  • Mr. Maynard Keenan..... makes some hot flapjacks!
I in no way take credit for this release, as it has been floating for awhile. What I did do is clean up the mix a bit, so it is stronger in both channels, and a bit more centered. I also just cleaned it up a little bit as a whole so the audio was clearer, and you can hear Maynard's harmonizing a lot better now.
I still want to tinker with it a bit, but I think it's a little bit better now. Maynard's vocals are much easier to hear.
Photo is of Layne, Kat Bjelland, Les Claypool, and MJK at Lollapolooza '93.
Audio and photo is being used under the fair use notice act.
    Hope you enjoy!

I know there's tons and tons of bad audio bootlegs out there, and I'm monkeying with a few live takes at the moment as it is to try and make them audible (some of them are bigger turds than the original mix that was floating of this one, and OCD makes me redo things a LOT sometimes and I won't finish and mix everything down for a minute with those; this was a lucky exception that I didn't obsess over too much), but I was just wondering if you were happy with this mix.... Is there any other stuff in particular out there that you'd like me to take a stab at? I lost my day job awhile ago and have been doing freelance and resale ever since, but my night job includes my own personal music studio and I enjoy cleaning up and restoring audio, even if it can only be taken and improved so much.
I also have time on my hands right now, and the means to edit audio as a whole is much easier with my current setup. It would be worth my time at night when I need to eventually pull out the headphones to try and fix up some other rough tracks- be it live or otherwise. I prefer doing live stuff, because it has already been bootlegged, and isn't an official release... but I am open to any suggestions. I plan to rip some vinyl to my page pretty soon once I rearrange things and setup a record player closer to my interface. I'm probably going to start with my Big Black stuff... still kinda shocked by Albini's death. But anyway, to end this little note that I wish I knew how to pin, if you have any suggestions or requests for any audio that could use a tune-up (heh,,, puns), please post it or let me know in the comments! I really do appreciate all of the good feedback. I did not expect so many people to enjoy this remix so much. I really appreciate the positive feedback and am happy to have been able to clean this up to everybody's liking.

aha! I said within there that I did not know how to pin things, but it was really easy. TLDR: I'd love to try to clean up other inaudible or plain-bad live recordings, or even b-sides/outtakes or alt. takes.
I also had an old channel that had a lot of vinyl rips, rare live stuff, some demos I had traded for or acquired from a local record shop in the form of a bootleg, and just rare stuff A lot of the stuff was released when it was still considered a rarity though (e.g. a good amount of The Replacements' stuff in there has since been released on special editions/remasters etc.)-- so it is outdated and hasn't been updated in ages. It just locked me out randomly one day. Still never figured out why and not one retrieval method worked.
      Here it is, though: www.youtube.com/@godFlintstone
It is extremely varied. In one corner, you have Kathleen Hanna doing some slam poetry with a weird trance beat, and in the other is GG Allin covering the Rolling Stones.... so there's something for everybody (probably).

@@computersnevergoonstrike If you aint got no better option I would recommend you taking a stab at Slayers official live album Decade of Aggression. It's probably one of the best most powerful/energetic live albums out there... but it's flawed by the muddy sound (which the band decided to not touch at all prior to release). Would be fun to see what your OCD could do with that one!

