However, the layout can vary. Due to social distancing regulations, these weekly Tuesday night teachings are happening via Zoom from Bodhinyana Monastery.

Great question on the Stoics. I'm a philosophy nut & figure Aristotle, then the Greek stoics, then Jesus & Paul & Marcus Aurelius & Epictetus, were influenced by the ancient Buddha's teachings. The whole axial age was interconnective. Teachings from Persia, India, etc, moved along the Silk Road. Not just perfume & tea.

Well said. I completely agree. This is all connected and I realize this more and more as I learn about Buddhism.

Um, neither the existence of either Jesus or the Buddha have ever been conclusive. There are speculations based on a few eyewitness accounts that, regrettably, didn't all give very many useful biographical details on the people themselves. There's been no physical evidence found at all that's anywhere close to meeting criteria for a conclusive biography. The Pali Canon itself wasn't begun at the time it the Buddha but well after so who knows what was lost in recall or the retelling that, if known, would've resulted in as very different Buddhism or Christianity.
As for Aristotle, he was a bit of an idiot, sorry. Socrates and Plato were much further along in their Life contemplations. As to who influences who, I would say just look deeper than culture and tradition and names. They're more pointers, like the address on a mailbox represents a house. Anyway, I will give you a very simple, but very useful tool for understanding other people and the countries they are in
*Philosophy informs Ethics and Ethics informs Law.*
This is true wherever you go in the world. Never forget this equation does NOT require you to feel good about the results in order to prove it's accuracy. 😜 From it, you can quickly come to grasp both The collective gestalt and often the individuals within it. Just don't try to apply it so rigidly that you CAN'T see the individual or what's unique about them.

@@PhoenixProdLLC ask yourself why you felt the need to essentially say, “well actually...” when people are connecting dots that they have never explored before.
Meditate on that desire and get back to us.

    • @lizafield9002

@@PhoenixProdLLC Um, i feel kinda sorry for you. Perhaps you are correct & no Jesus or Buddha existed. How does that matter in a person's life today, which calls for connection, love, joy & humility?
There's no joy or life in what you wrote from the upstairs dehydrated default mode vault of your brain, disjoined entirely from any irrigation by the lowly, connective heart. No love. No humble interest, kindness, freedom, happiness or beginner's mind, no Socrates awareness of not knowing much, nor friendliness toward the vast Unknown.
You can speak with tongues of men & angels, but if you have no love, you sound like a metallic hollow joyless gong. You must be super young, or quite cut off from people's suffering or goodness, plus nature, soil, rivers and sky, plus the majestic stars of night, & perhaps your own emotions. Maybe get out & pump some real life back thru your veins. Then you won't want to win factoid arguments but rather to relate.

Wishing you a very Happy Birthday Ajahn Brahm……sorry I was a bit shocked and taken a back to hear about your number 2!! I totally understand there is beauty in everything but honestly didn’t need to hear this part of your talk. It offended me really in that it is a very private and intimate aspect of one’s daily existence that should be kept private. Made me feel unease. Thank you however for sharing all your wisdom.🙏🏼

I think that's probably a cultural attitude. Like thinking it's nasty for a woman to have hairy armpits. I used to be really uptight about all bodily functions, but my teenage nephew has no shame, and now nothing phases me. It's liberating to not take the body personally. It does what it does and it has absolutely nothing to do with me. Do I even eat? The hands and the jaws and the teeth and the tongue and the saliva seem to do all the work. I couldn't produce stomach acid or digest food if I tried. And knowing what is and isn't waste material is beyond me. I can't even plan when to unload it. That I spent so much of my life feeling ashamed of this body breaks my heart. It truly is a wondrous, if not miraculous machine.
Thank you for inspiring this train of thought. 🙃

He does NOT look 70! Good. That means the community is treating him well. That's good, because he's done the same by them, and then some. OK, enjoy yourselves. It's better than not enjoying yourselves.
