    I think the young Linus sprite in the suit could be for a cut scene of M jasper's funeral. After the funeral, he sheds the suit and changes into his familiar garb to live his natural lifestyle.

      A red tie is a symbol of power. I know it seems dumb, but red ties tend to give off an air of control and power, so many high-powered executives wear them. Blue ties are seen as more calming, so a businessman with one of those on might be expecting to influence someone with a soft touch. There's some interesting psychology behind colors and what they subconsciously do to us!

    Hi! I don’t know how, but in my first save, I became really good friends with Linus by accident. When I didn’t have enough space in my inventory I gave him some of the stuff I had found while foraging. I also always talked to all the villagers when I saw them ( well, with a few exceptions ). So even though I never intended to be friends with Linus. He was my first friend in the valley. So I now have a soft spot for Linus.

But where everyone else is disgusted when you root through trashcans when they walk by, if Linus sees it, he doesn't react negatively and actually gains a few heart points. I find it odd that actual Stardew people would harass Linus. No one ever talks bad about him other than Robin being uncertain of him initially. He’s never forced not to attend the festivals-he says he isn’t sure he’s welcome, but none of the villagers will ask why he’s there. And I know there’s the argument that people won’t confide in the farmer about that sort of thing, but why not? As you bond with everyone, they tell you things they don’t share with others. I just don’t see any animosity towards him that can be traced to someone specific.
    If he was part of Joja, who knows-could be one of Morris’s employees or someone else from the company targeting Linus for abandoning the company.

    • @Leapalot
      @Leapalot  2 года назад +68

      It's tough to imagine anyone in the valley throwing rocks at his tent since we end up getting close to everyone and finding out that they're all generally good people with their own lives and struggles. But someone's doing it! Is it nameless Joja cronies? Possibly. Linus has some secrets that he will never tell us, no matter how close we get. Perhaps some of our other neighbors have some things they're not proud of as well...

    • @Rikrobat
      @Rikrobat 2 года назад +37

      @@Leapalot - Certainly a possibility, though it seems like these “incidents” stop happening as the farmer and Linus become buddies, regardless of the other friendships you have in Pelican Town. I find it hard to believe non-friends would stop harassing Linus just because you’re close with him. He also has, presumably, been cooking the roast at the Luau before you arrived, and people seem chill with him there.
      Begs the question, are you the one (unconsciously) harassing Linus at night? Is there a vengeful spirit possessing your body or the bodies of others to cause trouble for Linus, which starts to be foiled as the farmer begins to restore balance to the farm? I do wonder…

But wait… if Linus was an adventurer, maybe he and the Dwarf have history? The Dwarf is right there, doesn’t feel bound by human values, and bears grudges. I always liked Linus from the second i saw him vibing in my first weeks in the game. I not only like the idea of this funky wild grandpa living his best life and imparting some wisdom now and then, after starting to trust the player. But I think i like what he stands for or what can be interpreted. He understands that regular folk have no say on what big corporations do to the enviroment, and that individual sacrifices or splurges are not impactful, and thus doesn't judge anyone in the valley for having a cozy middle class lifestyle, even participates in festivals.
    He tells you to thank the fish for his sacrifice after you eat it, as an exercise in being mindful to nature, being mindful of how little things can impact nature in a way i think also forces you to think on how bigger things do the same.
    He choses this lifestyle not because of a outstanding moral value, but for his own peace of mind. And if the theories on him being an ex joja executive are right, a sort of redemption and healing of his own spirit. He might not change a lot on his own but he is now deeply connected with nature.
    There's something really interesting and impactful in Stardew, how the game reminds you that yes driving joja away from this lil town (if you did that pfff), they are still at large, around and everywhere and won't be stopped anytime soon, yet that quite invisible sense of dread, very much similar to reality, is mitigated by Linus existence as a character, the victory might be small and inconsequential in the big scheme of things but it's still a victory, an example of a different path and way to do things.
    And if this executive from what basically was a coke corp, can realize his mistakes maybe hope is not lost?
    Went of the rails at the end there pfff but the thematic implications of Linus always interested me deeply.
    Your video essays never fail to get my brain cogs going, excellent work!!! Also i love the editing stile you use, it's calm but it doesn't drag. Very well paced!

    For speculation on who is bullying my boy: I think its a multiple culprits situation. I could definitely see Abigail and Seb spray painting the tent in a moody bout of rebellious bonding with each other. I could see Alex throwing rocks at the tent in a misguided exercise to improve his throwing arm, unaware that Linus was in there at the time (or at all).
    Now straight up destroying the tent, the only person I could see being THAT purposefully vindictive is our resident bastard George.. or more likely some mean out of town kids or even some monsters.

