I’m sure I saw an interview with Francis Rossie where he said the B and Top E strings are tuned together and the opening riff is played on 2 strings! If you see the old black and white footage of Quo doing it on Top Of The Pops, you can make out Rossie barring both strings , not just the B string! Thanks for the instruction video - nice guitar 🎸👍🏻
Brings back a lot of memories for me. One of the very first songs I learnt on guitar back in 1969 when the "Pictures Of,,," was in the Australian charts and I was in high school. It impressed the girls and it was a tad easier to play than Hendrix.
You maked a great lession. I´m a pure beginner in playing electric guitar and this video inspired me to sit on the PC and the AMP with my new guitar at home to learn this absolute famous song. Thank You so much!!!!
simplicity at its best. so 60's yet so great. I was born in 67 and think I missed out on a fantastic era. to be in your late teens in the 60's would have been an amazing time. ah well. . . I had duran duran and human league lol I was more into my metal anyway hey ho.
Thanks dude, these lessons really helped me. Due to you I have been able to actually finish a tune all through for the first time. The Undertones Teenage Kicks lesson you did has worked wonders thanks.
Great lesson. One of my favourite psychedelic songs. Glad you went into the effects side of things, being new to electric guitar I don't know much about effect peddles so that explained a few things. :)
The original recording Francis Rossi tuned down the high E to a B then left it slightly flat that's how you get that resonance between the two strings other than that a great tutorial
Yes, absolutely correct. There's an interview somewhere on RUclips where Rossi mentions it. I only found this out after I'd filmed the vid or I would have talked about it. It's a great trick - kind of a manual way of achieving a chorus effect. Live though, they always seemed to use standard tuning. At some point I might do an update on this video.
Tune your E string to B and play the main riff hitting both strings at the same time, leave the E string open, thats how you get that twang sound. I think that's how I remember it, I don't have a guitar now to try it out as I got a serious arm and hand injury a few years back.
I think I discovered the gimmick sound to this song. If you tune the top (thin) E string down 2 frets (to D) & play it open as a drone string it sounds pretty psychedelic.
Yes - there's a Francis Rossi interview somewhere where he says in the studio he tuned the high E down to a B and played the riff in unison to get the phase-y sound. Wasn't aware of this when I made the video though or I would have tried it.Live it just looks like standard tuning to me with some kind of effect.
you can be an idiot, but you have to work hard I've been playing for about a year and a half now I'm 14 and can play well but it takes a lot of practice I had a lesson every 2 weeks but it's not for the lazy good luck bro
Adrian, just curious as to what make/model wah pedal you used? There are so many of them now. I’m looking to use one for vintage sounds like Cream and the Status Quo you played. One of the best RUclips teachers out there! Thank you!
Rossi did not use an effect. He simply tune down. The B string to a E and just get the string just above the E string. There you got the flanger effect. Of course you must play on both strings. Goodluck
This will most probably sound arrogant, but: I do believe people should try and find out what the notes of this rather simple and slow lick are by LISTENING to it lots of times and getting closer to it by trial and error. (No offence to the tutor!) That's what I did in 1966. I am certainly not a brilliant guitar player, but it did help me immensely to rely on my ears and figure it out for myself.
can anyone tell me what he is doing to his d chord. I'm looking up charts and stuff but my d chord doesn't sound as cool s his and I can't figure out what he's doing
Thanks. Love this song. I'm a very elementary guitar player - have noodled around for decades, but still am ignorant as to many chords/shapes. A minor suggestion - when you added the wah pedal for the final rendition of the chords, you used different fingering than in either of the previous two versions you demonstrated. It momentarily - maybe more than momentarily - freaked me out. But in the end, I now know THREE fingering options for these chords. (be mindful of how sensitive those of us who don't have anywhere near your expertise might be to such changes).
Yes it is. Only discovered this after I made the video. It works as I play it here, but for authenticity you can tune the top 2 strings in unison when playing the riff to create that kind of chorus effect. At some point I might update this video if I have time.
Best quo song ever.
A really cool psychedelic tune.

