And Hezley “Wow” . To be so young and under that extreme pressure. I’m so proud of these athletes. I wish for a speedy recovery for Skye , Shilese, and Kayla. They worked so hard. Kathy nailed it when she talked about the pyramid of building blocks for all of the athletes out there. Every great athlete pushes the other to be their absolute best. It is really special to see the top athletes reaching down to bring others up, those down a few reaching up to support and ultimately the community and crowd at OT just pushing the energy to elevate all of the athletes. I loved seeing the 7th, 8th, 9th , and 10th place athletes getting their hugs in with the top finishers. They ALL matter!

    Leanne is incredible. I wanted what she wanted. I admit I wanted all of the Tokyo Team, in full ride to Paris. I didn't know how it would happen, if it could happen, but I wanted her on the team. I also understood that it may not happen so I had to get my mind right. I'm pretty good at course correction and making adjustments in the midst of chaos. But she's an amazing professional and her future is so bright.

      Same. Leanne is so special and I just can't help but to deeply admire not only her amazing gymnastics, but her incredible character. And she held nothing back this trials! I mean, throwing the Cheng?!! Just incredible of her to do that! And I know she is an alternate, but she is still "on the team" as far as I'm concerned, because we all know how CRUCIAL olympic alternates are! So I feel like we are in such good hands having Leeanne and Josc as backups.

      @taylorburtis oh absolutely agree! I have been such a Leanne and Suni stan for so long. And keep in mind-- just like trials, we NEVER KNOW what will happen. So we need Leanne and Josc ready to jump in at any moment. We have used our alternates many times in the past. So they truly are CRUCIAL to our team success. Also, I could be wrong, but don't alternates get medals as well if the team gets one? I know they don't get it during the ceremony, but I thought they get one to take home with them?

    • @laurasenz
      @laurasenz Месяц назад +2

      @@SquirtlePower809 No; I believe some countries will award alternate medals at other competitions, but not at the Olympics. Olympic alternates aren't considered to be officially part of the team or officially Olympians, and basically cease to exist, unfortunately, from a competition standpoint as soon as qualifications begin. From that point on, nobody can be subbed in and teams are locked, even if injuries occur later. Alternates aren't allowed to either stay in or train in Olympic facilities and essentially just become regular spectators. It's a huge achievement to even get to that point, but I believe quite a few alternates from many countries have spoken about how mentally difficult it is as well.

  • @creating1_c1999

    @43:36, thanks Bridget and Kathy for saying this. Alicia spoke of this in the post selection interview on USA Today, about the maths fell in the rank order of AA. I predicted this based on the performances of past, seniority/experience, strategic upgrades. But I'm sure people will whine and whine about the top 5 and call Alicia a fibber. But the truth is this was aligning. The universe has spoken.
    Joscelyn Roberson is by far "teacher's pet" for me. She would be sitting right by my desk, like my helper. I just know it. She is absolutely adorable and a powerful pint sized talent. She's made an incredible return and with cleaner gymnastics. She is living her dreams. I couldn't be more proud. She's heading to the Razorbacks. We know she will have the leadership of two Olympians. But I think she's going to put a spell on the Hogs. I do. I'm claiming it.
    There are so many who wanted Josc. I have been fielding the comments and we've all agreed that Josc is our girl and she was right on the cusp of making this team. Her bars vs Hezly's fall a little short.
    Here's the deal. Because her FX and her VT and being on the cusp, her being a first alt., makes sense. We do not know what this evening will bring or up to the last moments before the team quals/finals. But she is very proud of her work and that she's right where she dreamed she could be. That cute little girl whose hero was Simone, is living her dream. I have never seen anyone so overcome with gratitude in their aura. Amazing things are going to align for her. I feel it.
    There was talent in spades. I'm still so overwhelmed in watching. There are some gymnasts who will have some outstanding college experiences that are primed to go with intent letters in hand.
    You heard it from me. International/World meets and being selected to a national team is the ticket to NCAA. This is a new day and soon the Olympics for women's artistic gymnastics is going to have to do somethings to get the ladies to even want that route. This is a different era for professional gymnasts and NCAA.

    • @SquirtlePower809
      @SquirtlePower809 Месяц назад +2

      Absolutely agree! Joscelyn has been such a steady climber these last few years and such a fighter. And I'm SO SO SO PROUD to see the 1001 ways she improved leading up to trials. She put in the work. She made the effort. And she is being rewarded for that! I also agree that alternate is the right spot for her this year, since we really needed Hezley bars/beam more than another vault/floor worker. But I feel really confident with her and Leeanne as our safety nets.
      As excited as I am for the Olympics, I'm almost more excited in some ways for the next quad lolz! We have soooooo many rising stars and possible returning powerhouses that it should be an incredible next 4 years!

    • @SquirtlePower809
      @SquirtlePower809 Месяц назад +2

      And also, yes a lot of couch analysts are already complaining about AA order being the selection process, but they simply don't realize that the math doesn't lie. It just so happened (due to several heartbreaking injuries) that the highest scoring team was 1-5 and 6-7 were the next 2 athletes with the most helpful routines for backups.

