That old man snitch is easily one my least favorite characters from this show lmao. But yeah imagine watching these episodes premiere live every week from your family living room when you're like 10 and your mom walks in and is just like "what the hell are you watching?"
It's honestly sad how realistic this episode is because this stuff that's happened to haru and his father actually happens useless through colonisation and most of the time they don't escape 😞
I mentioned this in a previous episode how Avatar takes from real life, Imperial Japan heavily shipped hundred of thousands of Asians for wartime labor. It was estimated about 800,000 were transported back to Japan. This episode was a partial reflection as one of the things Japan did under their rule, which would have been desperately needed for demands such as the explosion of Opium drug trade.
I have a theory that Katara is actually the main character of ATLA. Like you said, she’s their voice… she’s their moral compass, their heart, and also the first voice you hear when you enter the world of ATLA (the intro). She’s a huge part of helping steady their course to be the right path, though she’s a child too and slips up. But she takes the responsibility and carries that burden. So even though she’s describes a story of a boy taking on his destiny, the show actually is hugely about a girl surviving the genocide of her tribe and taking the power back to end the war for good.
@@DragonMoth34 me: “she’s the first voice you hear when you enter the world of atla, the intro” you: “she also narrates the intro” read before replying. maybe learn reading comprehension as well
Surprise surprise, the one nation who exclusively ate vegetarian has gone extinct. If the Nomads ate some bison steaks every now and then, maybe the fire nation would be no match for them.
Aang's people have survived (or had before they were massacred) in that world not eating meat for millennia. He manages. All Airbenders were vegetarian.
Wait then, (spoilers) why would Aang tell Yangchen he's a vegetarian? Wouldn't that be way too obvious to even mention? I figured it was optional like with Buddhist monks in real life.
Not all Airbenders are vegetarians. That's just an assumption most people make due to Aang being our one example for most of the series. Many are throughout the series, but it is a life choice made individual rather than something Airbenders are forced to do.
@@Timmir00 They're based off of Buddhist monks. Who are vegetarians. The Air Nomads believed all life was sacred, so being vegetarian was pretty much a necessity to be one. 'As you may recall, all Air Nomads, including Aang, were vegetarian because of their spiritual beliefs (as learned in ATLA s. 1, ep. 5).' Their entire cultures food is vegetarian when you read about their diet. 'Much of the culinary traditions of the Air Nomads were lost after their civilization was nearly wiped out at the beginning of the Hundred Year War. However, it is known that the most defining characteristic of their cuisine was strict vegetarianism'
@@jayleemittens9858 While many Buddhist monks are vegetarians, not all of them are. Tibetan Monks historically lived in an area where vegetation is scarce, so eating meat wasn't uncommon back then. Nowadays there has been a push to be vegetarian, but it's a personal choice based on ones ethics, means, and ability to do so. Now as for the Avatar Universe, you are correct in that a large amount of the cuisine they had were vegetarian in nature for the whole "all life is sacred" teachings that come from Air Nomad society. The point I was making however is that Air Nomads were strictly held to be vegetarian. Likely there were teachers, like there are in the real world, who push for their students to keep a vegetarian lifestyle. However being vegetarian is ultimately an individuals choice, not enforced by Air Nomad society (much like shaving ones head). A choice I'll admit is likely made by a large majority of Air Nomads as it's a natural conclusion from their teachings, but still a choice nonetheless. Unfortunately though, there's only so much room to speculate. We don't get to see Air Nomad culture much outside of what we see in the show, though I'll admit that I also have yet to read Yangchen's novel, which might have more information in this regard. Still the point I'm trying to make is that being a Monk or Nun and being a vegetarian isn't as strict as most people think it was. Thus why Aang made a point to state it to Yangchen like he did.
This may seem like a filler episode, but this is also important in a few ways: Katara being the voice of the group, what happens when a bender is separated from their element, and how far the Fire Nation's reach has spread out (save a few hold outs, which the series will show).
Sadly, the old man turning in Haru is not that far fetched at all. Back in Nazi Germany, people would turn in Jews, even when these Jews had helped and supported them before - maybe even saved their lives. A controlling, fear inducing government can drive communities apart pretty easily; disrupting friendships, neighbourhoods, and families in the process. Fear can drive people to do horrible things to those around them and the old man in this episode is the best example for that.
Exactly. It's 100% a fear thing. There are people in this world who have been alive since the war has begun, so they're the ones who have been suffering the longest and actually remember a time before all of this happened.
Not to mention the fact that the reason the old man was in the mines in the first place was likely because he was being forced to work there, and his reward for turning in Haru may have been freedom from the forced labor
So yeah. Now that you've made it through this episode, it's safe to say that the Earth Kingdom isn't doing too well either. It's a massive region, mostly rural areas that are being overrun and extorted by the Fire Nation. It's pretty much just a few massive walled cities that are currently holding out against the invasion, along with Kyoshi Island. The Firebenders have a much greater ability to work with metal as a byproduct of their abilities, giving them a substantial technological advantage over the other nations. It hasn't been enough to breach the walls of Omashu or the capital city yet, and Kyoshi Island's just been staying neutral, so the Fire Nation's mostly ignored them.
The fact that the Earth kingdom is so big is a large part of why the war has been taken so long. But, the Fire Nation has a technological superiority that is only getting better and making it so that they have a very real chance of fighting this ground war against people who are literally masters of the ground.

