    In this video, we look at what is meant by irradiation and why this can be harmful. We then look at how we can reduce the risk from irradiation. Then we explore radioactive contamination and what is meant by "peer review".
    This video is based on the AQA spec. If you are following a different exam board then you should check your specification. The Amazon link above is an affiliate link. This provides a small commission which helps to support freesciencelessons. The cost remains the same to you. Thank you so much, your videos are immeasurably helpful.
    Just one question: is there any extra material or topics you would suggest going over for students aiming for 8s and 9s in science? Other than your videos and practice questions, of course (which are my two main points of reference)

    Can someone tell what a Radioactive tracer is in simple terms?

    • @Freesciencelessons
      @Freesciencelessons  5 лет назад +5

      It is using a radioactive isotope to identify the location of something eg a cancer or a leak in a pipe.

    • @tightcar1065
      @tightcar1065 5 лет назад +1

      It is when you place a source of gamma radiation into a leaking pipe, the gamma radiation will penetrate through the pipe and some of it will get absorbed depends on the thickness of the metal pipe. where there is a crack in the pipe the gamma radiation will collect on the outside, then using a geiger muller tube (detector) scan the pipe and where the crack is will be the point where the radiation is the highest.
      Hoped this helped.

    Hello there Sir Shaun. I wanted to ask about the properties of Alpha, Beta and Gamma radiation in magnetic fields. I have it in my book for an exam. So could you explain that please?

    • @Freesciencelessons
      @Freesciencelessons  5 лет назад +12

      That's not required for AQA GCSE. However, remember that any charged particle will change direction (deflect) in a magnetic field. Alpha and beta both deflect because they are charged (they deflect in opposite directions due to their opposite charges). Gamma is uncharged and does not deflect.

      Freesciencelessons I have three questions if you don’t mind :
      Can contamination cause irradiation over time, if it does, how?
      Can Irradiation occur at the same time as contamination?
      Do gloves prevent contamination but doesn’t prevent irradiation ?
      Thanks for your time.

    • @Freesciencelessons
      @Freesciencelessons  6 лет назад +27

      1. Yes it can. If you have radioactive particles actually on your skin or in your body, they are releasing radiation. So not only are you contaminated (the radioactive particles) but you are also being irradiated.
      2. Yes although they are separate things. So you could easily be irradiated (eg by standing next to a radioactive element so the radiation passes into you) without being contaminated (because non of that element is actually on you or in your body).
      3. Yes that's correct. Gloves will prevent contamination (well of the hands but they won't prevent you breathing in radioactive dust). However, beta and gamma radiation can easily pass through gloves (normal latex ones as opposed to heavy lead-lined gloves) so gloves won't protect you from irradiation (they will generally protect you from alpha radiation).
      Hope that helps.