    Linus is the father of Morris. He and grandpa were in a love triangle with Mona. Linus came back to the valley after founding Joja and discovered the wizard drunk in his tower crying over his own failed marriage to the witch. He helped the wizard sober up and got him focused on trying to find an apprentice. Morris brought Joja to the valley in an attempt to be closer to his father and prove to him that not only is Joja good for a community but that he can be successful. Morris gets bitter and drunk sometimes and is the one responsible for the spray paint and the rock throwing as he lashes out at the one man that refuses to be proud of him and give him the love and approval he desperately desires. Linus would love to be a good father to Morris but just can't yet because of all Morris stands for which is why he approves of the farmer understanding his lifestyle. When Leo comes to the village Linus finds the 'son' Morris could never be and the apprentice the wizard needs.

    I'm on the spectrum (and cripplingly emotional), so the dialogue choices with NPCs was the hardest thing for me to navigate in my first play through of this game. Just as in real life, I never know if people want my true honest answer or they want a socially acceptable fake/generic one, and trying to calculate what is the "right". thing to say is extremely stressful as I never ever want to hurt or offend anyone. Linus was the first person in the Valley to be my friend, I think mainly because he's always about near the mines and he is easy to gift, and honestly thought it was more likely I'd get along with the village outcast then anybody else.
    I chose wrong in that dialogue 😔 I asked him to come live on the farm, it's not that I didn't accept him, I did, i just wanted to give him the option, and at this point I didn't know you could marry Npcs and have someone live on your farm and I hated how big my farm was, I just wanted to share and have a friend 😔 man when I tell you I almost cried myself to sleep that night I was so upset i said the wrong thing. After that I checked the wiki to make sure I didn't upset any more NPCs or get any other "social norms" wrong. I legit think I still haven't forgiven myself for misunderstanding him. Coz his opinion I cared about way more than anyone else's.
    Likely that you won't see this leap, but I love these videos of yours, they're so thoughtful and well done. And the Leo episode was so thought provoking & completely read me to filth 😂 call me Christina Colombus coz I was really out here being a white savior and had no idea!

      Hi Madeline, I'm glad you're enjoying the series! I think it's more important to learn how people feel than to already know what they want and give them that, for what it's worth. Even in these videos you'll see me interpret things in a way that the commenters don't agree with, and that's fine. I also learned things I didn't know from other people in the community! There's usually not a perfect answer to interpretation, so don't worry that you disappointed Linus, for example. It's all a journey! 😁

      @user-xu1ce4ri4h 2 года назад +3

      Linus is not an activist, he lives the way he thinks is right, but he is not trying to push his beliefs onto anybody else. In a way, your farmer is the exact opposite of him and Linus is still okay with being your friend. It's fine if you live in a huge house and chop down an entire forest to make more room for your crops, as long as you respect him and understand his lifestyle. Linus is not really a part of either community, so I guess in the end it doesn't really matter who "wins" the community center. If anything, he probably preferred it when it was abandoned and plants and animals could reclaim the space.

There’s a train car that is spray-painted with the words “Seb/Sebastian wuz/was here” (I can’t remember the exact wording but it’s Sebastian either way). Although I wouldn’t want to think that Sebastian would harass Linus like that, it’s the only context clue besides the fact that he lives in the home in front of Linus’ tent and that he goes up to the Spa area sometimes. I can see Linus maybe having once confronted Sebastian about throwing cigarettes out into the lake and telling him it’s not good for the environment, and Sebastian getting upset because he 1) goes to smoke because of his anxiety and 2) this old hobo who lives behind his parents’ house is telling HIM what to do.

So, since he goes to the bath house to warm up anyhow, he makes use of those facilities at that point rather than freezing his twig and berries off out among the twigs and berries. 😜 And yes. I HAVE put too much thought into this. This game does things like that to me.
    On an entirely unrelated note, I really love these videos of yours. Not only is this game (and by extension its residents) a really interesting subject to me with its deep lore and various mysteries and Easter eggs, but also your voice and cadence are very soothing! These videos make for great bedtime stories when the insomnia hits and I need help settling down. So thanks for that!

    I've also noticed that Linus never takes money from you. When you pass out in the caves, he is one of the people who are able to find you. From my own experience, each time Robin or Clint finds you 'lose' a large amount of money, say 2-4k, but when Linus finds the player you only lose 0.4-1.2k, which could be surprising for somebody with no money, and needs it, but again he's basically a hippie and I don't think he'd want it so it's up to interpretation, especially if you think the money is lost or stolen, idk.

