This is the first video I have ever watched regarding a SAN and how it plays a part in a network. I am starting to create my own network and this has helped me get a much better handle on SAN vs DAS. Very much appreciated, thank you ;)
This is awesome. I really appreciate it as an effort. I would like to see more in the area of: real world installation, maintenance, management, backup and setting SAN online for remote access. Thanks. Keep it up.
Loved your video...I was just screened for an SAN Administrator position and I had no clue what the recruiter was talking about...she was ready to hire me but I couldn't in good faith allow her to place me in a position that I had no clue of how to perform role that I would have been hired for..so I got on here to find out in detail what this IT SAN was all about and your video was most helpful in my learning process...thanks for sharing with us...
Thank you Georgette, I am in my senior year (major Network and communications management), currently in a class for storage. I just subscribed. Thank you for your thorough presentation.
I help manage the IT infrastructure of a medium sized business utilizing a Dell Poweredge SAN and Dell Eqiologic storage. Initially, when looking at the stack of hardware, it can be hard to discern the specific rolls of the Nodes involved in making up the entire San. A basic medium sized Business SAN consists of Blade servers, Basically Huge RAM sticks, what look more like RAM 2x4's when you slide them out of the Chassis. The Blade severs, can run the entire virtualized environment in real time while simultaneously backing up to a separate set of storage array disk, the Dell Equilogic storage array. The two are connected Via two San Switches utilizing the Fiber channel or in our cat 40Gig Dat cables. So our SAN consists of two Blade servers, connected via High speed DAT cables that run to two switches for redundancy. These switches connect to the wider network but also have the separate high speed connection, as mentioned above, to the storage array. To which, it can back up at very high speed. This in turn separates the devices handing processing and Hosting of services and the Device actually storing/saving the information. All this together offers much higher redundancy, storage scaelability high speed data transfer between the virtualized environment and storage, and higher connection speed for hosting services to the wider network. This vid helped me realize what I was looking at.
Great presentation and introduction to SAN. I was already aware of what it was but this improved what I knew. Had this saved in one of my playlists for years. Downloaded this as an mp4 since I was on a ship and the internet via cellular data can be crappy. Excited to know more since this is a pretty old video and SAN tech most likely has improved a lot by now, or replaced entirely by a better alternative technology.
Thank you so much for watching. SAN fundamentals covered in this presentation is still the same. Capabilities of the storage arrays have evolved. I will be covering in a future lesson coming soon.
Great video One question.! What is the software or OS installed on the SAN? Just like on servers you have AIX, Linux, Windows? Is the EMC Powerpath only for multipathing?
Quick question on design consideration. What is it meant when it is said that we are running out of floor space in a data center? How would a SAN benefit us if we are running out of floor space in a data center? thanks
This presentation was designed and delivered with the beginner in mind from the first second to the last one. It couldn't be made any better. Amazing.
Awesome explanation for beginners. Thank you so much.It would be great if you can make some more videos like this.
I came here after watching another Introduction to SAN video, and this one cleared everything up with the presentation images.