    • @computersnevergoonstrike
      @computersnevergoonstrike  20 дней назад

@@originalvisual7491 I'm down! My history with Slayer, admittedly, is a little bit on the lower side. I like their music but have never delved into it fully.... I recall making a meme before the term existed when Steve Irwin died, and it was an animation of his face on a fish or something running from a stingray behind him (or a jelly fish?)... but until that part in the video, it's just a bunch of phoitos of him, him with crocodiles, more crocodiles, etc.... and then out of nowhere ON AND ON SOUTH OF HEAVEN!!! cuts into I'll Be Misisng You and the animation plays for a bit. That video had os much hate and eventually someone got it removed somehow. One of those lost treasures I need to find on my old hard drives.
ANYWAY... I think my closest connect with Slayer would probably have to be seeing Fantomas live. Dave is an incredible drummer... just insane. I may end up seeing Slayer at RF this year as well.... it depends on what days we go, if we go, etc. etc. but being in IL/Chicago ,I tend to go at least one day most years. Bad lineup but a few goodies crammed in... it's fun and kinf of like a fancy carnival if nothing else... but if we're there the night Slayer plays, I know it would be more entertaining than the Cure were last year.... ugh.
So just because I'm not totally familiar with Slayer and this live album (getting it now..), what type of sound would should I be looking to touch up or rectify so to speak? I mean, other than hearing it myself and just going off of what I think sounds better, is there anything inparticular that is just horrible i.e. the drums, cymbals, lead guitar, low vox, etc..... I can crank through stuff quicker when I have a set goal in mind.
Evbentually I'm going to bring one of my record players upstairs and connect it to my computer to rip some vinyl that is pretty random.
Also, one other album I am thinking about looking into, but I'm unsure which copy to use as the "mold"...... LAMF by Johnny Thunders and the Heartbreakers. So many mixes, so many bad mixes, so so so many... then RSD mix that promised the true masters, which did sound good, but still underwhelming. The cassette mix has always seemed to be the best but other than a low-quality youtube version good luck finding one in real life.... But I would love to workon that album a bit. The drums are terrible.... and when Johgnny remixed it for his, he made them sound like a drum machine almost... ithe '77 mixe or w/e it was called... ugh. So many bad mixes of such an iconic album. Wish I could find the tape. I've shilled out lots of money on tapes I've found from sellers in Italy and random places just to save media from disappearing.... and LAMF is one of those tapes I'd sellout for I think.
Anyway, just give me a small guidance for the Slayer album, just some suggestions before I get going that is. I have to listen to it still and I'll give it a shot then. Might be kind of fun/interesting to work on something that I've never heard, and am not too familiar with.... No bias at all

Oh, speaking of RF< while it's gotten weird and evolved/devolved, had the freak show, got rid of it, brought it back now.... moved so many times.... It will never be as bad as the inaugural one in 2005 (I think?) with Shane West fronting the Germs, one member of the Misfits and maybe one of their 500 drummers and fill-ins playing mostly old '50s covers, and then the "The" Dead Kennedys with god-knows-who as the frontman.... It was pretty bad. I am shocked it has almost made it 20 years now. My friend and I got in for free because our friend's band won a talent show they had where the winner would get to open or have a small slot during the thing. Kind of a cool idea in hindsight.... but it's become so corporate and expensive now. Funny enough come closing time each night as people are being scattered out, food venders suddenly start dropping their prices and yelling about the tacos or tamales they're selling as if they're at an auction or something. Those $9 tacos became $4 pretty fast. heh. Hopefully it's fun if I end up going this year. Last year surprised me and was neat.

@@computersnevergoonstrike Haha rest that mans soul! Can you believe it's almost 20 years ago he died? Anyhow, back to the topic: Given that you love Daves drumming and are familiar with his capabilities from Fantomas, that is exactly a thing you should try to clean up on that record. He's buried in mud. Listen to the double bass outro/tom fills on Angel of Death for example... Anyhow that and perhaps the vocals are what could use the most cleaning from the get go. You could perhaps do this one and vary it with the Johnny Thunders record as to avoid ear fatigue? Just a suggestion. Look forward to hear what you're going toing put out dude!

It kills me to see how many great people it has destroyed. It almost destroyed me. I would never wish that lifestyle and affliction on anybody... even my worst of enemies. Horrible way to live. Out of curiosity, how was Layne looking at that point? I've always wanted to see a photo of him in the pink ski mask covering his face from a performance he did with Tool in '94 on Opiate.... I've heard it, and I've heard the other versions of Opiate with Layne including the one with a video as well (I plan to clean that track up a bit, too).... But I can't track down any video or photo of that pink ski mask he supposedly covered his face in.
When you went to this show was there any indication Maynard was going to come out?
And thank you! I didn't even put a ton of time into cleaning this and fixing the channels, but I bet if I had , it might'ce been even cleaner. One thing about mastering or cleaning up old live takes is you don't want to overdo certain things or it can bury parts of the mix, and that's no good. I am just so happy I can actually heard Maynard in this now, as opposed to the original one floating/uploading on here.

thanks man!! To my knowledge, and this is just going off of what I know of that is circulating.... Layne and Maynard sang Opiate on three or four occasion including the show in Hawaii, which is unreal. I love that. One of those three(four?) times Layne had a pink skimask over his face when he came out, evidently or supposedly to cover up how sickly he had been looking... I've read commentary from people who were there and both ends of the spectrum but would love to see a photo from that show or some sort of video one day I also have always wondered since it's a long version.... about 9 mins I think.... does Layne stay on stage the entire time?.... So many things I wonder about that one time and yet there's so much contradicting info out there.
The one thing that drives me nuts about the various opiate collaborations is their parts and the harmonies never seem to really match up, or they're randomly timed.... In this version of Rooster, at least after I took the original file I had and cleaned it up a bit, you can hear Maynard singing clearly and it sounds almost rehearsed.... I love the cuts of Opiate w/ Layne, but they're all pretty messy and on-the-spot it feels like.
I really want to find somebody who may have a photo of Layne in the pink skimask though.... and just curious from anybody who was there: how long did Layne stay on stage for? The live version of Opiate for that one w/ layne kind of goes into a jam and self-destructs itself eventually. It is something like 8-9 mins long...
Also re: the photo in this shot, I am not positive, but pretty sure it's actually from Lolla '93. That's Kat from Babes in Toyland.... I don't believe she was in Hawaii for that show. I'm familiar with the bill and know BIT dind't play. I don't think Primus did, either. Not 100% but pretty certai nthat photo is from lollapalooza- not to nitpick, just to make sure everyone knows :)
      cheers!