    I like Linus overall but there are a couple of things that bug me. 1. Feels hypocritical when he says he only needs the wilderness when he's definitely getting non-wilderness stuff from people's trash cans. 2. He's not even being nice about it when he goes through people's trash -rather then clean up after himself he leaves such a mess that George thinks raccoons have been around.

    • @user-xu1ce4ri4h
      @user-xu1ce4ri4h 2 года назад +7

      1. It's not hypocritical at all. He lives the way he does because he doesn't want to damage the environment he lives in, not because he wants to make some kind of statement. His philosophy is that you should only take from nature what you need to survive. People who take more than they need end up throwing away valuable resources and fresh food. Those things have already been taken from nature by other people, so rather than have them go to waste, Linus makes use of them so that he himself has to take less.
      2. Linus doesn't make a mess, he just took the lid off the trashcan. George assumes it's raccoons because Linus' lifestyle is so alien to the other people in the valley that it doesn't even occur to them that another human being would voluntarily go through other people's trash.

    I'm guessing different culprits.
    The stones could be rocks falling from higher up. No hooligans required. He does live under cliff that had collapsed pretty close to his tent.
    Any of the younger ones could have done the spray painting. Not due to cruelty, but village youth can get exceptionally bored and thoughtless. Remember Sam just grinding on his neighbours' stuff?
    I suspect Shane and Pam may simply have run into the tent while slack-jawed drunk and collapsed it.
    On the whole, I think the village is way too OK with alcohol and everyone spends way too much time in the pub drinking. With that much alcohol going around, it is hard to say, who the culprit is.
    It could also be unseen visitors. He lives directly below the train station.
    Another possibility and my personal main suspects: Joja employees. They seem to be everywhere and would not like Linus' lifestyle. If he had been a former higher up, they might even have more of a motive.
    Edit: 3rd option: Linus may be lying or have mental problems. Think about it: You can bodyguard Linus tent way past anyone's daily routine and he may still make these claims the next day. We never see any evidence or hear collaboration from anyone that this is happening. In fact, how would he get spray-paint out of the cloth completely? You wouldn't be able to with a washing machine let alone elbow grease and a lake. Linus seems to have some issues. He constantly sets himself apart from the village, even though it always seems like that is unnecessary. I think this is just in his head...

    I dunno why but my first thought was Alex as the potential vandal. He just seems like the typical jock bully stereotype who probably doesn't understand how harmful certain things are and just go by "it's just a prank bro!" logic. Now that I think about it... that also applies to Sam.

    I don't think that anyone of the three possible coulprits would distroy Linus' tent. Abi herself is very darwn to nature and the mysterious. She would actually get along well with Lunus I think. Alex might be a himbo, but not a complete jerk and Seb... he has, like the others, no motives to do so imo and he is also more drawn to the mysterious and as the odd one out in his own home i bet he would actually accept Linus lifestyle.

    I'm not the first person to notice that Linus' suit looks a bit more like a military uniform, and while green hair isn't exactly unheard of in Stardew Valley, it looks more like he's wearing a beret. If that's the case though, his uniform doesn't seem to be the same as Kent's, and the red shirt and beret give it more of a revolutionary aesthetic. This leads me into what might be a bit of a wild theory, but what if Linus was originally a revolutionary from the Gotoro Empire?
    There's not a lot of lore on the world outside of Pelican Town, but given that the Ferngill Republic has at least one mega-corporation, Joja, and that Pelican Town has an elected mayor, it can reasonably be assumed to be a capitalist democracy. If the geopolitics of Stardew valley compare at all to our own then capitalist democracies rarely engage in open hostilities with each other, they're too economically interdependent, and thus the Gotoro Empire would more likely have a different form of government and economy, perhaps one similar to the USSR or the early PRC. If that's the case then it would likely have been started via a revolution, and Linus seems old enough to have potentially lived through it, or even been involved.
    Perhaps Linus wasn't always so content to live and let live, and rather than being a carefree hippie he was an environmental activist, railing against corporate greed and ecocide. Maybe he joined up with the revolution to make things better, dreaming of a world without the evils of capitalism, but for all its good intentions the revolution ended up off course, and the new Gotoro they tried to build instead became the Gotoro Empire, under the iron fist of it's own version of Stalin. Linus fled into Ferngill, knowing he wouldn't be safe in his homeland, and adopted a nomadic lifestyle out of necessity, fearing that he'd be recognized if he stayed in one place for too long. In time he grew to enjoy that life though, and now he wouldn't want anything else.
    This would explain why Linus can be such good friends with the player, even if they sold the town out to Joja and are running a dystopian factory farm; he's wholly disillusioned with activism, since it backfired and created a dictatorship the last time he tried, and thus is deeply committed to his "not my place to judge" attitude. As much as I like the idea of him being a founding member of Joja, I feel like that would compel him to try to talk the player out of chasing profit above all, not wanting them to make the same mistakes he did. Likewise, him being a normal hippie would make him at *best* skeptical of a player with corporate ties, but with him being an ex activist it would make sense. He sees the player joining Joja or whatever and is like "Who am I to judge, I've made much worse mistakes than that, and pushing my beliefs on others never ended well."
    I realize I don't have a lot of evidence for the theory, and it's more of a "what if" than anything I think deserves serious consideration, but hopefully someone found it interesting.

