I assume the lack of showing Willy catching fish is just saving resources-why code something so specific that the player is only going to see occasionally? That said, I’m totally onboard with Willy being part of the pirate crew, or at the very least, still having the familial connections with them because of his father.

Willy seems too soft-hearted for piracy. Perhaps he left privateering behind when his dad died, or even before that - he clearly wasn’t on the voyage that crashed at Ginger Island. I like the idea of Birdie being his mother, though - they share a strong sentimental streak. Maybe the dad turned to deep-sea commercial fishing but created the cove for his old cronies, Willy eventually moving to Pelican Town to build a fish shop where there were people to sell to. The merchants in general seem unwilling to sell all their goods to the farmer. The villagers that can afford the prices treat Pierre’s as a general store, but we can only buy four staples and what we’ve sold him. Willy sells enough fish to the villagers to be seriously impacted by Joja, but also will sell us only our own catch. Clint talks about his iridium-infused maces and displays his weaponry at the fair, but we can’t buy any of it. Doesn’t the Ferngill constitution prohibit discrimination???

Only shops that seem fair are the Cat Hat, Sandy, Desert Trader, Krobus, Dwarf and Traveling Merchant, maybe Ginger Island Trader, I don't know that one deeply yet. Funny how a number of them aren't even human.

I always assumed most of these folks were substance farmers and fishers. They fish what they need to eat, and no more. I reckoned they had deals with each other, Ike the barter system. I also figured that, in such a small town, stuff like fishing would be more commission based, in that elliot asks for lobster, so Willie catches lobster, rather than Willie catching fish and hoping to sell it. Most villagers dislike it. It interests me that Pierre hates fish. Maybe he hates sharing the town with other food vendors.

As for not selling you fish, from the way Willy talks it sounds like he sells most of his fish outside of town, on long trips he takes outside of the valley. Not only that, he’s trying to keep the art of fishing alive and all that; he wants you to get out there and catch your own fish.
Don't know if it's always like this but I think Willy is a better vendor then we think. Once I had the help request to catch 5 herring, which i finished about 12:30 pm. I entered his shop with the town key just to look and guess who was standing behind the counter in the dark? And people say Clint is creepy. Still very diligent though. Probably the most likable character in SDV. IIrc he also cares a lot for the lonely kid on Ginger Island.

If we assume Willy IS catching fish and we just don't see the animation for it, could be that the reason he doesn't sell them in his shop is he's selling them wholesale, like to Gus at the Stardrop Saloon. I live in a port town and used to work at a seafood market, and although we had a retail store, about half of our business was done with the restaurants around town (In particular, since this is Maine we're talking about, a good chunk of the places that sell lobster rolls or lobster in general in the area got the lobsters from us - The store was on a wharf, so the lobstermen would bring their boats right up to the backside of the store and haul their traps up for us to unload into the tanks. We got and sold a LOT of lobster). It would explain where Gus is getting the ingredients for seafood dishes like the Baked Fish and Fish Tacos in his rotating stock from, and it makes sense given the context of Willy's 6 heart cutscene - After all, Gus does buy the crabs from him and start selling Crab Cakes at the Saloon for the next several days, so it would make sense if they had an arrangement where he was buying other seafood at wholesale prices from him as well!

i don't think birdie ever mentioned about her son. Someone loves her husband this much should also love her son to same extent. and you really don't need to be pirate to appreciate riches and mead. any normal sailor would be excited to catch some unexpected valuables in their net. and mead might be the most popular drink among the sailors (pirates or not) he is one of sweetest person in the game tho, i always appreciate people like him irl.