@@DisneyLover258 Yeah ngl Youswell's missing episode annoyed me too, having the Elric's reputations grow early in 03 was a fun one and would've hit harder when the truth of Liore came back. Oh and I don't hate '03, one of my major gripes about '09 is they have plenty of 'brotherly affection' moments but they refuse to use the Brothers theme during it, that fight on the roof could have been a perfect example of its use. A lot of people take exception to 03 because of the ending, I don't mind the ending - prefer 09 but 03 is serviceable. I've had it in my head for a while to re-purpose 03 and create a fan animation that reveals an endlessly looping series of failures by Ed that have him keep trying the wrong path, and to eventually pick the Brotherhood one, but by doing so, had the Dwarf awaken that will set the next world on its path and lead to the same white void again that Ed has to make a choice on. (there'd be the two gates to choose, the 03 reality and the one we see in Brotherhood that Ed would eventually choose by going through but then awakens the Dwarf and makes it aware of 'Truth') I'm trying to keep it entirely spoiler free just in case these guys see this and decide to do a reaction to Brotherhood.
Y’all need to look up a map to give some context. The Earth Nation is Massive, easily the biggest land mass. There’s two Kings, King Boomie and the Earth King. There’s a Lot of destruction, poverty and colonies because of the war with the Fire Nation but trade is still very active in the Earth Kingdom and the areas that haven’t seen the frontlines of the war are still very prosperous. Omashu looks so pretty and untouched because it is, so far. The Fire Nation just hasn’t beaten the Earth Kingdom’s forces enough to reach the entire continent.

It’s so funny that they mention Zuko gaining a crush, cause at least half of the crew making ATLA were huge zutara fans and wanted to see the. Together including Zuko’s VA

That it is in fact an American made cartoon produced by Nickelodeon Studios that took stylistic inspiration from japanese cartoons? AND that there is in fact, no darker Japanese dub? If not, someone should get on that....
All the Zutara hate in the comments makes me tired. It's been almost 2 decades and you guys still can't let people ship who they want without being dicks...?

I feel as though One Piece could benefit for more moments like that, not to say they never have/had any, but generally the moments like that are far and few between, especially in a series with a length like One Piece. tldr: i dont think you know anything about One Piece, it's a superior series to Avatar in about every regard, though Avatar isn't bad, or even mediocre by any stretch, they're both phenomenal.
(there'd be the two gates to choose, the 03 reality and the one we see in Brotherhood that Ed would eventually choose by going through but then awakens the Dwarf and makes it aware of 'Truth')
I'm trying to keep it entirely spoiler free just in case these guys see this and decide to do a reaction to Brotherhood.
0:50 my god you don't know how right you are, except it's Pai Sho, not Go.
12:25
No fight started, that is the general consensus I've noticed.
“I’ve got the black lung pop” 😂😂
Fun Fact: VA for Haru's Father is the Same VA for Kratos from God of War.
Remember that.
Love hearing Lt. Sulu in this! He plays it so over the top but it works.
I know...there are no filler episodes in Avatar. But...to me this is kind of filler. But I still like it.
them: he needs to learnd for someone.
me: ooh I can wait for they reactions to those arcs
16:21 In the show, they were refering to the American Buffalo (Bison), and not the Cape or Water Buffalo (true Buffaloes).
George Takei Warden EXCIST
King Kai: No, No, No
Why did I just get the upload notification? 9 months later? 😂😂😂😂
21:06 HACK YES ZUTARA
Warden: Fights with his man, bravely leading the troops in the moment of crisis, didn't even think of running away
The Dad: Oh, sO yOU aRe the COWARD
It only takes one person for a rebelion to start
7:37 Fire Lord who? I only know Snitch old man as the main villain of Avatar, throw him to the Unagi >:(
Whoa those subtitles are HUGE
4:56 Appa: You can try
9:33 That lemur is earthbending
11:14 No, never tell *George Takei* to shut up. We all need to hear as much of his voice as possible.
9:30 Momo the earth bender! 1:16
It’s so funny that they mention Zuko gaining a crush, cause at least half of the crew making ATLA were huge zutara fans and wanted to see the. Together including Zuko’s VA
Yeah also there was a lot of subtext for zutara in the show.
Is someone gonna tell them that this is not an anime written and produced overseas? That it wasn't a manga adapted into an anime and dubbed in English? That it is in fact an American made cartoon produced by Nickelodeon Studios that took stylistic inspiration from japanese cartoons? AND that there is in fact, no darker Japanese dub? If not, someone should get on that....
Lovely reactions ❤❤
Every time I rewatch the show I forget that this is all in one episode. I always think it’s a two parter.
8:45 Our world savior is a menace reason number 147.
the warden of the oil rig Im pretty sure is voiced by the main bearded spirit from mulan.
21:04 Do you have any idea what you've done?!

