine I upgraded for use as our HTPC machine. I put a Q6600 in it, used a BSEL mod to OC it to 3.0Ghz from the stock 2.4Ghz, 4GB DDR2 800Mhz, and a Radeon HD 6570. The machine will only fit low profile GPU's, so options were limited, but while I wasn't aiming to build a gaming machine, it handles a lot of titles very well, albeit with some settings turned down a bit.
You are succeeding into making awesome videos with older hardware. I really have to give you kudos for that. Stay awesome! :D
Im building a gaming rig with HD 4870 1G( $39 ) and a Core2 Duo E7500($3.12) from eBay.
if I got a beer for every video I watched I'd die of liver failure
Try tea instead maybe?
My secondary rig still has an e7400 and a 650ti boost
+Felix Mustermann I always try to make sure my rig can keep up with the latest games, but if I'm completely honest with myself it doesn't really make a difference for me as long as I can play CSGO xD
Great video again! They just keep getting better and your fanbase keeps getting bigger. I'm so hyped for the Dreamcast video, I audibly squeaked from excitement when you made the announcement.
Also, bring back the Phish! They've also got some great Phish chip tunes on RUclips if that's more suitable for the videos.
did you run out of cigarrettes?
ahahahjaha this was g00d
GO GHG!. Great Videos!. Awesome music choice with this one. Really brings us back to the old times. Keep rolling as always ya?. Cheers!.
please mix/level your audio more properly, and don't raise it to as high of a volume in the b roll sections that lack v/o.
I freaking love green hams videos.
You are great with old stuffs , Keep up the good work.
Fantastic opening scene and use of the projector!
That Daytona music, remember being at the arcade and hearing this non stop.
Love what u did with the projector. Also I found canis canem edit today!
worlds most underrated youtuber strikes again. amazing videos keep it up
I subscribed to this channel when it only had around 3-4k subscribers and not it has reached 80K.
Pretty darn awesome.
One of my favorite Tech Channel's
damn that projector lighting is so cool.
Man I love these old videos. Helped inspire me to build computers! Also, on the topic of core 2 duos... (This isn't my main rig but it's a nice LAN PC)
I got an old inspiron 530 from a buddy of mine with a bunch of tobacco gunk stuck inside from previous owner. It was so dirty and dusty that I had to spray the CPU heatsink with a hose, and even then it wasn't completely clean, and the case was dusty as hell. Later on, my sister got a better GPU so I got her old R7 250 and I put it in the inspiron to give it some power. Shortly there after, I bought an E8400 for $10 CAN and that helped a lot. Now it's basically my GTA / LAN party PC. I also got an epic gamer RGB fan. To get the RGB to turn on, I had to mod the PSU to add a molex connector and then it worked flawlessly. Finally, i cut a hole in the side panel and put in some plexiglass so it looks great. So yeah, thanks GHG for pushing me to do that.
I doubt anyone will read this in full, but if you do, thanks!
Wonderful Tim. At the moment I'm propping my keyboard up with a E2140, and sadly my water pump has died on my main gaming rig, so im watching your videos on an old Pentium 4, gotta love that 360p frame skip!
I have very very fond memories of the DreamCast. It was amazing, you could add more "visual data memory" to the thing and everything!
Just an observation I made during the video, I though the audio of your voice was a bit too low compared to the music, but other than that I love it and I love your content.
that intro... seriously i just discovered this channel and i fucking love it
i hate that your videos arent long enough for me to enjoy a beer or some tea. love your content
I really liked the intro! Nice work!
I loved the Daytona USA music. It reminded me of my Sega Saturn days.
like your projects.you should do videos on regular basis.i am a fan of your videos and always wait for your new uploads.keep it up.
The quality of his videos has gone up quite a bit lately, but not too much he still has the same style. I don't know about you guys but I like it.
I wouldn't use one to game, but I find that a core 2 duo paired with an SSD can fly through most basic tasks. For web browsing and office work they are still perfectly serviceable, and still widely used here in England.
I loved the music in this episode. It's so 90s
I love this channel... makes you look at old tech and try to revive it, I've just taken a old Toshiba Satellite Pro C850 Laptop (yes i know it's not a desktop) with a celeron B820 1.7ghz upgraded it to a (eBay) intel quad core 2710QE 2.1ghz turbo clock 3.0ghz, 8 gig ram, running a beast eGpu adapter with a HD5870, i can now run most AAA titles with no problems
before someone goes you could of built a desktop..
ive owned the laptop now for 5 years,
4 gig ram stick came out of a mates Hp Pavilion that blew up
$20 for the cpu
$50 for the eGpu adapter from china
$30 for a second hand 700watt power supply
$45 for the 5870
So for $145 AUD i have a nice little gaming rig
I love how you edit your video's. great work Bro!
Man you've exploded since I first subscribed - I think you had like 110 subscribers when I found your Optiplex boy to man video
I still have two Core 2 Duo machines (one operational, one backup) for 2000s games before 2010. Soon I'll be adding the XFX 5450 to it so I can play 3D games. It came with only on board graphics, but I added a FireMV 2250 so I can capture it via s-video
Congrats on 100k!
I'm more of a coffee guy but fuck it, I'll take a beer instead.
Fantastic episode! Awesome intro!
YAY another gaming rig, dude you deserve to be way more huge
The soundtrack is epic everytime on every vídeo.
Jesus the 90s music and lighting lol its great
I still rock a Q6700 with a GTX 460 1Gb as my main machine for 5 years now, plays the games I want pretty well. In fact, I was using the stock intel cooler until yesterday, installed a nice silent cooler, feels like a brand new machine!
I was used to wearing headphones while gaming to avoid the noise.
Thought about buying a cheap Q9650 or trying the Xeon LGA 771 mod, but only if it was for like 10-20€. People ask for crazy amounts of money for these processors in my opinion, so not worth it. The biggest problem I feel, is actually the motherboard only supports 4Gb of RAM, which will be a bigger and bigger problem.
To be honest I'm itching to rebuild in a year or so, mostly because of power consumption and heat, but I don't like wasting money and I can't justify it to myself at this moment.
Great job on your vids, keep on!
good job Ham, love your videos!
I have this pc with core2duo can i upgrade this proccessor to core2quad ? Because i heard that may my motherboard not supports this new proccessor so that i want to make sure about this . I hope you can help me
I have a couple of core 2 duo gaming rigs myself. I enjoy seeing what an under powered machine can accomplish.
Almost the same configuration..still rocking it now
I'm looking forward to the Dreamcast episode :)
if memory serves me correctly, the Radeon HD 5870 like the one shown in the video, is actually a dual GPU, like its predecessors, the Radeon HD 6990 and the Radeon HD 7990, only not as powerful. gotta love putting the best HD 5xxx dual GPU with a trusty Core2 Duo. thats why i love these vids, i mean seriously, who puts a dual 5870 with a Core2 Duo. Amazing video dude, keep up the good work
*successors not predecessors sorry
I'm probably not the first to ask, but what kind of camera(s) do you use? I love the quality and would love to know what's responsible for it. I'm on the look out for a camera for RUclips myself.
Well, the core 2 duo is perfectly usable IF overclocked. Mount a giant cooler on the cpu and overclock it! And 2nd, awesome video!
The presentation is excellent
Them projector shots were LEGIT dude
I had a Core2Duo e7500 OC'd to 3.7GHz with Arctic Freezer Pro 7 for a few years, and the thing was beastily. With an HD5670, I was able to pull some decent frames in games like Crysis. That was before I needed something with more cores for VMs/editing, and I switched over to AMD.