The performances after that period are bittersweet to me, since the only way to hear some of their awesome songs from the Tripod album was to hear them in....well, '96 I think. And Layne had declined a lot even by that point.... Once so active on stage, engaging with the audience, energetic, etc... and then those last few shows opening for Kiss where he is holding onto his microphone stand like he's about to get blown over by the wind if he lets go. It's rough, because for as bad of shape he must have been in, his voice was still better than most others on good nights, and a lot of that Kiss tour seemed like "bad" nights. Still an unmistakable and unbelievable voice despite his frail and sick body. There's a show from July 2nd that was videotaped and it's somewhere on here, maybe July 1st... I know the 3rd was the last show and one which he had a bad OD afterwards, essentially ending their part of the tour right there. But on the 2nd he actually leaves his microphone stand for the only time out of any clips I've seen that exist from that Kiss tour.... during We Die Young.... he takes the mic in his hands, gets down near the crowd and crouches like he used to.... and then walks around some more and finally returns to the mic stand. It is the only time I saw him move from that stand in any clips from that era of AIC.... It's like for a split second he came to life. Maynard is a legend, but a BETTER singer than Staley? that's a pretty wild statement... I'm happy to let them both just be legends, to each there own though homie, hope everyone is well

@@adultonsetwoodworking def better and its not even close, maynard could consistantly sing throughout shows and not get tired (while sinigng similar if not higher more sustained notes) Layne was known to get very tired and a lot of the time couldnt sing like halfway through the set

I don't hear MJK's voice at all, I think you just posted the photo and a crappy bootleg

Nope... I can hear it just fine. He's harmonizing. A lot more near the middle and end of the song too. If you hear the version that had been going around before this one, you'll hear everything panned only to the right channel, and then it IS hard to hear Maynard if not impossible at times. Maybe it's your sound setup and if it's in mono that might be an issue. I don't know dude, but I can hear him 10x better than the right channel mix that's uploaded and may have been on p2p 'I took a bad mix which was all in one channel and I did a 20-minute cleanup on it... I could have done much better, but as it is, people seem to be fine with this and at the moment I'm focusing on fixing up a lot of stuff from my old channel that I lose the pw/ got locked out of. If you'd like me to try to do anything else with this mix (or to enhance the old one) let me know, and I'd be glad to fuck around on it for fun (and more than 20 spare mins) to see if I can get it to sound even better, which is probably not too hard given I admittedly have said this was a very quick cleanup to deal mostly with the right channel, but also clarify MJK's background vox. so both weren't jammed into one channel.... In any case, there's no need to be accusatory and rude. I would love to give this a much more thorough cleanup but it truly was a pile of shit mix I started with. So maybe it's the fact that yea, the original bootleg was shitty as hell, and I just did what I could in a small amount of time. People seem happy tho, so no need to piss on the dandelions... as I said, I'd be happy to try to do a more thorough cleanup on this one day when I have time to sit down for 2hrs or so.

Hah, really? I've never heard about that, but I know he had his breaks with Demri.... That's interesting. I loved Kat.... Shit, the Pagan Babies or whatever the band she was ni w/ Courtney Love in the '80s, wrote like, 4 songs.... one of the songs wound up in a Babes in Toyland albunm and one song wound up a Hole song eventually if not mistaking, but she was great back then, even. Love BIT... when I bought CDs and there were placves like used cd stores with just bins of $2 cds, I lkoaded up on pretty much all of my ;90s cds like BIT, Meat puppets, solo Jerry albums Dinosaur Jr., Replacements, and so on and ob, BIT and L7... I remember getting their albums dirt-cheapp at this same place in my mind; loved it.... I still buy CDs but not nearly as often. Shit, i don't even really buy vinyl too much. I just won't let myself sell my vinyl collection again.... so much good stuff went out before inflation. oh well.