See pinned comment
All the Zutara hate in the comments makes me tired. It's been almost 2 decades and you guys still can't let people ship who they want without being dicks...?
Is it just me or is ruffs mic really quiet compared to booms and seeohknees?
The earth kingdom is much bigger than y’all think
21:04 😳
Warden over here in The emperor's New groove
20:56 No good deed goes unpunished.
4:51 Mission failed. We'll get em next time.
Please post this more often once a week is killing me
Huh, a very interesting Episode, that really puts certain things into perspective.
I have kind of forgotten about what the Next Episode is going to be about, maybe it’s the one where Zuko tries to use the necklace as a way to get Aang, it would be, but i don’t remember.
Anyway, things are going to keep getting interesting from here on, I will look forward to see what you think.
I can't wait to see these guys react to book 2 in particular, my favorite book with my favorite episodes and characters
7:36 All the homies hate that old man.
As someone who's favorite thing in the world is One Piece I'm not upset in the slightest. ATLA is amazing, the biggest difference is just the length/pacing/scale.
The characters, story, animation, and world building are still 10/10
Oh and the voice acting is also 10/10 but sometimes breaks the scale altogether. I'm talking "I want to live! Take me to sea with you!" levels of emotion.
Man this show is where you have to thank the entire team FROM THE ANIMATION TEAM THE VOICE CAST THE CREATORS THE FREAKING CHOREOGRAPHY TEAM ETC THEY MADE THIS SHOW JUST MWAH also YOU MEAN BETTER ONCE PIECE (cause there isn't like 20 million seasons and episodes) lol
I fuckin wish One Piece was that long, need more of it
@@Orion_44 heheh I mean we're getting a new series but let me rephrase then You mean better one piece (cause they actually finish a arc instead of making a single arc like 20 million episodes for that one arc and it's like just figuring out what evil Villain is doing ) lol 😅😅
@@eagleangel5568 That description of One Piece sounds like what someone who has never read or watched the series would describe it as.
I love both series to an absurd degree, and while Avatar is fantastic at world building and character development, One Piece is a superior work.
The one thing I'd give to Avatar/Korra over One Piece is the slice of life aspect, watching the Gaang just chilling and interacting with each other and having compelling moments of characterization made for some of the high points of this franchise.
And citing the length as a negative against One Piece just shows your lack of any valid criticism lol
@@scrunglee I'm just joking lol but I am right about how Long one piece last SOMEONE PLEASE MAKE A BOOK OF ALL OF ONE PIECE FROM THE SHOW THAT BE A THICC BOOK 😂😂😆
@@eagleangel5568 there are multiple series that are relatively substantially bigger than One Piece lmao.
Considering the average chapter size, it's not even that much reading material to get through for One Piece.
I can’t wait until they meet Toph
EARTH WATER FIRE AIR
Being Skeptical of bumi for reasons Entirely of your own machinations... Is understandable but unfortunate. Great reaction series so far on my way through to catch up to date.
Cant wait for them to see the storm or the blind bandit.
Oh this show definitely the American One Piece. That’s kinda what I say to people I try to get into OP “Have you watched ATLA? Well it’s like that but more.”
The more being filler, length, and movies. (Aswell as iconic transformations)
0:46 I'm saving this moment.
I wish after this they read the Avatar Comics it's show what happened to this show after.
can't wait for the next one
It's important to keep in mind that the war has been going on for 100 years. These people are in the same conflict that their grandparents fought in. And it's the Earth Kingdom that has been taking the brunt of the damage from the Fire Nation. Very few things can wear down your spirit like being in war and being in prison. These people are exhausted, and they just want this whole thing to be over.
Leaves from the vine....
Can't wait for my favorite short earthbender
0:03 😏
I mean the only reason Avatar isn't technically an anime is cause it didn't originate from Japan. Other than that it would have been. Its not like a majority of cartoons. Regardless, one of the greatest stories ever animated.
Remember guys Avatar the Last Airbender is not a kids show. At least that's what The Normies say.
This final scene....Wow
oh please don't pronounce is "Earoh". That's The Last Airbender movie's crap 😂😂
anyway, damn. Zutara starts early..
Yes it just iroh
I actually do ship zuko and katara XD
Okay genuinely curious why? Not trying to be mean but those 2 don't have all that many good interactions
You are correct, Zuko falls in love with Katara. He later sniffs the necklace while spanking one out.
Oh here we go at The Shipping Wars commence...
18:40 slight spoiler: this technique will be demonstrated in the series finale
It's pronounced "eye-roh" not "ear-roh."