    I'm late to this video (just found this series recently and I'm loving it!), but I was curious about how Linus' dialogue about stopping in the Valley because of their great library plays into this theory? Maybe a nod to his late friend M. Jasper whose books are part of the collection? Just a coincidence maybe, or the reason why he came to the valley originally, even before meeting his adventuring group, then leaving and coming back after founding Joja? Or something else entirely? As the farmer there are a LOT of books in the library that we can't actually read, and the ones we can seem to just be excerpts from longer texts for the most part... makes you wonder what else is in there.
    I know it's not really a character-defining line or anything but it's always stuck out to me because I adore Linus, so I talk to him pretty much every time I see him and I feel like it's one of his few lines of dialogue that isn't about nature or the townspeople. Maybe I'm just reading way too into one line but that's basically this whole series lol, so maybe somebody else has some thoughts on this one? Feels like I had more of a point when I started typing this out but I sort of lost my train of thought... whoops : )

    • @slwrabbits
      @slwrabbits Год назад

      It's funny you mention that, since the farmer digs up all these lost books for the library. I wonder if Linus borrowed them all and is just very forgetful about putting them back, and your farmer just stumbles upon them in random spots and puts them back in the library.

    I feel like the whole scenario with the spray paint idea was probably not meant to truly harass or upset Linus, from the people who visit the spa I find it likely that it was probably Sebastian. (Im not trying to hate on him hear me out)
    1. Sebastian visits in fall, when it happens
    2. Sebastian is Someone in The Valley who likes a joke and a bit of edgy humour

    To me, I think Linus' unused sprite looks like a military uniform? Especially considering the hat looks to be a beret and the coat is similar to the one Kent wears. I think it's not impossible that Linus decided to live the way he does after experiencing the horrors of war.

    • @user-xu1ce4ri4h
      @user-xu1ce4ri4h 2 года назад

      I don't really see it. Sometimes it's hard to interpret sprites correctly, but I think the "beret" is actually just his black hair. He kind of has a similar hairstyle to Shane, a little longer and with a side part. In the sprite where he's still young but already wearing his hobo outfit, his hair looks pretty much the same, just a little disheveled.
      I doubt a military uniform would ever have that much red, it's meant to camouflage you after all.

    I don’t think it’s Sebastian or Abigail, they go in the mines sometimes. I think they know how to respect Linus. Sebastian and Linus are neighbours. Sam doesn’t feel like he would do it, but he’s the “most likely” culprit though even Sam is naturally a good hearted person. But honestly, I feel like the person who would do it most is Demetrius. He is passive aggressive against the farmer when farmer gets close to Maru and lies to his daughter about what he said for her betterment. What’s to say he didn’t think destroying Linus’s tent to get him to move is beyond him? He already has scenes where he has problems expressing his feelings through words. Maybe he felt it was best to get rid of Linus for Maru. Demetrius isn’t a bad guy persay, but even good girl Maru admits he is over bearing.

    • @user-xu1ce4ri4h
      @user-xu1ce4ri4h 2 года назад +1

      Why would he want Linus to move away, though? Demetrius is weird towards you in the beginning because your farmer is a new neighbor, single and presumably around the same age as Maru. He does not want his daughter to give up on her brilliant future just to stand around in a farmhouse kitchen 7 days a week and occasionally pop out a baby. Yes, he's overbearing but he means well. Linus does not really interact with anybody and is not forcing his lifestyle on anybody, either. He's just there.
      I don't really think he has issues expressing his feelings at all. He sometimes struggles to relate to non-scientists (tomatoes are fruit cutscene) but he handles those situations fairly well imo, explaining the issue to his wife and promising to get better. Him and Robin seem like the only genuinely happy couple in the entire village.
      So no, I don't think such a mature character would do such petty shit. He has no reason to.
