I'm impressed that Bumi is introduced as a very powerful earth bender really early in the story and still seems very powerful when looking back. After seeing the whole series (and the power scaling that's happened) it would be natural that this show of force would seem pretty tame in comparison, but I think it holds up well.
I think him and that "other earth bender" fight for the Title of Most Powerful Earthbender on Aang's world :) And they are both VERY neat. I kind of hope they team up at some point (even just for a demo or an exhibition bout) before Bumi presumably dies and Korra starts.
I think Bumi has it right when he claims that he is the most powerful....if we consider raw strength... creativity and finesse may not be his best assets, compared to the other one.
Bumi might be testing to see the elemental progress of the Avatar: 1. First element to use to catch a chicken drumstick. 2. Waterbending the waterfalls. 3. Standing his ground against a crazy beast. 4. Agni Kai style duel and fighting with much fire in his heart.
What I love about the tests is that Aang, Katara, and Sokka, are in no real danger. Bumi is there to teach Aang, and he knows that for Aang to truly grow the danger has to FEEL real, but it doesn’t have to be real.
The first season is a bit all over the place. It makes sense story wise because they are traveling to the north pole, across the entire world, and Aang wants to have fun on the way. The writing reason for doing this is because they want to introduce the viewers to the world and let the viewers get a feel for it before they buckle down and started chipping away at the main story. The other seasons are much more direct and they focus on their goal much more in each episode. This is just an introduction to the world of benders.
So, the main reason aang is not learning any earth bending yet is because he hasn't learned any water bending at all. The little title sequence that is at the start of the episode saying "Water, Earth, Fire, Air" is the avatar cycle. The avatar cycle not only indicates the nation the next avatar is going to be born into (e.g if the last avatar was a fire bender, the next is always gonna be an air bender) but also establishes the order in which the avatar is meant to learn the bending. The main reason for this is that all four bending types are based on real life martial arts that come with their respective philosophies and Aang is gonna need to learn each philosophy before learning their bending, the farther to the right the bending type is in the avatar cycle the more it opposes the avatars 1st bending philosophy and the harder it is for them to learn it in the first place. TL;DR Before moving on to earth or fire Aang needs to master water because he is gonna need to learn bits and pieces from each elements philosophies that will help him control all of them better.
Initially, Bumi was supposed to have the body of a frail old man, the idea being that you don't have to have muscles to be a great earthbender, but it was decided that he looks cooler with abs. Aaaaaaand now I'm going to forever headcanon this is why we got Luisa with muscles in Encanto.
Terminal velocity is a physics term describing the point at which a falling object reaches its maximum speed. But, with airbending, Aang can go beyond terminal velocity.
The one room is lit by emerald stones. The stones are a common light source used in the Earth Kingdom. They make everything appear greener than normal.
You lovely ladies mentioned before about what kind of benders you would be. I like to think of it like… Water: Cancer Pisces Scorpio Earth: Taurus - Virgo - Capricorn Fire: Aries - Leo - Sagittarius Air: Gemini - Libra - Aquarius
The other two fighters are loosely based on the two show creators. Some even say the characters Zuko and Aang are loosely based on the two show creators. If you saw a picture of them, you'd probably be able to guess which character goes with which creator.
they don’t know what filler is then; this episode introduces bumi. it’d be different if he never appeared again but he does and is important. episode 5 definitely isn’t filler!
Hahaha, it seems weird but as a Malaysian, his name Bumi is freaking obvious, it literally means Earth in the Malay language, same as in Indonesian. Lol 😅
It would be nice to learn the elements in any particular order, but that's not what's best for the Avatar. If you start out as an airbender, the next in line is water, an easy enough element for someone with an airbending background. Next is earthbending to get some stability with that fluidity. Last is firebending because it's so volatile. One drop of water on a piece of paper just makes it a little soggy. A rock can act as a paperweight. Fire though? One small ember could start a blaze from that one piece of paper if flammable things are nearby. You need the steady, stable mind that comes with earthbending, the soothing thoughts of a waterbender and the flexibility of an airbender (who knows more than how to toss fireballs everywhere) to control fire properly. I could go into detail about the other Avatars from other nations and how learning elements from their point of view would work but I'd be here all night xD
We gotta gotta gotta gotta start doing two at a time! One is just wayyyyyy too short. I can’t imagine watching this show one little episode at a time lmao.
Come on we all know the cabbage guy doesn't need to be selling cabbages. He's got his stand completely destroyed and replaced 3 times in like 2 days. The guy is rich, he could be doing whatever he wanted.
Katarra against extreme sports part1, only, since Aang's accidentally destroys the city,That might mean she's possibly right,I would still try it though.
I really hate what the Netflix live action show did to Bumi. They made him way too mean-spirited & cruel & bitter towards Aang. All the fun & charm this Bumi had, plus his impressive muscles, were gone!