Completely unrelated but I noticed most of the diamond lovng npcs are old adults, my head canon is that the invention of crystallariums made gems worth less than they were and only the few who grew to appreciate the diamonds rarity and nerdy kids like Maru who knows the properties of them or a girl who likes old artifacts(Penny) love it.
I always felt that the store limitations are just the game showing you the things that you, the player, are interested in. For example, Pierre and Joja both sell regular groceries that you don't interact with - and maybe that is why you get a better price from Pierre for seeds, where Joja would then charge less for packaged food like the frozen pizzas Shane sneaks out. You see the option to re-purchase anything you sold them more as a game mechanic to correct any misclicks rather than "these are the only fish or parsnips in the entire shop".
I'm shocked you didn't mention about how on earth was Willy out at sea for the first two days on a fishing trip, but the first time we see his boat, it's trashed and we need to (all together now!) FIX IT OURSELVES!
Ok I have a theory about the pumpkin.... Well two theories and neither makes much snse... Ok first off only Krobus and Abigail also love the Pumpkin which makes me think it must have some mystical symbolism in the valley. What if on his pirate quests, Willy went looking for a mystical pumpkin, found it, covered it in gold, and then donated it to the town as a Spirit's Eve prize.....???? The second is that in a previous video you theorized the the Old Mariner might be Robin's first husband and Sebastian's father.... I totally see that because Sebby likes to stand out in the rain at the end of the dock and you only see the Old Mariner in the rain. I also like the theory that the Old Mariner is Willy's dad so like in my universe he and Sebby are half brothers. Also I have a theory that the Old Mariner helped Robin dig those shortcuts especially the one at the beach because maybe they're still seeing each other because she's secretly unhappy with Demetrius.... Anyyyyyways Sebastian loves pumpkin soup and it's a theory he likes it because his mom makes it. So Sebastian must also like pumpkins right???? eh let's ignore that and go back to Willy who HATES pumpkin soup. I love this theory because I love a) pirate stories and b) older characters that seem to have wild secret pasts (I'm also very fond of Marlon and Birdie because of this). However I just don't think Willy was ever a captain. A pirate certainly, but he doesn't seem to be one for ostentation or who would seek power or rank. He's just here for adventure and some wild nights on the sea with his crewmates, you know?
Willy never tells you he's a master fisherman, iirc. As for his relationship with the pirates, probably not, I think gold is much more piraty than diamonds and iridium bars are used to make all sorts of... fishy stuff. As for liking mead? Doesn't mean that if pirates give you mead, and willy seems to like it they must be related. This... makes no sense. Also good old Willy seems way too soft to be a pirate, let alone a captain. It's totally far fetched.

Well I think that Willy actually sells fish just like Pierre does, our character just isn't interested in buying it (just like with Pierre, again.), you can make that assumption just by looking at his shelves in store, they're all filled with fish (obviously).
If your fish is truly fresh without toxins (natural or otherwise) shouldn’t “smell”. Yes fish will smell but that really bad fishy smell isn’t great. Not bad, edible, but not great.

Honestly the whole "he doesn't sell fish" is not true in my opinion, also him casting right in front of him and not catching anything... These all things are only there for looks, not the lore. Also I think the only reason we as the player cannot buy fish from Willy or crops from Pierre/joja unless we sell them first is only to not make people buy all bundle items. Not for lore.

Pumpkins are high in vitamine C. If you have low vitamine C you are likely to cach scurvy. And pirates and sailors were known to often cach scurvy due to them not getting enough vitamine C.
I love talking to willy in game so much. I always headcanon hes a mentor/grandpa figure to the farmer after they lost their grandpa. I love the idea Willy just didnt have the heart to be a pirate like his father and instead just became a fisher. I think he still misses his youth. I like to imagine he takes the farmer under his wing because in a way the farmer reminds him of his dad. Adventurous and always seeking some treasure, in the mines or in the sea.
I think the books about fisherman and his son are about Willy and his dad. Willy also knows about legendary fish which are described in the book. Also he' s really invested in fishing, most of his quotes are about fish and he tried to " fishing tradition allive"
Fishing is always the very first skill I get to level 10, it's my main way of making easy money at the beginning of each playthrough. So I stare at the pixelated water a lot. I also often fish right next to Willy and recently I was thinking the same: Why is Willy casting so close to the shore? I, however, used to have a hobby that makes me look at it differently: I used to create mods and maps for various games. So in my opinion Willy casts so close to the shore because it's the best way of maintaining his sprite animations, it's just a technical limitation, the easiest solution, all contained in a single sprite unlike the player who's composed of three separate elements at the time of fishing, four if he catches a fish. Another thing that kinda confirms my idea: all NPCs lack animations for running, because why would anyone make animations for something that's not needed? If you make a mod that let's you play, Lewis for example, he will flicker while running because no frames for running has been drawn for him. I am also a writer for D&D games and let me tell you, game mechanics and balance are completely separate from the game's lore. What I mean by that is Willy probably has no fishes to sell because that's some kind of balancing fix ConcernedApe deemed necessary, if another NPCs says Willy is the best fisherman then it's most likely true even though you never see him catching fish. When crafting a theory always put in-game's lore before in-game's mechanics. You have to keep in mind that some things are in game just and only to keep the player engaged, for example: Your farm. Why the hell do rocks randomly grow there? Who's refilling the mine? Was Qi waiting on 100th floor for the entire year since you got that note? Why couldn't you drive the cart to the quarry before repairing the bridge? Etc

I always felt that the store limitations are just the game showing you the things that you, the player, are interested in. For example, Pierre and Joja both sell regular groceries that you don't interact with - and maybe that is why you get a better price from Pierre for seeds, where Joja would then charge less for packaged food like the frozen pizzas Shane sneaks out. You see the option to re-purchase anything you sold them more as a game mechanic to correct any misclicks rather than "these are the only fish or parsnips in the entire shop".