A good teacher who has patience and shows you different way of doing thing. Thank you for your time..

Well done, one of the more underrated songs from then.

You've just convinced me to buy an electric guitar.
Yoda on DMT play the guitar you must!
This guy is good good teacher I remember that song
Well presented mate, clean and precise, keep em coming

Fantastic as a complete novice Ive just learnt my first riff !!!! Fantastic 👍
Thank you for this superbly delivered tutorial, much appreciated.
Thanks for lesson, I try it!!! I love Status quo👍♥️🎸
Very nice, as a beginner I plan to make this my first song to learn and play.
Great lesson. One of my favourite psychedelic songs. Glad you went into the effects side of things, being new to electric guitar I don't know much about effect peddles so that explained a few things. :)
Excellent work as always. Many thanks 😃🙏🏻
Great lesson. So simple, sounds great. Thank you. 😎
Loved this, was a youngster when these guys were around, always wanted to learn to play, but just never did, pity

with your help I was able to learn this song in one hour many thanks
This must have been buried l just randomly found it thanks none friends never heard of it found it when I lived north staffs
I know this one from the Camper Van Bethoven cover too
Key Lime Pie is one of the greatest albums ever. ❤️
muy buena clase de esta bella cancion de status quo de 1968 thanks
This song used to creep me out when it was playing on the radio. (I’m old) There were no modulation pedals then. It was tape flanging for sure 🎉
Its the underwater effect sounds awesome i have it .thanks for showing me the notes brother

Fuck! I love this song so much :D
Late 60's classic rock song learning to play great fun!
I played this song in a garage revival band. The challenge was getting the wah-wah in the verse accurately. I just couldn't get my foot to co-operate.
Or ive watched the vid ill try flanger
Love this song. Such a strange one, so different to the 3 chord wonders the quo churned out in the 70s and 80s
They were sick of the pop star garbage and being told what to do all the time
Well done!!
I think I discovered the gimmick sound to this song. If you tune the top (thin) E string down 2 frets (to D) & play it open as a drone string it sounds pretty psychedelic.
Great lesson man, thank you.
LUVILLI, Adrian 👌 NICELY PLAYING
Seen this over and over just for the entertainment.
Watching live, it looks like the G and B strings are tuned in UNISON to get that lick. RUclips Status Quo LIVE plus a phaser thing

Very helpful.
merci beaucoup, you are a good teacher !
Fantastic ! Thank you so much , a really informative lesson in which hopefully an idiot like me may be able to grasp !
you can be an idiot, but you have to work hard
I've been playing for about a year and a half
now I'm 14 and
can play well
but
it takes a lot
of practice
I had a lesson every 2 weeks
but it's not for
the lazy
good luck
bro
Thank you
genial, ya puedo participar para el show de rodsquare 2
Cool lesson
Nice lesson
I love the suggestion to 'work it out for yourself'... I agree. Don't spoon feed everyone!
Good stuff! Camper Van Beethoven does a really solid cover of this song as well.

Love the Wawa peddle great lesson
Need cord sheet
Very nice… thank you.
Thanks so much

I love the wah wah pedal.
That was awesome!! What amp are you using ?? sounds great !!
THANK ....................................................................... Q.
I just started playing, and I got the first riff down, but could there be an easier way to play the next part?
But why this riff is a kind different of original recording of that song from 1968?
Hi can it be played without bar chords
Sounds better if you detune the high E to B and play the riff on two strings.
Status Quo were also known as 3 Cord Wonders 😊
👍🏻

What's are the chords
Mickey Avalon - I Get Even
The E should be tuned down to a B

Maybe just me, but it isn’t the same without the wah pedal added.
Freaking Google, I want the song by Status Qua. 😠😆
Needs the phasing
Know one realized to this day that this song aint by satus quo its camper van beethoven
This song needs the wah wah pedal.
Darn I was hoping this was the Ozzy_type o version with the pick slides
Ozzy osbourne cover is so much better then the original in my opinion