🤯 I've loved this show since its debut but I've never heard that damn
Damn that’s good! I didn’t think of that!
Bruh... 😶
I was guessing he was trying to gauge Aang’s development but never thought of it that way - damn that’s deep - thanks for pointing it out!
You know you're a true Avatar fan if you can pronounce "Pippinpaddleopsicopolis" without spraining your tongue. 🤪

I mean, Aang nearly got impaled in the key challenge.
Just because the danger isn't real doesn't mean the danger can't be delicious!
The cabbage merchant was supposed to be a one-time character, but ended up appearing in several episodes throughout the series.
I always took him to be the central protagonist.
and becoming Cabbage Corp in Korra lmao

“My cabbages!”
Bumi is just a menace and i love it lol
What Bumi is saying is you have to think outside the box. Thinking outside the box is the theme for this episode.
Earthbending is based on a style of kung fu called Hung Gar. Hung Gar Kung Fu uses strong stances, rooting the fighter to the ground.
I knew that Arianna would know who Bumi was immediately lol
They'll talk about it later, but Aang has to learn the elements in order (as listed in the theme).
"Well first of all, it's pretty fun messing with people." 😆😆😆
14:40 its bhoomi hindi for earth/dirt/land
Cabbage Man is the real main character of the series
Can we talk about how good king bumi looks for a man 110+ years old
Terminal velocity is a physics term describing the point at which a falling object reaches its maximum speed. But, with airbending, Aang can go beyond terminal velocity.

This episode was written by John o' Bryan. Other episodes written by John o' Bryan include "The Siege of the North, Part 1" and "The Great Divide".

So happy to see ya'll! AND you brought Bumi! What a great afternoon. Thanks!
1:50 That's something you'll be seeing a lot of in the show.
Momos closeup was animated as if shot through a fish-eye lens.
A circle with a square in the middle is a common Earth Nation design. In fact, even the Earth Kingdom money uses it.
Ahhh, you were talking and missed the guy guarding the entrance seeing Momo's ears just as the gates were shutting.
Yeah, the music in this show is amazing!
Ah yes, the introduction of the industrial tycoon that is cabbage man
Jennamite was named after Nickelodeon executive Jenna Luttell.

You recognized him IMMEDIATELY!
Many Avatar fans consider this a "filler episode", that is, it doesn't advance the over arcing story line of the series. They're as crazy as the king.
This is one of my favorite episodes of season 1. I love Bumi
they don’t know what filler is then; this episode introduces bumi. it’d be different if he never appeared again but he does and is important. episode 5 definitely isn’t filler!
Bumi is such a fun character, I wish we had more of him lol
This city Omashu is the second largest in the Earth Kingdom. Ba Sing Se is the first largest.
Omashu's main industry is making weapons for the war.
"Rocky, because of all the rocks" not too far, because Bhumi is hindi/sanskrit for "Earth"/"Ground"
Hahaha, it seems weird but as a Malaysian, his name Bumi is freaking obvious, it literally means Earth in the Malay language, same as in Indonesian. Lol 😅
Just blinking at the patrons. We definitely got a Boomy in there.
Also Bumi, is that good kind of crazy who will just skirt or tiptoe on the line.

Funny thing is "Bumi" means rock in a different language, so Sokka was technically right.

Omashu has an unusually high standard for their imported produce.
It's actually not unusual for the earth kingdom
Why did I feel that comment about TV in 97 so hard? I mean... The shit we thought of as entertainment in some cases...

Remember the cabbage guy. He appears all over the place.
He has to learn the elements in the order of the Avatar cycle . Season 1 Earth book 2 Earth book 3 Fire

The animation style for Avatar was heavily inspired by Japanese anime. The best anime balance great action with humor and emotion.
The Avatar has to learn the elements in the order of the cycle so Aang needs to learn water before earth.

I'd say until the last 6-12 years, yes!
The problem is he has to learn water first so they have to learn water first they would be better off to Circle back to Earth

Bumi; King of Grandad Jokes and The Second Most powerful Earthbender Ever ( Of course being Second only to Toph Is still Very Formidable!)
Traditionally the avatar has to master the elements in the order of the avatar cycle. SO Aang needs to learn Water, then Earth, then Fire.
