Dr. Alex is always a joy to listen to. Loved his initial skepticism to the JWST ever working. It is a testament to the team just how many critical obstacles they had to overcome. The number of potential single point failures was incredible.

    • @osemarvin2847
      @osemarvin2847 Год назад

You are right. That's the way it is at the moment.
Let me just add a little sidenote. They could give out Nobel prize for the whole team if they wanted, since there's absolutely no mention whatsoever in Alfred Nobel's will and testament about the number of people who could be awarded. That really is true - Alex Filippenko himself did mention this in one of his interviews
So, according to Alfred Nobel, any Nobel prize could be shared by any number of people.
But it's the Nobel prize committee, which created this arbitrary rule after Alfred's death, mostly because it used to be that science and discoveries were made by one or couple of scientists back in the early 20th century. But as everyone knows, modern science nowadays is done by teams of people (like discovery of Higg's boson; 5-8 thousand people were involved). So the Nobel committee's arbitrary rule is just vastly outdated - and it never was actually Alfred's idea in the first place.

Was wondering about how JWST detects spacial drift and keeps and maintains its positioning at L2 ... I mean it's not like a ship at sea using GPS to maintain an exact position within a few meters, or is it? A million miles out, thats more than 3 times the distance to the moon ...
How does JWST KNOW if and when it needs to fire up thrusters to account for drift and How does JWST know what attitude to orient itself so as to utilize the heat shields at there optimum ...
Is JWST autonomous or is it controlled from the ground?

In a previous reply I criticized his saying a million million is a Trillion. I had never heard it added that way... I had always heard it in progression (a thousand x a thousand is a Million... a Thousand X a million is a Billion... a thousand X a Billion is a Trillion.)
After I thought about it for a few seconds Dr. Alex Filippenko is absolutely correct... a Million X a Million (a thousand X a Billion) is a Trillion !

What on earth makes you think there is a universe? "It's all we can see"? "It's all we know"? That is what led to flat earth and earth is center on solar system and milky way is all there is. How about starting with assumption of Infinite complexity of all things great and small? Then science will stop sounding painfully naive.

The scientist has an argumentative tone as if he is arguing against some objection.
This is ridiculous and is not a product of wisdom nor empiricism.
It is relating facts in an aura of belligerence.
This manner of speech does not inspire nor induce interest in the field beyond the facts involved.
A young person for instance ,who potentially would consider astronomy, would not wish to spend days with a scientist who gesticulates imagined controversies nor rants in exaggerated emotional tones unrelated to careful empirical thought.
This is typical of a sector of U.S culture which nurtures heightened emotionality for itself, unrelated to anything sensible.
Moreover they spend billions of people's hard earned dollars to photograph fuzzy dots in space and rave about the emr that comes from them.
How does that contribute to repairing the defoliation of Earth or harmonise with the real time synergies life requires to exist here?
To add a note of absurdity to their interest the light they observe is from millions if not billions of years ago.
