  • Tomato Hornworm Control - Organic Treatment
In this episode, I will show you how I solve the hornworm problem in my vegetable garden with homemade organic spray.
A few days ago, I noticed that the bottom leaves on my tomato plants are chewed up by something. It took me a while, but I was able to find the tomato hornworms doing quite a bit of damage to my plants. These green caterpillars are very hard to detect because they are the same green color as the tomato leaves.
You can handpick them and move them to another area, but because I do not have another leafy area to relocate them, I had to destroy them.

AMAZON LINKS TO THE PRODUCTS I'M USING IN THIS VIDEO:
    Vitamix: amzn.to/2fdDTlj
    Cayenne Pepper: amzn.to/2fhb0bm
Here is how I make my organic spray for 1 gallon of water:
    1 teaspoon of Cayenne pepper
    1 teaspoon of garlic
    1teaspoon of dish-wash soap
I put all the ingredients in a blender with 1/4 of a cup of water, mix it well, strain it, and let it sit for 1 hour. Next, I pour the mix in the water, mix it well again an pour it in the spray bottle.
In the evening, I spray the underside of 1 of my tomato plants and wait for 24 hours to make sure the plant is reacting well to the mixture.
The next evening I spray the rest of my tomato plants. You can use it to control the hornworms on your pepper plants as well. I sprayed again a few days later just in case there were any hornworm eggs on the leaves. This is a natural repellent that will not harm your plants when applied properly.
You can also use flashlight at night and find the caterpillars by flashing the light underneath the leaves of the affected plants.
The best prevention is to check your plants every day for damaged leaves so you can control the tomato hornworms at earliest stages.
In Arizona, the green tomato hornworms usually emerge in late spring and early summer.

Another tip to find them....go out at night and use a black light to shine on the plants. The light will make the worms light up bright green.

      i killed two today.
best way i found to control them is to check my tomatoes daily and look carefully because they are hard to spot. destroy any you find. they are camouflaged really well so i look for tell tell signs like missing leaves or poop droppings.
i found and killed about 10 last week and sprayed neem oil on my plants after that. seeing them back today says maybe neem oil is not the best at controlling them. a few years ago i used sevin dust but have since gotten away from chemicals. they will not go near a plant that has been dusted but started eating my pepper plants so i had to dust them too. also putting sevin dust on a horn worm is somewhat like putting salt on a slug. pretty much kills them within a short time. they will just fall to the ground and die.

Liked and subscribed! Thanks for the tips! We just found THWs on one of our tomato plants. It happens to be the one our dog kept digging up and was unhealthier than all of the other tomato plants we grow. My neighbors have a TON of them on their tomatoes.
My children took three of them into our house and have watched them go through their lifecycle. Pretty cool, actually. Our worms got HUGE eating pruned branches of our tomato plants. Once they got to the size of MY THUMB...they all buried themselves in the dirt we put in the jar. We're now awaiting 3 4-inch moths to appear. We shall see! :)
At least SOMETHING good might come from our uninvited guests! ;)

You can also boil the pepper and garlic into a tea for abut 10 min. and let it steep (it really cleans out your sinuses in the process!) When it cools you can strain it and put it in a sprayer.

I was taking cuttings from my lemon balm last week and saw that some leaves looked like they'd been chewed on, and low and behold, the next cutting I took had one of those little buggers on it! I will tell you this, they like tumeric leaves but not as much as peppers and tomatoes. They will even eat avocado baby tree leaves. Bought some Bacillus Thuricide hoping that solves the problem if it dosn't then i will have to start from scratch next month hoping if i give it time all the pest will die since they wont have anything to eat.

So far my tomato plants are okay but!!
I had picked peas one day. The next day I was walking through the yard from the garden and noticed what I thought was a pea pod I had dropped. A big fat pea pod at that, which I thought was strange because my peas weren't that big when I had picked them. Bent down and picked it up and it was a big fat horn worm!! In the grass mind you! Well because it wasn't inside my garden fence I did relocate it. I just thought it was weird that it was in the yard.
I am writing your mom's recipe down. Thank you for sharing it!!👍

Thank you for a wonderful video! If you haven't done so already, you might want to keep the hornworms alive (put them in a closed container that gets plenty of air, and feed them the waste cuttings from your tomato plants). Once you have several of them, give them to someone who raises chickens, turkeys, or other food birds: they are pure protein and the birds LOVE them.