    But another reason for this is that, over the years, I’ve seen how important it is to have a “next generation” athlete in the mix for the Olympics to lead the cadre for the next 4 years. I cannot imagine the forthcoming NCAA season without Kathy's sage commentary. (No shade to Li Li, certainly she has made a fantastic mark thus far); but can we take a moment and consider what USAG would be like with Kathy Johnson Clarke at its helm? Kathy has tremendous experience, she has monumental passion, mammoth wisdom, epic mother vibes, she has resounding respect from the gymnastics community and the public, not to mention her gargantuan vocabulary. Anyone who knows Kathy knows that she is queen of the 'gymnastics is an artistic sport' mountain, yet the way that she discusses Jade's progress, dedication, and quite resolution... Kathy has succeeded in making me become OK with the fact that Jade made it onto the team (for her 2nd go at the Olympics), instead of someone like Jocelyn, who has many of the same strengths, but with more engaging artistry. I have to comment before even finishing the whole evaluation.... Simone is the most her true self that I have ever seen! I genuinely hope that she can continue to block out the noise in Paris and continue to be that true self. I loved that you commented on her sitting on podium after her floor routine! I noticed the same and thought the same! Can you even imagine how exhausting that floor routine is???!!! Watching track and field interviews 5 minutes after a sprint and they are still gasping through it! She is human, but just barely! I stand by my opinion that Jade is most improved in every way. Her form on vault is WAY better! And she is weirdly flexible in her leaps for being SO naturally tight (you know what I mean if you know what I mean). Her artistry is SO much improved along with her overall confidence (NCAA 100%). Hezly is AWESOME! Despite EVERYTHING that she is capable of, I cannot get past the simple beauty of the one dance move on beam where she contracts her chest and then extends her arms out in front of her to the most elegant finished pose, extended all the way through her fingers with the lift of her chin. This just makes me tingle EVERY single time! Josc! Just WOW!

    Ugh I have SO MANY things to say and so many feelings about this Trials. Let me start with I absolutely LOVE the "Phoenix Five" name and we really need to try to get that trending!
    Next, my heart still hurts for Skye, Kayla, and Shilese. It might soubd weird, but i feel the worst for Kayla, because of how many times she has tried to fight for spots and the number of times she was either an alternate or just didn't make it. And this time it really looked like she was going. I don't think she will return tbh, but you never know. Skye and Shilese i know will be back. They are still so young and have so much to give.
    I adore all the members of the team and am soooo happy for them all, but i have a special place in my heart for Suni. This girl beat all of the odds stacked against her. Overcoming not one, but TWO kidney diseases with doctors telling you that you will never do gymnastics again?? And yet she fought with every ounce of her spirit to overcome and she had SO MANY people doubting her or counting her out (i can't even count the sheer number of comments I have personally seen online from people saying Suni had no chance of making it. Saying she didn't have the stamina. Saying she didn't have the skills. Saying that she didn't have enough time. Saying so many things!) but i knew better! I KNEW Suni could and WOULD make this team. Her gymnastics is truly in a league of its own. I know we all talk about Simone 24/7, and for good reason cause she is the GOAT, but Suni is also a GOAT just in a different way. Her gymnastics is not only incredible difficult, it is the MOST GORGEOUS that i have ever seen personally. It is ethereal and otherworldy the way that she moves. It is art. And maybe it is just me, but I actually think we should seriously consider using her floor routine in team finals!!! It scored 13.85 already and we KNOW she can upgrade her second and third pass, so she will easily get a 14.2-14.3 on floor. I just feel more confident in her ability to avoid artistry deductions.
    Anyhow, they are all so incredible and my heart is so full and excited for them to be PHOENIX FIVE in Paris!!
    Go USA 🇺🇸

      I think Jade, Jordan, Suni, and Simone are: The Gang Of Roses
      I think they should write a manual, teach a masterclass, training camp, something...there's a lot of sport intelligence there and too many are missing it by going off of their personal biases.
      Nothing about this team presented doubts for me. I didn't know what was going to happen and with the injuries...but I felt it was going to look like this. Many were doubters about 3/5 and still are. These are emotional responses because they want their participatory awardee on the team. Everything from claiming some are old, overmedalled, and need to let others shine doesn't equal a strong or the strongest team. And to try to call this team "not the strongest" in the same breath as demanding limits on strong repeaters is asinine to me.
      It's silly to even wish for a weaker team just to have your personal favorite is weird.
      But for those of us who "study the students" see there is more to many of these gymnasts and they show up and peak right when they need to.
      If anyone doesn't know what peaking means, I hope they watched and learned. If they missed, maybe my #GangofRoses will teach a masterclass on it.

    Thank you, Kathy and Bridget, so much for your compassion and insight. And on the subject of researching what may be behind the injuries, please get the message to those who can do an investigation, that it seems so many gymnasts we are hearing about, both in the US and internationally, are sustaining Achilles injuries. From a physical therapist's point of view, I would wish for studies to include athlete injuries we are not hearing about publicly, equipment and environment, taping techniques, alignment, whether proper warmup/ shoes/ and plyometrics may be a factor, hydration, whether skills are being pushed at the last moments and perhaps if those skill intensities/ equipment/ and resiliency of the human body may be at a limit for some athletes, technique, and whether there is any commonality such as certain medications that may be approved for use but may have increased risk of tendon injuries. Additionally, I really appreciate your comments in a past episode, Kathy, regarding ballet and other dance training as well as training for the feet. It seems in the past several years that there are stunningly beautiful gymnasts who have very tight feet and ankles and who have running mechanics that do not match the extraordinary gymnastic skills they are performing. Perhaps a focus on the fundamentals can find its resurgence. There are many parallels to ballet and during the 50's-80's, the quality of fundamentals in ballet was much higher than we often see now. It seems there may be a correlation with gymnastics and figure skating as well.

They select their best. Everyone knows who the medal contenders are globally. We expect to see them. This is a meet of the best. It's no secret. I truly don't get the question.

    Are we sure Suni wasn't attending to her kidney problems when she left the building? I saw her do that at the Classics.

    Phoenix Five is a TERRIBLE name. The reasoning makes sense but it sounds soooo stupid. I hope that's not what they go with.
