  • This all-natural, non-chemical insect spray has worked for me. And according to the comments, hundreds of others. It's easy to make and won't harm your plants. Just what I needed as an organic gardener.
    Want to see how this natural insecticide worked for others? Click this link for the FAQ to have most of your questions answered and to here how it's working in other gardens: anoregoncottage.com/diy-garlic...
    When my basil plants, trumpet vine, and green beans were being eaten alive by unseen bugs, she had to find an effective way to get rid of the pests.
    I couldn't use chemicals because some of these plants were herbs she used in cooking. But the organic remedies I tried simply didn't work.
    Combining several natural pest remedies I'd read about, I created a Garlic-Mint Garden Insect Spray. It has just four ingredients: garlic, mint leaves, cayenne pepper, and a small amount of biodegradable dishwashing liquid.
    Go to my blog for the actual recipe and cooking instructions:
    www.anoregoncottage.com/homema...
    I sprayed it all over the plants and the first thing she noticed was it smelled good. Within two weeks the plants had noticeably improved. After a month they were back to full health.
    The bugs, whatever they were, had been driven away by the spray. (I never found any dead bodies.)
    Watch the video and then make a batch of spray for your garden. Get more great organic gardening ideas at www.AnOregonCottage.com.

    Jamie -
    I made your recipe back in 2020. I doubled your recipe back then and stored it in a plastic jug as a spray bottle refill.
    I JUST ran out this morning, 05/23.
    So it stores well and didn't get rancid.
    I use it on everything.
    Snails, spider mites, aphids, red lily beetles that are coming in on any big box store - hosta, pansy, petunia, oriental lily plants, etc.
    I'm even hitting shade-loving ferns that attract tons of mosquitoes to deter them from the yard.
    I know you cut mint from your yard but it's $4 for a handful at local markets, so this new batch is going to have peppermint essential oil instead and maybe a drop or two of rosemary oil instead as the oil is what they are deterred from that sticks to the leaves and stems and drops onto the soil. That will also deter the bunny rabbits from my hostas without being harmful.
    I also want to say that food grade diatomaceous earth is also great for the fungal issues and is also safe for pets in the yard.
    A little Morganite fertilizer for the grass (pet safe too) and your backyards are poison-free and happy.
    Their's nothing worse than watching a neighbor carelessly spray Roundup and Weed and Feed on a windy day knowing that animals walk in bare feet every day year after year on poisons drifting every which way.
    Thank you again for sharing an easy, long-storing pet-safe spray that isn't hard on the wallet.
    🙏🌞

    Apparently, putting a bit of fruit juice in helps to attract sugar craving bugs like aphids and ensure that they eat it. Seeing that garlic and mint are not attacked much by pests, even though they have never been boiled, I suggest not boiling it, therefore killing bacteria and enzymes, but just grind it and steep it.

    I got so excited that I just used ordinary basil, black pepper, garlic and dish soap... After spraying my greenhouse, it made the whole garden smelled like an italian restaurant T_T

    Thank you! I already made the recipe. Hope this works on the basil. I have a question, how many times should I spray? If there are already parasites on the plant?

      Hope it works, too. I sprayed once, waited, and then sprayed again a few days later. I only needed a couple of times and then the plants were healthy enough to grow on their own.

    It looks like it works great on bugs. But what about critters like rabbits and raccoons? Seems easy and legit I’m going to make and try it out thank you for sharing

      Great idea - I've had lots of people who've used this say they've tried it with animals like deer and so it may work!

    Great video thank you! Hey if i make a bottle of this how long will it last? any ideas? leave it in fridge vs in closet shelf life thoughts?

    • @AnOregonCottage
      @AnOregonCottage  4 года назад +1

      I found that it lost its potency after about a month in the garden shed. It may last longer in a fridge - I haven't tested that.

    This is the answer to my chewing bugs that have gotten out of control. Effective immediately, thanks for the video. Also wondering if it affects the taste of produce that has been sprayed.

      @AnOregonCottage  Год назад

      Wow, I'm so glad it helped! It may if you harvested right away. If you want to harvest within a few days, I'd spray the plants down. Or just wash the produce well after bringing in.

    I was spraying my garden with insecticide - have to - too many earwigs, and I noticed a side effect. I checked what the ingredient was in the spray - Permethrin. I use mostly raised gardens, so I spray around the edges of the boxes. Snails do not like it and slugs curl up if they touch it. I know it's a chemical but my garden was being destroyed every year. The side effect was on snail and slug deterrence and that made me happy because they are the biggest eaters. Having seen this video, I'll try it and hope for the best. I'd rather steer away from chemicals if I can.

      This won't work on snails and slugs - they don't care about the smell, lol. It may work on earwigs, though!

      You may want to try corn meal in your soil, it works for grub worms, they eat it and die

      I sprayed and let it work for a week and then check to see if it needs another spray. The basil only needed 2 sprays total and the beans only one.

      @AnOregonCottage  4 года назад

      2-4 weeks, with less potency at the 4 week mark.

    This recipe looks great. I have been wanting to try a pest control solution for my basil. Caterpillars are eating it! My question is if I can substitute the fresh mint with peppermint essential oil. I could add it after boiling the cayenne and garlic. Would this work? If so, how many drops you think?

    • @AnOregonCottage
      @AnOregonCottage  9 лет назад

      Dallas Nachtigall I think that would probably work, adding it after boiling (though with he cayenne, since it's used dry - you can use fresh peppers and boil them but it's easier for me to use dried). I don't know how many drops - is there any way to find out what would equal the amount needed?

    Hi, very helpful. Does this Garlic-Mint concoction work for cabbage looper worms?

    • @AnOregonCottage
      @AnOregonCottage  4 года назад

      I haven't tested it, but I don't think it would deter the worms once they're on the plants. It may keep the butterflies that lay them from the plants? I'll have to test that out!