Ok first off only Krobus and Abigail also love the Pumpkin which makes me think it must have some mystical symbolism in the valley. What if on his pirate quests, Willy went looking for a mystical pumpkin, found it, covered it in gold, and then donated it to the town as a Spirit's Eve prize.....????
The second is that in a previous video you theorized the the Old Mariner might be Robin's first husband and Sebastian's father.... I totally see that because Sebby likes to stand out in the rain at the end of the dock and you only see the Old Mariner in the rain. I also like the theory that the Old Mariner is Willy's dad so like in my universe he and Sebby are half brothers. Also I have a theory that the Old Mariner helped Robin dig those shortcuts especially the one at the beach because maybe they're still seeing each other because she's secretly unhappy with Demetrius.... Anyyyyyways Sebastian loves pumpkin soup and it's a theory he likes it because his mom makes it. So Sebastian must also like pumpkins right???? eh let's ignore that and go back to Willy who HATES pumpkin soup. What if he hates pumpkin soup because Robin makes it for Sebby all the time and he's jealous that Sebby didn't have to go travail the seas with their daddy the Old Mariner and pumpkin soup reminds him of the cozy childhood he never got that he thinks Sebastian did because he doesn't know how dysfunctional that family is.

I love this theory because I love a) pirate stories and b) older characters that seem to have wild secret pasts (I'm also very fond of Marlon and Birdie because of this).
However I just don't think Willy was ever a captain. A pirate certainly, but he doesn't seem to be one for ostentation or who would seek power or rank. He's just here for adventure and some wild nights on the sea with his crewmates, you know?

Willy never tells you he's a master fisherman, iirc. As for his relationship with the pirates, probably not, I think gold is much more piraty than diamonds and iridium bars are used to make all sorts of... fishy stuff. As for liking mead? Doesn't mean that if pirates give you mead, and willy seems to like it they must be related. This... makes no sense. Also good old Willy seems way too soft to be a pirate, let alone a captain.

Well I think that Willy actually sells fish just like Pierre does, our character just isn't interested in buying it (just like with Pierre, again.), you can make that assumption just by looking at his shelves in store, they're all filled with fish (obviously).

Honestly the whole "he doesn't sell fish" is not true in my opinion, also him casting right in front of him and not catching anything... These all things are only there for looks, not the lore. Also I think the only reason we as the player cannot buy fish from Willy or crops from Pierre/joja unless we sell them first is only to not make people buy all bundle items. Not for lore.

I love talking to willy in game so much. I always headcanon hes a mentor/grandpa figure to the farmer after they lost their grandpa. I love the idea Willy just didnt have the heart to be a pirate like his father and instead just became a fisher. I think he still misses his youth. I like to imagine he takes the farmer under his wing because in a way the farmer reminds him of his dad. Adventurous and always seeking some treasure, in the mines or in the sea.
I think the books about fisherman and his son are about Willy and his dad. Willy also knows about legendary fish which are described in the book. Also he' s really invested in fishing, most of his quotes are about fish and he tried to " fishing tradition allive"
Fishing is always the very first skill I get to level 10, it's my main way of making easy money at the beginning of each playthrough. So I stare at the pixelated water a lot. I also often fish right next to Willy and recently I was thinking the same: Why is Willy casting so close to the shore? I, however, used to have a hobby that makes me look at it differently: I used to create mods and maps for various games. So in my opinion Willy casts so close to the shore because it's the best way of maintaining his sprite animations, it's just a technical limitation, the easiest solution, all contained in a single sprite unlike the player who's composed of three separate elements at the time of fishing, four if he catches a fish.
Another thing that kinda confirms my idea: all NPCs lack animations for running, because why would anyone make animations for something that's not needed? If you make a mod that let's you play, Lewis for example, he will flicker while running because no frames for running has been drawn for him.
I am also a writer for D&D games and let me tell you, game mechanics and balance are completely separate from the game's lore. What I mean by that is Willy probably has no fishes to sell because that's some kind of balancing fix ConcernedApe deemed necessary, if another NPCs says Willy is the best fisherman then it's most likely true even though you never see him catching fish.
When crafting a theory always put in-game's lore before in-game's mechanics. You have to keep in mind that some things are in game just and only to keep the player engaged, for example: Your farm. Why the hell do rocks randomly grow there? Who's refilling the mine? Was Qi waiting on 100th floor for the entire year since you got that note? Why couldn't you drive the cart to the quarry before repairing the bridge? Etc
