  • In 1986 a startling discovery was made in Sichuan Province, China: two sacrificial pits filled with strange bronze masks, a divine tree thought to connect heaven and earth, and a life-sized statue of an enigmatic shaman king. They thought to belong to a hitherto unknown civilization over 3,000 years old: Sanxingdui.
Its discovery rocked the archaeological world. How was it possible for such an advanced civilization to flourish in a relatively isolated corner of China? Why did they create such wonderful works of art? How did they learn to create bronzeware thought to be more advanced than that of ancient Egypt? And most importantly, who were they?
In this episode of Travelogue, join presenter Tianran He as he attempts to unravel the secrets of the lost civilization of Sanxingdui.

This video of Sanxingdui is simply remarkable and raises so many questions of ancient China in the 3rd Millenium BC. I studied much history in college and can recall one lecturer referring to China as "infant" when compared to the Mid East but archaeology and analysis here tell us China's ancient past is much older and more sophisticated than previously assumed.

It should not be called Chinese because Chinese civilization has not been established in that area at that moment. It could be something else. However it does shows that civilizations are shifted from west to east.

These people were at some point sea going, and spent a great deal of time at sea..... Gold , ivory, jade, bronze ? These raw materials are found and process in abundance in certain cultures in the past. Likewise, before there were roads and shopping centers , in the distance past, people got there fine goods by sea.
Trace the natural sea current and you should eventually come across who they were trading with.

The Maori of New Zealand do a similar art style on their Totem Poles at the chiefs house, or prayer house, as do the coastal Indians of the Pacific Northwest.
Prahaps the Phonecians are responsible for carrying it arround to coasts.

I thumbed up your comment even though I disagree, because it's thought-provoking. For one thing, we might have more than one past, like we have more than one future and even present. Think of Schrödinger's cat. The full mechanics of time, or causality, is still a puzzle to us. Maybe your past evolves with you? In the best case, fantasy fills gaps in knowledge, working as a narrative glue connecting the facts. In the worst case, fantasy inspires us to find truth.

I am watching this for a second time. Was discussing some of the anthropomorphic figures from the Hongshan culture. She sent a picture from this particular find and the eyes look similar. Also, perhaps the large eyes and ears represent the ruler/king/emperor "hears all and sees all". Just a thought.

The same art style appears everywhere from Polynesia, to Melanesia, Austronesia, SE Asia, right up through all of East Asia, across the Bering Straights and down the coast across Northwest America, and down through the Andes. You can find the same grimacing face in all these places, the same swirling patterns, etc. There is clearly diffusion of art and culture through all these places, Also Celtic and Nordic Europe has a variation on those patterns, which should not be too surprising, since Indo-European folks wearing plaid felt tunics, based on horse and cart culture just like Celts appear 8,000+ years ago in Turkestan/Xinjiang. So, yeah, we are very connected.

What a great illusion you had. Turkeystan only exist when American created propaganda, it never exist as a human race anywhere more than 25 years ago.
Those bronze age Chinese celts it never exist. Celts are almost 1000 years younger than those found in China. The earlier DNA linking celts are hoax. Later it was found those acclaimed Chinese celts are DNA more related to Roman and Viking.

These excavation of Sanxindui bronze sculpture are amazing. The fact that China is a nation of craftsmen such the carving silver headgear of the Miao in Yunman. Is testimony o this skill. So having bronze age sculpture which date back 2000 year BC is nor surprising. Sceptics would wonder how these people had the technical skill to carve out bronze. UNFORTUNATELY These are found in Scizhuan China. Now we have all sorts of theory and even pseuduo experts trying to demise that this is chinese civilization simply because they had none. Similar to Aztec invention not neccessary it came from there.

The style is so similar to that of northwestern North American tribal art. Part of me wonders, too, if the eyestalks are just there so the item could be used as a form for more masks and the stalks are for the eye holes, or allow another material to be used for the irises.