I spent what felt like a weekend picking the cabbage loopers off my brassicas and dropping them in a pool of soap, water, and bleach. That gets them. And then I sprayed down there leaves of my plants down with a tablespoon of real cold presse neem oil, a tablespoon of true soap, and 32 ounces of water. Supposed to do that every two weeks but I am going try this too and good luck.

I came across this video looking on tips to breed hornworms actually! 😆 lol. But that being said, great video about helping with tomato plants and like a previous commenter said you can sell them or their eggs even to local reptile owners or shops or online. They sell for a good amount of money and usually no laws or regulations or license needed to sell bugs also. Also a tip about them, they only will eat certain plants like tomato and tobacco plants maybe one or two others but not a lot so moving them to another leaf will only help if it's a tobacco plant or they will still come sniff out the tomato plant lol. But if they eat tobacco leaves don't use them as feeders for lizards. They will tear a whole tomato plant up within a day or two only one of them so definitely don't want them in your tomato garden lol I bought mine a plant once and two ate a whole plant in one day.

why Potassium is important in plants:
    - Potassium regulates the opening and closing of stomata thus regulating the uptake of CO2 thus enhancing photosynthesis.
    - It triggers activation of important biochemical enzymes for the generation of Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP). ATP provides energy for other chemical and physiological processes such as excretion of waste materials in plants.
    - It plays a role in osmoregulation of water and other salts in plant tissues and cells.
    - Potassium also facilitates protein and starch synthesis in plants.
    - It activates enzymes responsible for specific functions.

Trying to keep my tomatoes cool in this heat! I'm using BT which is said to be organic and it does work. I'm new to gardening and did not realize what was going on until I did some research and found them eat away at my plants. How do you deal with high heat and tomatoes, not sure if mine will survive. Thank you!

    • @AnOldSchoolHome
      @AnOldSchoolHome  7 лет назад

Hi Maricela! Not to discourage you, but this year I stopped watering may garden when it was 120 degrees because I could not get cool enough water unless I was running it for 20 minutes and even then it was still pretty warm. It wasn't making financial sense to run that much water. Last year was much better and my tomatoes made it. I have a shade cloth over the raised bed and was watering them every day. They did stop blossoming in July but started again in September and I was picking tomatoes again in November. I hope your plants make it throughout the summer. This week I'm starting new seeds for my winter garden. I am working on a video right now that I'm gonna publish on Friday or Saturday and you will see how much better it is to garden in the winter here.
BT is good; a lot of gardeners use it. I hope you got rid of those nasty worms.
Thank you so much for watching and good luck with the garden!
      Best, Sasha

I will try this next time (I hope there isn't a next time :). By the way, I watched a gardener up in New Hampshire, I believe, who puts q-tips soaked in mint oil on all corners of his garden because, according to him, mint oil attracts bumblebees who are great tomato pollinators.
Also Lisa, I talked to my mom and here are the main reasons for the bitterness of your peppers:
      1. Not ripen enough (picked too young). And that applies for any chilly peppers as well. She said you should wait until they change to the color they are suppose to be.
      2. Bad soil / too many chemicals (but I'm sure yours is just fine).
      3. There are varieties that are bitter. She said that back home they have been importing peppers from Greece that are bitter even when fully ripe.
      I hope this helps!
      XOXO

Thanks for asking her Sasha. This was a purple bell. It was completely purple when I picked. The seeds were given to me. The plant actually seemed to struggle to get going. My green and reds were fine, just the purple. I'll see if leaving them on the vine longer will help. Give mom my many thanks.

I have a question: a half gallon has 64 fluid ounces. Your recipe yielded the half gallon recipe but if I'm not mistaken, you poured it into a 32 oz spray bottle which is 1/4 gallon. So did you use half of your formula fluid or all of it?

Please remember this your garden must give at least 5 to 10% of your yield must go back to nature. I know that I might sound crazy but the old men and women always stressed this point of balance. Whether you can believe this point as truth or not you must give a percentage of your yield back to nature.
